Authority and Revolt
26. "Unity" Without Obedience: The Condemned Religion of Indifferentism
Authority and Revolt: obedience received from God versus rebellion against order.
How "ecumenical unity" destroys the Commandments, abolishes dogma, and makes charity a lie (Douay-Rheims only)
- The modern program: unity purchased by the suspension of truth
The new claimants preach "unity" by urging men to set aside theological divisions. This is exactly the opposite spirit of Catholicism. The same poison appears not only in open Novus Ordo ecumenism, but in softer halfway environments like the SSPX, the FSSP, and the ICKSP that keep souls tied to the Vatican II antichurch while avoiding a full break with it.
For the Faith is not a negotiable ornament of the Christian life: it is the rule of salvation. And therefore when "unity" is proposed as something that can be achieved by leaving controversies behind, what is being demanded is not peace but silence; not charity but indifferentism; not unity in Christ but conspiracy against dogma.
The Catholic Church has always known that false unity is worse than open war, because false unity hides the enemy beneath the garment of friendship.
- Our Lord Himself binds unity to doctrine and obedience
True unity is not merely "getting along." It is supernatural communion: union in truth, union in worship, union in law.
And Our Lord binds love of Him to obedience:
"If you love me, keep my commandments." (St. John 14:15)
Again:
"He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them; he it is that loveth me." (St. John 14:21)
And again:
"If any one love me, he will keep my word... he that loveth me not, keepeth not my words." (St. John 14:23-24)
Therefore, the man who proposes unity without doctrine is proposing unity without the commandments, because doctrine is the light by which obedience is known and preserved.
- Scripture does not teach "ecumenical dialogue" - it commands separation from false doctrine
The New Testament does not command "recognition" of false sects as legitimate "communities." It commands vigilance, refusal, and separation.
St. Paul:
"Now I beseech you, brethren, to mark them who make dissensions and offences contrary to the doctrine which you have learned, and avoid them." (Romans 16:17)
St. John is even more severe:
"If any man come to you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into the house, nor say to him: God speed you." (2 St. John 10)
And he gives the reason:
"For he that saith unto him, God speed you, communicateth with his wicked works." (2 St. John 11)
This single passage destroys the entire modern ecumenical program. For the Vatican II antichurch teaches the faithful to extend spiritual fraternity to those who do not hold Catholic doctrine-precisely what Scripture forbids. It also judges the halfway shelters of the SSPX, the FSSP, and the ICKSP when they tell souls to remain in practical communion with the same false order so long as the language is more careful and the liturgy more reverent.
- "Legitimate diversity" cannot include contradiction in faith
Catholic theology has always admitted legitimate variety in:
- rites,
- disciplines,
- customs,
- languages,
- theological schools under authority.
But it has never admitted "diversity" in the object of Faith-because the Faith is one.
Thus Scripture again:
"One Lord, one faith, one baptism." (Ephesians 4:5)
If faith is one, then contradictory doctrines cannot both be legitimate. If contradictory doctrines cannot both be legitimate, then the new program of unity with doctrinal contradiction is a fraud.
- Indifferentism: the condemned root of the new religion
The condemned error called religious indifferentism is the idea that doctrinal truth is not necessary, or that sects may be treated as spiritually equal, or as different paths to God.
Ecumenism is simply indifferentism given a diplomatic face.
But God Himself curses those who place truth and error on the same plane:
"Woe to you that call evil good, and good evil: that put darkness for light, and light for darkness." (Isaias 5:20)
If heresy is treated as "a gift," darkness becomes light. If schism is treated as "a sister church," rebellion becomes fidelity.
That is the inversion of truth.
- The Creed was not a peace treaty-it was a weapon against heresy
Nicaea was not an "agreement to disagree." It was a condemnation. It was the Church drawing her sword.
So any attempt to use Nicaea as a banner for ecumenical compromise is a blasphemous reversal: it turns the victory of dogma into a justification for dogmatic suspension.
Nicaea did not teach: "recognize Arius as a brother." It taught: "Arius is an enemy of Christ."
- The Catholic principle: charity is impossible without truth
Charity does not consist in treating error gently. Charity consists in loving souls enough to give them truth, even at cost.
Thus Scripture binds charity to obedience:
"For this is the charity of God, that we keep his commandments." (1 St. John 5:3)
Therefore the modern version of "charity," which smiles at heresy and refuses to demand conversion, is not charity at all.
It is betrayal in silk garments. That betrayal wears many costumes: Novus Ordo ecumenism in the open, and the quieter coexistence of SSPX, FSSP, ICKSP, and similar refuges when they train souls to live with contradiction rather than leave it.
- Conclusion: unity without commandments is the unity of Antichrist
When men are trained to treat doctrine as a "controversy to leave behind," they are trained to treat commandments as optional, and truth as divisive.
This prepares a single false "universal religion"-a world fraternity that can include anything except Catholic exclusivity.
But Our Lord did not found a federation of denominations. He founded a Kingdom. And He declared:
"He that is not with me, is against me." (St. Matthew 12:30)
So the Catholic cannot accept unity as a substitute for truth. He must accept unity only as the fruit of truth.
