24. Marian Examination of Conscience

Devotional Treasury: Sacred Heart, Holy Ghost, Sorrows, Holy Face, Precious Blood.

The Blessed Virgin Mary is the mirror of justice, the seat of wisdom, the refuge of sinners, and the model of every virtue. A Marian examination of conscience places the soul beneath her pure light, revealing faults more delicately and inspiring deeper sorrow for sin.

This is not because Mary replaces Christ as judge of souls. It is because no creature was ever so perfectly transparent to His light. What is most beautiful in is seen without stain in Our Lady. To examine oneself beneath her gaze is therefore to ask for a clean Catholic honesty: humble, exact, unembarrassed by truth, and hopeful because is real.

Such an examination is especially useful in exile. Souls in a corrupt age can become either coarse or evasive. They excuse their faults because everyone around them lives carelessly, or they grow so discouraged by the general collapse that they stop looking inward with seriousness. Mary corrects both distortions. She teaches the soul to hate sin without despair and to desire purity without illusion.

Before beginning, pray:

O Mary, conceived without original sin,
obtain for me light to know my sins
and to detest them with a perfect heart.

I. The Humility of Mary

Mary never sought her own praise or glory; she attributed all to God.

Ask yourself:

  • Have I been proud, self-sufficient, or unwilling to accept correction?
  • Have I boasted of my talents or sought praise?
  • Have I preferred my will to God's will?
  • Have I compared myself to others with jealousy or contempt?
  • Have I been offended when unnoticed or unappreciated?

True humility says with Our Lady: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord."

II. The Purity of Mary

Her heart, mind, and body were entirely pure.

Ask yourself:

  • Have I allowed impure thoughts, looks, or desires?
  • Have I watched, read, or listened to anything impure?
  • Have I acted immodestly in dress or behavior?
  • Have I failed to protect my senses, or encouraged impurity in others?
  • Have I tolerated impure friendships or conversations?

Mary's purity is a fire that burns away the stains of sin.

III. The Faith of Mary

She believed perfectly what God revealed.

Ask yourself:

  • Have I doubted or denied any truth of the Catholic Faith?
  • Have I neglected to learn my religion?
  • Have I been indifferent about doctrine?
  • Have I compromised with error or avoided defending the Faith out of human respect?
  • Have I read or listened to or worldly ideas that weaken belief?

Mary teaches us to say: "Be it done unto me according to Thy word."

IV. The Obedience of Mary

She submitted entirely to God's law and His will.

Ask yourself:

  • Have I obeyed God's commandments fully?
  • Have I resisted legitimate , whether in family, , or duty?
  • Have I been stubborn, rebellious, or resentful of my responsibilities?
  • Have I delayed obedience or complied only externally?

Mary's obedience was interior, prompt, and joyful.

V. The Charity of Mary

Her heart burned with love of God and love of neighbor.

Ask yourself:

  • Have I lacked in speech or action?
  • Have I harbored resentment, bitterness, or unforgiveness?
  • Have I spoken harshly, mocked others, or judged rashly?
  • Have I neglected works of mercy?
  • Have I been cold, inattentive, or impatient?

Mary's embraced the whole world beneath the Cross.

VI. The Prayerfulness of Mary

She kept all things in her heart and lived in unceasing communion with God.

Ask yourself:

  • Have I neglected daily prayer?
  • Have I prayed with distraction, coldness, or routine?
  • Have I failed to offer my day, my work, my sufferings to God?
  • Have I avoided silence, spiritual reading, or recollection?

Mary teaches the soul to listen for God in quiet fidelity.

VII. The Modesty and Simplicity of Mary

She was modest in dress, speech, behavior, and all her manner of life.

Ask yourself:

  • Have I been vain in clothing, appearance, or social media?
  • Have I acted boldly, rudely, or in a way unbecoming of a Catholic?
  • Have I sought attention or admiration?
  • Have I displayed worldliness or frivolity in conduct?

Mary's modesty reflects the hidden life of Nazareth.

VIII. The Patience of Mary

She endured suffering with perfect trust and without complaint.

Ask yourself:

  • Have I complained about crosses or inconveniences?
  • Have I been impatient with others, with trials, or with myself?
  • Have I resisted God's will when it contradicted my desires?
  • Have I used suffering to grow in virtue, or wasted it?

Mary teaches: "My soul doth magnify the Lord," even in sorrow.

IX. The Poverty and Detachment of Mary

She desired only God and was free from the love of earthly things.

Ask yourself:

  • Have I been attached to money, comfort, possessions, or status?
  • Have I been generous with the poor and with ?
  • Have I placed worldly security above trust in Divine Providence?

Mary's treasure was God alone.

X. The Silence of Mary

Her hidden life was filled with contemplation, not noise.

Ask yourself:

  • Have I sought distraction through constant noise or entertainment?
  • Have I spoken too much, too critically, or without necessity?
  • Have I avoided interior silence where God speaks to the heart?

Mary's silence was full of light.

XI. The Compassion of Mary

She intercedes for sinners, consoles the afflicted, and stands beneath every Cross.

Ask yourself:

  • Have I lacked mercy toward others' faults?
  • Have I failed to pray for those who suffer or who sin?
  • Have I been indifferent to the spiritual needs of others?

Mary's heart beats with compassion for all her children.

XII. The Maternal Heart of Mary

She longs for every soul to be saved.

Ask yourself:

  • Have I avoided speaking truth to those in error or sin?
  • Have I neglected the salvation of my family?
  • Have I failed to offer sacrifices for sinners?

Mary calls every soul to the Heart of her Son.

Conclusion

After examining your soul in the light of Mary's virtues, make a brief act of sorrow:

O Mother most pure, show me the wounds my sins have caused in the Heart of thy Son.
Obtain for me perfect , and lead me safely to the throne of His mercy.

Return to this examination regularly. Used well, it helps the soul recover delicacy of conscience, hatred of compromise, and confidence in repentance. Mary does not flatter. She forms. And because she is perfectly docile to the Holy Ghost, she helps the faithful see themselves truthfully so that they may return more cleanly to Christ.
