[...] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.\" - Luke 12:32-34\nPassion Sunday\n2026-03-22 - Passiontide - Sunday of the First Class - violet\nPLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY\nPassion of Christ: the sufferings and death Jesus freely accepted for our salvation, from His agony in Gethsemane through His Crucifixion.\nPenance: repentance expressed through prayer, self-denial, reparation, and a real turning away from sin.\nReparation: prayer or sacrifice offered in love to make amends for sin and the dishonor it gives to God.\nTODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR\nHumiliation, opposition, and penance do not mean that God has ceased to govern. Our Lord redeemed the world through His obedient suffering on the Cross. When Catholics accept unavoidable trials without sin, perform penance, and continue obeying the truth, those sufferings can humble pride and deepen fidelity rather than lead to despair. Join St. Louis de Montfort's hope that Our Lady may have more faithful children and servants so that Jesus reigns more fully in hearts. Ask Our Lady to increase her faithful servants and, through them, establish the reign of Jesus across every part of life.\n\n\"I feel myself more than ever animated to believe and to hope all which I have had deeply engraven upon my heart, and have asked of God these many years, namely, that sooner or later the Blessed Virgin shall have more children, servants, and slaves of love than ever; and that, by this means, Jesus Christ, my dear Master, shall reign more in hearts than ever.\"\nSt. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 113\n\nThe saint states the end without ambiguity: the increase of Our Lady's faithful servants exists so that Jesus Christ may reign more in hearts. Marian devotion is measured by this Christward fruit—stronger faith in His doctrine, greater worship of His Majesty, firmer obedience to His commandments, deeper love of His Cross, and more ardent labor for souls.\n\nHope must become cooperation. Pray for the spread of true devotion, teach it accurately, embody it without contradiction, resist counterfeits, and help families and souls establish a durable rule of Catholic life. Never seek a Marian identity detached from Christ's reign or use love of unity to conceal error and compromise.\n\nPRACTICE\nRead John 8:46-59 and make an act of faith in Christ's eternal divinity. Keep a period of silence in honor of His approaching Passion.\n\nQUOTE OF THE DAY\n\"Their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.\"\nOur Lord Jesus Christ, Matthew 18:10, Douay-Rheims\n\nNOVENA IN PROGRESS\nNovena for the Annunciation - Day 7 of 9\n\nPreparing for Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 2026-03-25.\n\nPETITION\nPrepare to honor the Incarnation, Our Lady's fiat, and the obedience by which the Word was received.\n\nA FAITHFUL ACT\nPray the Hail Mary slowly and carry its fiat into every known call to obedience.\nROMAN MARTYROLOGY - March 22\nAt Narbonne, in France, the birthday of the bishop St. Paul, a disciple of the Apostles. He is said to have been the proconsul Sergius Paulus, who was baptized by the blessed apostle Paul, and left at Narbonne, where he was raised to the episcopal dignity when the apostle went to Spain. Having zealously discharged the office of preaching and performed miracles, he departed for heaven. — At Terracina, St. Epaphroditus, a disciple of the Apostles, who was consecrated bishop of that city by the blessed apostle Peter. — In Africa, the holy martyrs Saturninus and nine others. — The same day, the birthday of the Saints Callinica and Basilissa, martyrs. — An Ancyra, under Julian the Apostate, St. Basil, priest and martyr, who gave up his soul to God after having endured grievous torments. — At Carthage, St. Octavian, archdeacon, and many thousands of martyrs, who were slain by the Vandals for the Catholic faith. — In the same place, St. Deogratias, bishop of Carthage, who ransomed many captives taken from that city by the Vandals, and performed other good works, after which he went to rest in the Lord. — At Osimo, in the March of Ancona, St. Benvenutus, bishop. — In Sweden, St. Catharine, virgin, daughter of St. Bridget. — At Rome, St. Lea, a widow, whose virtues and happy death are related by St. Jerome. — At Genoa, St. Catharine, a widow, celebrated for her contempt of the world and her love of God.\n\nGOSPEL OF THE DAY\nBefore Abraham was made, I am.\nPassion Sunday - John 8:46-59\n\"Amen, amen I say to you, before Abraham was made, I am.\"\nWhen truth feels costly, stay near Our Lord in silence. He is not less divine because men reject Him, and His friends need not win every argument to remain faithful.\n\nTHE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL\nWhat This Gospel Teaches\nChrist declares His eternal divinity while His enemies harden themselves against the truth.\nThe Passion begins with the refusal to hear God when He speaks plainly.\nError corrected: The unbelief that masks itself as reason while refusing the light already given.\n- Where does this error tempt me in practice?\n- What act does this Gospel require of me today?\n\nTODAY'S SAINT OR FEAST\nPassion Sunday\nBefore Abraham was made, I am.\nPassion Sunday veils the sacred images and places the faithful before Christ's solemn testimony to His eternal divinity.\nThe conflict sharpens because unbelief cannot tolerate the true claim of Christ: He is not merely teacher or prophet, but the eternal Son who goes freely to His Passion.\nLet the veils teach reverence. Passiontide is not vague sadness; it is the solemn hour of the eternal Son moving toward sacrifice.\nBREVIARY WITNESS\nThe eternal Son enters Passiontide.\nMatins - Passion Sunday\n- The Passion Sunday office begins the solemn deepening of Lent as the Church turns toward the suffering of Christ.\n- Its Gospel witness is the Lord's claim of eternal being: before Abraham was made, He is; the Passion is therefore the sacrifice of the true Son of God.\nEnter Passiontide with adoration. The veiled images and graver tone call the soul to reverence before the eternal Son going to sacrifice.\nInstruction from the Breviary\nThe Breviary witness for Passion Sunday is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live.\nToday's witness is gathered under The eternal Son enters Passiontide.. Its first point is this: The Passion Sunday office begins the solemn deepening of Lent as the Church turns toward the suffering of Christ. Its next point develops the lesson: Its Gospel witness is the Lord's claim of eternal being: before Abraham was made, He is; the Passion is therefore the sacrifice of the true Son of God.\nThe practical instruction is: Enter Passiontide with adoration. The veiled images and graver tone call the soul to reverence before the eternal Son going to sacrifice. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over.\n- What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend?\n- What virtue does the Church place before me through it?\n- What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson?\n\nFROM MATINS\nThe ear of the heart and the words of God.\nMatins - Third Nocturn - Passion Sunday\nPope St. Gregory the Great\n\"Let each one ask himself if he, in the ear of his heart, heareth God's words.\"\n- The Breviary enters Passiontide with Christ asking who can convince Him of sin, and warning that those who are of God hear the words of God.\n- St. Gregory teaches that hearing God's words is not mere bodily listening. It requires obedience in the heart, discipline of bodily desires, refusal to live for worldly praise, and charity toward one's neighbor.\n- The insults cast at Christ reveal by their actions those who have rejected God's rule. The Lord's silence before one accusation shows His perfect self-command and His watchful care for His people.\nDo not measure fidelity by religious sound alone. Ask whether the heart obeys what it hears, and let Passiontide uncover every refusal to be governed by the words of God.\nTHE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE\nHold the Traditions\nThe Church places this truth before you today: Apostolic tradition is not nostalgia. It is the handing down of what the Church received from Christ and the Apostles. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Tradition protects the faithful from the tyranny of the present moment and from teachers who mistake novelty for life.\nThe grace to be practiced is Adoring faith in Christ's divinity, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice Christ-centered Marian zeal by making every honor of Our Lady bear fruit in faith, worship, obedience, virtue, and salvation.\nThere is also an enemy to recognize: Resist innovation that claims continuity while contradicting what was handed down. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing adoring faith in Christ's divinity when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.\nDo the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the labor and opposition involved in spreading true devotion without distortion, compromise, impatience, or self-promotion. Pray, teach, serve, and give example so devotion to Our Lady visibly strengthens the reign of Jesus in hearts and homes.\nThe Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Paul.\nYour resolution before God: Read John 8:46-59 and make an act of faith in Christ's eternal divinity. Keep a period of silence in honor of His approaching Passion.\nCarry this word: The Precious Blood teaches the price of grace.\nTHE PILGRIM'S MIRROR\n\"Words feed not the soul; but a good life refresheth the mind, and a clean conscience bringeth a man to a firm and stable trust in God.\"\nThomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 2, p. 10\nPious speech cannot replace obedience. Peace grows where known duty is fulfilled and forgiven sin is honestly confessed.\n\nThe soul sometimes speaks about prayer, holiness, or the crisis in the Church because speaking is easier than amendment. Do not despise true words, but require them first of yourself. Let the repair of neglected duties become proof that truth has entered the will.\nToday's Practice: Begin completing the neglected duties you have discussed more than performed, ordering them justly and without further excuse.\nDAILY EXAMEN\nExamine whether today's Marian devotion enlarged Christ's reign within you and aided its faithful extension to others.\n- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?\n- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?\n- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?\nPRAYER\nO Lord Jesus Christ, by Thy Precious Blood cleanse my conscience, strengthen my will, and teach me never to treat grace as cheap.\nDAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM\nA brief rule to keep every day:\nBegin with morning prayer\nAdore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind.\nKeep the Angelus\nPause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation.\nSeek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament\nAttend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.\nReturn to Jesus and Mary\nUse frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation.\nPray the Rosary\nKeep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain.\nEnd with night prayer and examen\nGive thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.\nCONTINUE STUDY\nHold the Traditions and Refuse the Innovators: https://cityofgodinexile.com/scripture-treasury/2-thessalonians-2-14-15-hold-the-traditions-and-refuse-the-innovators?entered=1\nOpen this day in the Sacred Calendar: https://cityofgodinexile.com/sacred-calendar?date=2026-03-22&entered=1\nOpen this day's Daily Pilgrimage: https://cityofgodinexile.com/daily-dispatch?date=2026-03-22&entered=1\nBrowse the Formation Index: https://cityofgodinexile.com/daily-dispatch/formation?entered=1","html":"<!doctype html>\n<html lang=\"en\">\n <head>\n <meta charSet=\"utf-8\" />\n <meta name=\"viewport\" content=\"width=device-width, initial-scale=1\" />\n <title>City of God in Exile: Passion Sunday - 2026-03-22</title>\n </head>\n <body style=\"margin: 0; padding: 0; background: #0b1423;\">\n <div style=\"display: none; max-height: 0; overflow: hidden; opacity: 0;\">\n Passion Sunday. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church&#39;s prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live.</p><p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">Today&#39;s witness is gathered under The eternal Son enters Passiontide.. Its first point is this: The Passion Sunday office begins the solemn deepening of Lent as the Church turns toward the suffering of Christ. The veiled images and graver tone call the soul to reverence before the eternal Son going to sacrifice. It is the handing down of what the Church received from Christ and the Apostles. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Tradition protects the faithful from the tyranny of the present moment and from teachers who mistake novelty for life.</p><p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">The grace to be practiced is Adoring faith in Christ&#39;s divinity, drawn from today&#39;s saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice Christ-centered Marian zeal by making every honor of Our Lady bear fruit in faith, worship, obedience, virtue, and salvation.</p><p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist innovation that claims continuity while contradicting what was handed down. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing adoring faith in Christ&#39;s divinity when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.</p><p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God&#39;s wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady&#39;s hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Pray, teach, serve, and give example so devotion to Our Lady visibly strengthens the reign of Jesus in hearts and homes.</p>\n <div style=\"margin-top: 14px; padding: 13px 15px; border-left: 3px solid #8c682a; background: #efe0bc;\"><p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">The Church&#39;s witness: this truth manifests the Church&#39;s mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Paul.</p></div>\n <h2 style=\"margin: 18px 0 8px; color: #24180d; font-size: 20px; line-height: 1.1;\">Your Resolution Before God</h2>\n <p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">Read John 8:46-59 and make an act of faith in Christ&#39;s eternal divinity.
