Many souls receive light and then return to forgetfulness. The pilgrim must instead turn light into rule: morning prayer, the Angelus, Rosary, examination, custody of speech, and fidelity to the duty before him. Through Mary to Jesus: receive grace humbly, answer it faithfully, and give the glory to God. Acknowledge that God is the source of every grace and has freely willed that His graces should come to us through the hands of Our Blessed Mother. Ask her to obtain the help needed to serve her Son today.\n\n\"It is not that we take her for the last end of our services, for that is Jesus Christ alone; but we take her for our proximate end, our mysterious means and our easy way to go to Him.\"\nSt. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 265\n\nHere St. Louis de Montfort guards true devotion from every distortion: Jesus Christ alone is the end. Mary never asks the soul to stop with her. Like her word at Cana, her maternal office is a continual direction toward obedience: do whatsoever He shall say to you.\n\nLet this give you both confidence and order. You need not approach the duties of grace as an orphan relying upon personal strength. Go to Jesus beside the Mother He gave you, but go prepared to hear Him, to renounce sin, to receive Catholic truth whole, and to obey.\n\nPRACTICE\nImitate the concrete virtues shown by today's saint, beginning in the hidden circumstances of your own state in life.\n\nQUOTE OF THE DAY\n\"Because it is written: You shall be holy, because I am holy.\"\nHoly Scripture, 1 Peter 1:16, Original Douay-Rheims\n\nNOVENA IN PROGRESS\nNovena to St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus - Day 2 of 9\n\nPreparing for St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus on 2026-10-03.\n\nTODAY'S MYSTERY\nHope, Confidence, and Detachment from the World\n\nPREPARATORY PRAYER\nO glorious Teresa of the Infant Jesus, through whose unshaken confidence God was so glorified, obtain for me the same filial trust and love which animated thy innocent heart and soul. Grant that I may practice self-abnegation, patience and confidence, and that my confidence may be a fountain of blessings which God pours out upon me. As confidence was for thee the key to the greatest treasures of God, so it may induce me to throw myself into my Saviour’s arms and say with David: ‘In Thee, O my God, I put my trust, let me not be confounded.’ Amen.\n\nMEDITATION\nChristian hope does not rest upon favorable circumstances. It believes God's promises, despises the empty standards of the world, and seeks God alone as the soul's love and final good.\n\nPETITION\nO Almighty God, Who art admirable in Thy Saints, grant me the gift of hope with which Saint Teresa of the Infant Jesus was endowed, that I may believe firmly Thy words, ‘Whatsoever you shall ask in My Name, it shall be given to you,’ and as Saint Teresa abandoned all the vanities of the world and consecrated herself to Thee with unshaken faith and confidence, may I also despise all that the world appreciates, and seek Thee alone Who art my love and my all. Amen.\n\nA FAITHFUL ACT\nSurrender one anxiety to divine Providence and renounce one vanity, distraction, or desire for human approval that competes with confidence in God.\n\nCONCLUSION\nPray one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be. Then pray the Act of Oblation of Saint Teresa of the Infant Jesus: My Lord and my God! O Most Blessed Trinity! I desire to love Thee and to make Thee loved by mankind. Since Thou hast loved me so much as to give me the only begotten Son for my Saviour and my Spouse, the infinite treasures of His merits are mine. These merits I offer to Thee with joy, beseeching Thee to behold me only as in the Face of Jesus, and in His Sacred Heart burning with love. Lastly, I offer Thee, O Blessed Trinity, the love and merits of the Blessed Virgin, my dearest Mother. To her I entrust this oblation, begging her to present it to Thee. Amen. Holy Child Jesus, have mercy on us. Our Lady of Victories, pray for us. Saint Teresa of the Infant Jesus, pray for us. Little Flower of Jesus, pray for us. Amen.\nROMAN MARTYROLOGY - September 25\nAt Emmaus, the birthday of blessed Cleophas, disciple of Christ. It is related that he was killed by the Jews, for the confession of our Lord, in the same house in which he had entertained Him, and where he was honorably buried. — At Rome, under the emperor Antoninus, St. Herculanus, soldier and martyr, who, being converted to Christ by the miracles wrought during the martyrdom of the, blessed bishop Alexander, was put to the sword, after enduring many torments. — At Amiens, in France, in the persecution of Diocletian, blessed Firmin, bishop. Under the governor Rictiovarus, after various torments, he suffered martyrdom by being beheaded. — At Damascus, the holy martyr Paul, Tata, his wife, and Sabinian, Maximus, Rufus, and Eugenius, their sons. Accused of professing the Christian religion, they were scourged, and tortured in other ways, until they gave up their souls to God. — In Asia, the holy martyrs Bardomian, Eucarpus, and twenty-six others. — The same day, St. Anathalon, bishop, who was a disciple of the blessed apostle Barnabas, and succeeded him in the See of Milan. — At Lyons, the decease of St. Lupus, at one time an anchoret, but later a bishop. — At Auxerre, St. Anacharius, bishop and confessor. — At Blois, St. Solemnius, bishop of Chartres, renowned for miracles. — The same day, St. Principius, bishop of Soissons, brother of the blessed bishop Remigius. — At Anagni, the holy virgins Aurelia and Neomisia. — At San Severino, the decease of St. Pacificus of St. Severin, confessor, of the Order of the Reformed Minorites of the Observance of St. Francis, illustrious by his extraordinary patience and love of solitude. He was placed in the calendar of saints by pope Gregory XVI.\n\nTHE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE\nGrace Heals and Elevates Nature\nThe Church places this truth before you today: Man is not saved by natural goodness, sentiment, or progress. He needs sanctifying grace, the merits of Christ, and persevering conversion. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church is holy because Christ is holy, because she possesses holy doctrine and sacraments, and because she forms saints by grace.\nThe grace to be practiced is Faithful obedience to the grace of the present day, drawn from the daily rule of fidelity. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Imitate Mary's gratitude. Magnify the Lord for His gifts instead of turning them into a reason for self-esteem.\nThere is also an enemy to recognize: Resist naturalism, which treats human improvement as though it could take the place of supernatural life. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing faithful obedience to the grace of the present day when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.\nDo the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. When consolation is absent, trust the order of divine Providence. Our Lady remains a Mother in darkness as surely as in joy. Give thanks before beginning, ask Mary's help while working, and return the completed act to Jesus without claiming it as your own.\nThe Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Thomas Aquinas.\nYour resolution before God: Imitate the concrete virtues shown by today's saint, beginning in the hidden circumstances of your own state in life.\nCarry this word: The saints are living teachers of doctrine and virtue.\nTHE PILGRIM'S MIRROR\n\"By resisting of passions, then, is gotten the very true peace of heart, and not by following them.\"\nThomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 6, p. 15\nPeace is not surrender to every feeling. It is order beneath God, won by grace when appetite is made to obey truth and duty.\n\nA passion grows louder when it expects immediate obedience. Do not be alarmed merely because anger, fear, discouragement, or desire speaks forcefully. Place a little silence between the movement and your consent, call upon Jesus and Mary, and choose what remains right.\nToday's Practice: Delay impulsive responses and choose the calmer acts required by truth and duty.\nDAILY EXAMEN\nMake your Magnificat in little: name God's mercies, diminish self, and entrust tomorrow to the Mother He has given you.\n- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?\n- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?\n- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?\nPRAYER\nO Lord, let the saints of this day teach me how doctrine becomes life, how virtue endures trial, and how fidelity resists the errors of its age.\nDAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM\nA brief rule to keep every day:\nBegin with morning prayer\nAdore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind.\nKeep the Angelus\nPause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation.\nSeek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament\nAttend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.\nReturn to Jesus and Mary\nUse frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation.\nPray the Rosary\nKeep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain.\nEnd with night prayer and examen\nGive thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.\nCONTINUE STUDY\nWhat Is Grace?: https://cityofgodinexile.com/catechism-foundations/what-is-grace?entered=1\nOpen this day in the Sacred Calendar: https://cityofgodinexile.com/sacred-calendar?date=2026-09-25&entered=1\nOpen this day's Daily Pilgrimage: https://cityofgodinexile.com/daily-dispatch?date=2026-09-25&entered=1\nBrowse the Formation Index: https://cityofgodinexile.com/daily-dispatch/formation?entered=1","html":"<!doctype html>\n<html lang=\"en\">\n <head>\n <meta charSet=\"utf-8\" />\n <meta name=\"viewport\" content=\"width=device-width, initial-scale=1\" />\n <title>City of God in Exile: September Ember Day - 2026-09-25</title>\n </head>\n <body style=\"margin: 0; padding: 0; background: #0b1423;\">\n <div style=\"display: none; max-height: 0; overflow: hidden; opacity: 0;\">\n September Ember Day. He needs sanctifying grace, the merits of Christ, and persevering conversion. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church is holy because Christ is holy, because she possesses holy doctrine and sacraments, and because she forms saints by grace.</p><p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">The grace to be practiced is Faithful obedience to the grace of the present day, drawn from the daily rule of fidelity. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Imitate Mary&#39;s gratitude. Magnify the Lord for His gifts instead of turning them into a reason for self-esteem.</p><p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist naturalism, which treats human improvement as though it could take the place of supernatural life. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing faithful obedience to the grace of the present day when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.</p><p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God&#39;s wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady&#39;s hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Give thanks before beginning, ask Mary&#39;s help while working, and return the completed act to Jesus without claiming it as your own.</p>\n <div style=\"margin-top: 14px; padding: 13px 15px; border-left: 3px solid #8c682a; background: #efe0bc;\"><p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">The Church&#39;s witness: this truth manifests the Church&#39;s mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Thomas Aquinas.</p></div>\n <h2 style=\"margin: 18px 0 8px; color: #24180d; font-size: 20px; line-height: 1.1;\">Your Resolution Before God</h2>\n <p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">Imitate the concrete virtues shown by today&#39;s saint, beginning in the hidden circumstances of your own state in life.</p>\n <blockquote style=\"margin: 16px 0 8px; padding: 12px 14px; border-left: 3px solid #8c682a; background: #efe0bc; color: #24180d; font-size: 19px; line-height: 1.45;\">The saints are living teachers of doctrine and virtue.</blockquote></div>\n </div>\n \n <div style=\"padding: 20px 0; border-top: 1px solid #d9bf8b;\">\n <p style=\"margin: 0 0 8px; color: #7a5a21; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12px; font-weight: bold; letter-spacing: 1.2px; text-transform: uppercase;\">The Pilgrim&#39;s Mirror</p>\n <div style=\"color: #3a2a18; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.55;\"><h2 style=\"margin: 0 0 8px; color: #24180d; font-size: 25px; line-height: 1.1;\">How shall I imitate Christ today?</h2>\n <blockquote style=\"margin: 0 0 8px; padding: 12px 14px; border-left: 3px solid #8c682a; background: #efe0bc; color: #24180d; font-size: 19px; line-height: 1.45;\">&ldquo;By resisting of passions, then, is gotten the very true peace of heart, and not by following them.&rdquo;</blockquote>\n <p style=\"margin: 0 0 14px; color: #5d4320; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.45;\">Thomas à Kempis, <em>The Imitation of Christ</em>, Book I, chapter 6, p. 15</p>\n \n <p style=\"margin: 0 0 12px;\">Peace is not surrender to every feeling.
