These books have nourished the interior life of Catholics across generations. Read them slowly, prayerfully, and more than once. They are not ornaments for a collection, but companions for the pilgrim on the road to the City of God.
A Small Rule for Spiritual Reading
Do not attempt to read the whole shelf at once. Choose one book that answers a present duty or spiritual need; read a few pages with ; mark one truth to remember; and end by making one resolution before God.
Spiritual reading does not replace Holy Scripture, 's liturgy, prayer, examination of , or to duty. Its purpose is to lead the soul more faithfully into them. A book has been well read when is diminished, prayer becomes more faithful, sin is resisted more promptly, suffering is carried with Christ, and becomes more obedient to truth.
First Foundations
The Imitation of Christ
A severe and consoling school of humility, recollection, self-knowledge, and union with Christ. Read a little at a time, especially when vanity, curiosity, or the desire for human praise has disturbed the soul.
The Spiritual Combat
This manual teaches distrust of self, confidence in God, custody of the faculties, and persevering resistance to temptation. It is especially useful when good resolutions repeatedly fail and the pilgrim must learn to fight without discouragement.
Introduction to the Devout Life
True devotion is shown as possible and necessary in every lawful state of life. Its counsels train prayer, virtue, speech, friendship, work, and recreation beneath the commandments of God rather than beneath mood or fashion.
Uniformity with God's Will
A short instruction in conforming the will to God in prosperity, contradiction, sickness, loss, and ordinary duty. Return to it when trust becomes merely verbal and self-will resists what divine Providence permits.
The Spiritual Exercises
The Principle and Foundation places every creature beneath man's last end: the praise and service of God and the salvation of his soul. The work should be used soberly and, when making the Exercises formally, under competent Catholic direction.
Prayer and the Interior Life

A fuller work of ascetical and mystical theology for sustained study rather than hurried reading. It traces the normal development of sanctifying grace toward Christian perfection beneath the Cross and the action of the Holy Ghost.

The Glories of Mary
A rich defense and practice of confidence in Our Lady's maternal intercession. Read it so that Marian devotion may increase gratitude for the Redemption, hatred of sin, recourse in temptation, and love for Jesus Christ.
True Devotion to Mary
This work teaches total consecration to Jesus Christ through Mary as a radical renewal of baptismal dependence upon Christ. Its true fruit is not self-display but deeper obedience, humility, mortification, and conformity to Our Lord.
The Secret of the Rosary
A practical and doctrinal companion for praying the Rosary with faith, attention, and perseverance. It helps the pilgrim resist reducing the Rosary to hurried repetition by returning the mind to the mysteries of Christ.
The Secret of Mary
A brief entrance into the interior practice of holy slavery of love: acting with Mary, in Mary, through Mary, and for Mary, wholly for Jesus Christ. Its rule is self-effacement so that Our Lady may form Christ in the soul.

A corrective for activism: exterior works bear supernatural fruit only when they proceed from union with God. It forms parents, teachers, writers, and apostles to guard prayer and interior life before attempting to give what they have not received.

The Mystical City of God
A vast devotional life of Our Lady intended to stir imitation of her virtues and gratitude for the mysteries of Christ. It should be read as private revelation, not as a fifth Gospel, a source of new doctrine, or a substitute for the Church's public revelation.
Read with the Church: Private revelation binds no Catholic as an article of Faith. Every devotional inference remains subject to the certain teaching and worship of the Church.
