[...] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.\" - Luke 12:32-34\nLenten Ember Day\n2026-02-25 - Lent - Non-privileged Feria - violet\nPLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY\nMystical Body of Christ: the Church understood as a living body whose head is Christ and whose baptized members are united to Him and to one another by grace.\nEcclesiastical or ecclesial: belonging or relating to the Church; the words refer to her life, law, worship, ministers, or common mission.\nClergy or cleric: the Church's ordained ministers; a cleric is a deacon, priest, or bishop.\nTODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR\nHumiliation, opposition, and penance do not mean that God has ceased to govern. Our Lord redeemed the world through His obedient suffering on the Cross. When Catholics accept unavoidable trials without sin, perform penance, and continue obeying the truth, those sufferings can humble pride and deepen fidelity rather than lead to despair. Ask for humility against the scarcely perceptible self-reliance by which souls stronger and more experienced have lost great treasures. Renounce confidence in personal strength and entrust every grace, virtue, resolution, and vulnerability to God through the faithful Virgin.\n\n\"They trusted in themselves, leaned upon themselves. They thought their house secure enough, and their coffers strong enough, to keep the precious treasure of their grace.\"\nSt. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 88\n\nSpiritual falls often begin before the visible sin, in a quiet transfer of confidence from God to self. Experience, knowledge, past victories, office, habits of prayer, or reputation for holiness can become counterfeit security. The enemy watches for the moment when vigilance relaxes and humility disappears.\n\nNever assume that yesterday's grace guarantees today's fidelity. Pray before danger, flee occasions, accept warnings, distrust private strength, and remain close to Our Lady. Confidence in her is not a charm; it is humble dependence that keeps the soul beneath grace and obedient to all the means God provides.\n\nPRACTICE\nName the graces God has preserved for you in exile and thank Him for them plainly.\n\nQUOTE OF THE DAY\n\"The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom, and his tongue shall speak judgment.\"\nHoly Scripture, Psalm 36:30, Original Douay-Rheims\n\nROMAN MARTYROLOGY - February 25\nIn Egypt, in the time of the emperor Maximian, the birthday of the holy martyrs Victorinus, Victor, Nicephorus, Claudian, Dioscorus, Serapion, and Papias, under the emperor Numerian. The first two, having borne with constancy torments of refined cruelty for the confession of the faith, were beheaded. Nicephorus, after having been laid on a heated gridiron and on the fire, was hacked into small pieces. Claudian and Dioscorus were burned alive; Serapion and Papias were killed with the sword. — In Africa, the holy martyrs Donatus, Justus, Herena, and their companions. — At Rome, the birthday of pope St. Felix III., great-grandfather of St. Gregory the Great, who relates of him that he appeared to St. Tharsilla, his niece, and called her to the kingdom of heaven. — At Constantinople, St. Tharasius, bishop, a man of great erudition and piety, to whom is addressed an epistle of pope Adrian I., in defence of holy images. — At Nazianzus, St. Caesarius, whom his brother blessed Gregory the Theologian, says he saw among the hosts of the Blessed.\n\nTODAY'S SAINT OR FEAST\nThe Lenten Ember Day\nThe season sanctified by fasting, prayer, and ordination.\nThe Lenten Ember Days belong to the Church's quarterly sanctification of the seasons, joining fasting and prayer to the needs of the clergy and the whole Christian people.\nIn Lent the Ember discipline presses more deeply: the faithful ask God to purify the Church, strengthen sacred ministers, and make penance fruitful rather than theatrical.\nLet the Ember day widen your Lent. Your penance is not merely personal improvement; it is prayer with the Church for the Church.\nBREVIARY WITNESS\nFasting with the Church for the Church.\nMatins - Lenten Ember Day\n- The Lenten Ember Days join the penitential season to the Church's prayer for sacred ministers and the sanctification of the Christian people.\n- Their witness teaches that fasting is ecclesial. The faithful do penance not as isolated souls, but as members of the Mystical Body pleading for purity and holy order.\nOffer penance for the Church, her ministers, and those who hunger for valid sacraments.\nInstruction from the Breviary\nThe Breviary witness for Lenten Ember Day is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live.\nToday's witness is gathered under Fasting with the Church for the Church.. Its first point is this: The Lenten Ember Days join the penitential season to the Church's prayer for sacred ministers and the sanctification of the Christian people. Its next point develops the lesson: Their witness teaches that fasting is ecclesial. The faithful do penance not as isolated souls, but as members of the Mystical Body pleading for purity and holy order.\nThe practical instruction is: Offer penance for the Church, her ministers, and those who hunger for valid sacraments. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over.\n- What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend?\n- What virtue does the Church place before me through it?\n- What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson?\n\nTHE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE\nRevelation Was Entrusted to the Church\nThe Church places this truth before you today: Sacred Scripture and Apostolic Tradition are received within the Church, whose divinely assisted teaching office guards the deposit of faith. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Private reading must remain subject to the faith once delivered, because the Scriptures belong to the Church that received, preserved, and interprets them.\nThe grace to be practiced is Ecclesial penance and prayer for sacred ministers, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice persevering humility by praying before action, avoiding occasions, accepting counsel, and crediting every victory entirely to grace.\nThere is also an enemy to recognize: Resist private judgment when it sets itself above the Church's received doctrine. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing ecclesial penance and prayer for sacred ministers when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.\nDo the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Receive reminders of weakness and dependence without defensiveness, embarrassment, or the desire to prove spiritual strength. Guard the whole treasure through sustained vigilance and complete fidelity, especially where experience tempts you to feel secure.\nThe Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Irenaeus.\nYour resolution before God: Name the graces God has preserved for you in exile and thank Him for them plainly.\nCarry this word: The soul in exile is not abandoned.\nTHE PILGRIM'S MIRROR\n\"We be all frail: but thou shalt judge no man more frail than thyself.\"\nThomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 2, p. 11\nCatholic judgment rejects error without forgetting one's own need of mercy. Let vigilance begin with the disorder nearest at hand: your own.\n\nYou need not call falsehood harmless in order to be humble. Humility simply refuses to use another person's fault as shelter from repentance. Condemn what God condemns, pray for the soul in danger, and then ask whether the same root - pride, fear, sensuality, or human respect - has found a quieter form in you.\nToday's Practice: When another's fault irritates you, pray for that soul and examine the same root in yourself.\nDAILY EXAMEN\nIdentify every subtle leaning upon self, repent of presumption, and place your spiritual treasure anew in Our Lady's keeping.\n- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?\n- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?\n- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?\nPRAYER\nO Lord, when confusion, scarcity, or loneliness presses upon me, keep me from despair. Thou hast not abandoned the faithful who cling to truth.\nDAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM\nA brief rule to keep every day:\nBegin with morning prayer\nAdore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind.\nKeep the Angelus\nPause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation.\nSeek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament\nAttend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.\nReturn to Jesus and Mary\nUse frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation.\nPray the Rosary\nKeep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain.\nEnd with night prayer and examen\nGive thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.\nCONTINUE STUDY\nSt. Irenaeus and Apostolic Tradition: https://cityofgodinexile.com/champions-of-orthodoxy/st-irenaeus-and-apostolic-tradition-against-the-innovators?entered=1\nOpen this day in the Sacred Calendar: https://cityofgodinexile.com/sacred-calendar?date=2026-02-25&entered=1\nOpen this day's Daily Pilgrimage: https://cityofgodinexile.com/daily-dispatch?date=2026-02-25&entered=1\nBrowse the Formation Index: https://cityofgodinexile.com/daily-dispatch/formation?entered=1","html":"<!doctype html>\n<html lang=\"en\">\n <head>\n <meta charSet=\"utf-8\" />\n <meta name=\"viewport\" content=\"width=device-width, initial-scale=1\" />\n <title>City of God in Exile: Lenten Ember Day - 2026-02-25</title>\n </head>\n <body style=\"margin: 0; padding: 0; background: #0b1423;\">\n <div style=\"display: none; max-height: 0; overflow: hidden; opacity: 0;\">\n Lenten Ember Day. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over.</p>\n <ul style=\"margin: 0; padding-left: 22px;\">\n <li style=\"margin: 0 0 8px;\">What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend?</li><li style=\"margin: 0 0 8px;\">What virtue does the Church place before me through it?</li><li style=\"margin: 0 0 8px;\">What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson?</li>\n </ul></div>\n </div>\n \n \n <div style=\"padding: 20px 0; border-top: 1px solid #d9bf8b;\">\n <p style=\"margin: 0 0 8px; color: #7a5a21; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12px; font-weight: bold; letter-spacing: 1.2px; text-transform: uppercase;\">The Pilgrim&#39;s Spiritual Conference</p>\n <div style=\"color: #3a2a18; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.55;\"><h2 style=\"margin: 0 0 12px; color: #24180d; font-size: 25px; line-height: 1.1;\">Revelation Was Entrusted to the Church</h2>\n <p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">The Church places this truth before you today: Sacred Scripture and Apostolic Tradition are received within the Church, whose divinely assisted teaching office guards the deposit of faith. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Private reading must remain subject to the faith once delivered, because the Scriptures belong to the Church that received, preserved, and interprets them.</p><p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">The grace to be practiced is Ecclesial penance and prayer for sacred ministers, drawn from today&#39;s saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice persevering humility by praying before action, avoiding occasions, accepting counsel, and crediting every victory entirely to grace.</p><p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist private judgment when it sets itself above the Church&#39;s received doctrine. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing ecclesial penance and prayer for sacred ministers when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.</p><p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God&#39;s wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady&#39;s hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Guard the whole treasure through sustained vigilance and complete fidelity, especially where experience tempts you to feel secure.</p>\n <div style=\"margin-top: 14px; padding: 13px 15px; border-left: 3px solid #8c682a; background: #efe0bc;\"><p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">The Church&#39;s witness: this truth manifests the Church&#39;s mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Irenaeus.</p></div>\n <h2 style=\"margin: 18px 0 8px; color: #24180d; font-size: 20px; line-height: 1.1;\">Your Resolution Before God</h2>\n <p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">Name the graces God has preserved for you in exile and thank Him for them plainly.</p>\n <blockquote style=\"margin: 16px 0 8px; padding: 12px 14px; border-left: 3px solid #8c682a; background: #efe0bc; color: #24180d; font-size: 19px; line-height: 1.45;\">The soul in exile is not abandoned.</blockquote></div>\n </div>\n \n <div style=\"padding: 20px 0; border-top: 1px solid #d9bf8b;\">\n <p style=\"margin: 0 0 8px; color: #7a5a21; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12px; font-weight: bold; letter-spacing: 1.2px; text-transform: uppercase;\">The Pilgrim&#39;s Mirror</p>\n <div style=\"color: #3a2a18; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.55;\"><h2 style=\"margin: 0 0 8px; color: #24180d; font-size: 25px; line-height: 1.1;\">How shall I imitate Christ today?</h2>\n <blockquote style=\"margin: 0 0 8px; padding: 12px 14px; border-left: 3px solid #8c682a; background: #efe0bc; color: #24180d; font-size: 19px; line-height: 1.45;\">&ldquo;We be all frail: but thou shalt judge no man more frail than thyself.&rdquo;</blockquote>\n <p style=\"margin: 0 0 14px; color: #5d4320; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.45;\">Thomas à Kempis, <em>The Imitation of Christ</em>, Book I, chapter 2, p. 11</p>\n \n <p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">Catholic judgment rejects error without forgetting one&#39;s own need of mercy.
