Street of First Doctrine
3. What Is Grace?
Street of First Doctrine: first Catholic doctrine for souls learning how to believe, pray, and live.
"By the of God, I am what I am." - 1 Corinthians 15:10
is one of the first Catholic words a beginner must understand. Without , man cannot live the supernatural life. He may possess natural gifts, intelligence, strength, good manners, affection, and human discipline, but these do not make him a child of God or give him eternal life.
The catechism answer is simple: is a supernatural gift of God, freely given to us for our salvation. It helps us to believe, repent, love God, avoid sin, do good, and live as children of God.
is not merely God's kindness from far away. It is God's gift acting in the soul. It raises man above what he can do by nature and orders him toward heaven.
The question is not first, "Am I naturally good?" It is not first, "Do I have good intentions?" It is not first, "Do other people think well of me?" The question is: "Do I have the of God?"
This question matters because man was made for a supernatural end. He was made to be happy with God forever in heaven. Natural strength cannot reach that end by itself. A stone cannot lift itself to the stars. A dead branch cannot give itself life. A soul without cannot give itself supernatural life.
is therefore necessary. It is not an extra comfort for religious people. It is life from God.
is free. Man does not force God to give it. He does not earn the first by natural merit. God moves first. God calls, enlightens, strengthens, forgives, heals, and sanctifies.
This should make the soul . If a man believes, repents, prays, resists , or does good in a way pleasing to God, he must thank God. does not destroy man's cooperation, but it comes before it and makes it possible.
This also gives hope. A weak soul is not asked to save itself by its own strength. God gives help. The sinner can repent because God calls him. The can resist because God assists him. The beginner can learn because God gives light.
Sanctifying is the that makes the soul holy and pleasing to God. It is a created sharing in God's own life. By sanctifying the soul becomes a child of God, a temple of the Holy Ghost, and an heir of heaven.
This is received first through Baptism. Baptism washes away sin and gives supernatural life to the soul. A baptized soul in sanctifying is not merely improved on the outside. It is made alive before God.
Sanctifying can be lost by . This is why is so terrible. It does not merely break a rule. It kills the supernatural life of the soul. A soul in must not be comforted by vague religious words. It must be called to repentance, confession, and return to God.
Actual is God's help given to enlighten the mind and strengthen the will so that a person may do good and avoid evil. It is called actual because it helps in particular acts.
When a sinner is moved to repent, that is . When the mind sees that a is dangerous, that is . When the will receives strength to pray, forgive, confess, resist , tell the truth, or duty, that is .
Actual does not force the soul like a machine. Man can resist . He can delay, excuse himself, harden his heart, and turn away. That is why the soul must answer promptly.
does not destroy nature. It heals, elevates, and orders nature to God. A man remains a man. A woman remains a woman. A family remains a family. Work, study, friendship, suffering, and ordinary duties remain real. does not make these things meaningless. It places them under God.
This is important because some people imagine holiness as escape from ordinary life. Catholic truth is richer. can make a father more fatherly, a mother more motherly, a child more obedient, a worker more honest, a suffering person more , and a sinner truly repentant.
perfects what sin wounds. It does not excuse disorder. It heals disorder by bringing the soul back under divine rule.
The are the ordinary channels of . Christ did not leave souls to vague spiritual feelings. He gave visible that truly confer when received rightly.
Baptism gives the first life of . Confirmation strengthens. The Holy Eucharist nourishes the soul. restores sanctifying when it has been lost by . Extreme Unction strengthens the sick and dying. Holy Orders gives for the priestly office. Matrimony gives for Christian marriage.
This is why seriousness matters. The are not empty ceremonies or family customs. They are divine instruments for the salvation and sanctification of souls.
Sin is the enemy of . wounds and weakens the soul. kills supernatural life in the soul. A beginner must learn this clearly.
Many people today speak as though God's mercy means sin is not dangerous. That is . Mercy exists because sin is dangerous. Christ died for sinners because sin is real, not because sin is harmless.
A soul that wants must avoid , repent quickly when it falls, confess sins honestly, and make use of the helps God gives. is not permission to remain in disorder. It is power to leave disorder and live for God.
Because comes from God, the soul must pray. Prayer asks for light, strength, repentance, perseverance, and final salvation. A person who does not pray is trying to live the supernatural life without asking for supernatural help.
The beginner should learn simple prayers and mean them: acts of faith, hope, , , the Our Father, the Hail Mary, the Glory Be, morning offering, examination of , and prayers for perseverance.
Prayer does not replace the . The do not excuse prayerlessness. Catholic life needs both: received through the and continually asked from God.
The soul must learn that natural goodness is not enough for heaven. Man needs .
The soul must learn that is a gift. must give way to gratitude.
The soul must learn the difference between sanctifying and actual . One gives supernatural life; the other helps the soul act according to God.
The soul must learn that kills in the soul and must be confessed.
The soul must learn to seek through prayer, the , , and prompt cooperation with God's help.
is a supernatural gift of God, freely given to us for our salvation. By the soul is made alive, helped, healed, strengthened, and ordered toward heaven.
A beginner should ask: Am I in the state of ? Do I avoid ? Do I pray for God's help? Do I receive the seriously? Do I cooperate with the God gives?
Without , man cannot reach the end for which he was made. With , the weak can be strengthened, sinners can repent, families can be , and souls can walk toward heaven.
