Contemplations

What Stands at the Center?

Flat earth, the globe, and the greatest lie: a contemplation of the counterfeit Church.

Suppose the earth is flat.

The lie was not merely that men drew the earth with the wrong shape. They moved the center.

God created a stable earth beneath the heavens: the appointed habitation of man, the theater of the Incarnation, the ground upon which the Cross was planted, and the place from which Christ ascended bodily into heaven. Men replaced this ordered world with a globe rotating through space, orbiting the sun, carried through a galaxy, and possessing no fixed position in the material universe.

The earth was no longer presented as the established dwelling governed from above. It became a moving object governed by impersonal forces.

The same displacement was imposed upon religion.

Christ established His Church as the visible center of supernatural order upon earth: the teacher of nations, guardian of revelation, dispenser of the sacraments, and ark outside of which there is no salvation. Modern religion moved that center. Divine revelation became one religious perspective among many. The Church became one denomination within a larger human family. Her fixed doctrine was made to appear historically conditioned, while man's changing consciousness became the practical standard of judgment.

The first revolution displaced the earth from the center of the physical system. The second displaced God from the center of human life.

The governing frame of reference

Every technical description of motion requires a frame of reference. Position, direction, and velocity are measured in relation to something treated as the reference.

If the reference point moves, everything described from that point appears differently.

The Catholic frame of reference is fixed: God reveals; the Church receives and teaches; man believes and obeys. Truth judges man.

Modernism reverses the frame. Man's experience, historical situation, psychology, and supposed needs become the reference point. Revelation is then interpreted according to man. Man judges truth.

This is the ecclesiastical equivalent of moving the coordinate origin. The words may remain—Church, Mass, priesthood, salvation, unity—but their positions and meanings are recalculated around a different center.

When the origin is wrong, every coordinate derived from it is displaced.

Revolution and rotation

In the modern astronomical model, the earth is assigned several motions simultaneously: rotation upon its axis, revolution around the sun, movement with the solar system through the galaxy, and movement of the galaxy itself.

Theologically, modern man is also kept in perpetual motion. Doctrine develops. Worship evolves. Morality adapts. Authority changes its language. Yesterday's condemnations are reinterpreted by today's pastoral necessities. Nothing is permitted to remain immovable except the principle that everything must continue changing.

But Catholic truth does not revolve around the age.

The age must revolve around Christ.

The Church may apply an unchanging doctrine to new circumstances, but she cannot rotate from truth to contradiction. Development can make explicit what was contained implicitly; it cannot place today's affirmation in orbit around yesterday's denial.

The center of mass and the center of authority

In celestial mechanics, bodies do not strictly orbit the geometric center of one another. They move about a common center of mass, or barycenter. The greater mass exercises the dominant gravitational influence.

The spiritual parallel is revealing. What possesses the greatest weight in a religious system becomes its operative center.

In Catholicism, God possesses infinite authority. His revelation determines doctrine, worship, morality, and government. Human judgment has a real but subordinate place.

In the religion of modern man, the center of spiritual mass shifts toward humanity. Human dignity, human experience, human dialogue, human fraternity, and human approval become so weighty that divine revelation is forced into orbit around them.

God may still be named, but man has become the practical barycenter.

Everything is adjusted to avoid offending him. Doctrine is softened for him. Worship is redesigned around him. Moral demands are reinterpreted for him. Other religions are affirmed for his sake. God remains in the vocabulary while man governs the system.

Centripetal and centrifugal forces

An orbit requires an inward-directed acceleration. Without that governing attraction, the moving body does not remain in orbit.

Grace draws the soul toward God. Faith fixes the intellect upon revealed truth. Charity directs the will toward God as its final end. The sacraments unite souls to Christ. Legitimate authority holds the members of the Church within one divinely ordered communion.

Heresy acts centrifugally. It draws the intellect away from the center of revelation. Pride carries the will outward toward private judgment. False worship separates religious affection from the Sacrifice instituted by Christ. Religious indifferentism scatters souls among competing centers.

Once Christ ceases to be the acknowledged center, the system does not become peacefully plural. It fragments. Every man eventually becomes a center unto himself.

Invariants

In mathematics and physics, an invariant is something that remains unchanged when coordinates or descriptions change.

The Church also possesses divinely guarded invariants:

  • The deposit of faith does not change.
  • Defined dogma cannot become false.
  • The nature of the Holy Sacrifice cannot be transformed into a Protestant memorial.
  • The moral law cannot reverse itself.
  • The Four Marks cannot disappear.
  • The Church cannot become the universal teacher of a false religion.

External circumstances may change. Languages, governments, technologies, and political boundaries may change. But the essential properties of the Church remain invariant because her Author remains the same.

A claimant that changes the supposed invariants is not merely using a different coordinate system. It is describing a different object.

Calibration

A measuring instrument must be calibrated against a trustworthy standard. If the standard is corrupted, the instrument may produce consistent and precise measurements that are nevertheless wrong.

Human reason also requires calibration. It is not destroyed by faith, but it must be measured against divine revelation and freed from pride.

Modern theology recalibrated itself against modern man. Once human opinion became the standard, fidelity to revelation began to appear extreme, while contradiction appeared moderate. False worship seemed pastoral; religious indifferentism seemed charitable; refusal to compromise seemed cruel.

The instrument still produced learned documents, elaborate arguments, and carefully defined terminology. But intellectual sophistication cannot correct a corrupted standard.

Precision is not truth when the instrument has been calibrated against error.

Error propagation

In a technical system, one false initial condition can corrupt every later calculation. The error may be small at the beginning, yet increase as the system develops.

So it is with the counterfeit church.

Begin with one false premise: a church may contradict the religion previously taught and still remain the same Church.

From that premise follow further errors:

  • A false council must be defended because it came from the visible institution.
  • A false rite must be accepted because that institution promulgated it.
  • False doctrines must be reinterpreted as legitimate development.
  • Contradictions must be blamed upon misunderstanding.
  • Those who preserve the former Faith must be portrayed as disobedient.
  • The identity of the Church must finally be detached from the identity of her doctrine.

The system becomes internally elaborate because every new contradiction requires another compensating explanation.

Epicycles of explanation

An inadequate model is sometimes preserved by adding corrective mechanisms whenever observation does not fit expectation. The system becomes increasingly complicated because its defenders will modify everything except the governing assumption.

The same thing occurs in counterfeit ecclesiology.

When the purported Church teaches what the Catholic Church condemned, defenders invent an interpretive distinction. When it gives sacred worship to error, they appeal to pastoral context. When its universal discipline endangers faith, they say individual Catholics must privately resist. When its authorities undermine doctrine, they insist that the office remains trustworthy even though its public exercise cannot be followed.

One qualification is placed upon another until the believer is asked to accept this impossibility:

The indefectible Church remains indefectible by continually defecting in ways that Catholics must recognize and resist.

These are theological epicycles constructed to preserve a false identification.

The map and the territory

A map is not validated by its elegance, popularity, or official approval. It is validated by its correspondence to the territory.

Likewise, the name “Catholic Church” is not validated by possession of buildings, bureaucracies, diplomatic recognition, numerical strength, or historical addresses. The claimant must correspond to the reality Christ established.

Does she teach the same Faith?

Does she offer the same Sacrifice?

Does she condemn the errors previously condemned?

Does she preserve the same supernatural end?

Does she remain one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic?

A map that systematically contradicts the land is not the land. An institution that systematically contradicts the Catholic Faith is not made Catholic by printing the name upon itself.

The deepest revolution

The deepest revolution is therefore not heliocentrism considered merely as an astronomical arrangement. It is the habit of moving the God-given center and then commanding mankind to reinterpret everything around the replacement.

The created order is replaced by a theoretical order.

Revelation is replaced by religious experience.

The Church is replaced by an institution modeled upon the modern world.

The altar is replaced by an assembly.

Sacrifice is replaced by celebration.

Conversion is replaced by dialogue.

Mission is replaced by fraternity.

God remains named, but man becomes the governing center.

The restoration must therefore begin by recovering the true point of reference:

God does not revolve around man.

Truth does not revolve around history.

Doctrine does not revolve around opinion.

The Church does not revolve around the world.

Man, history, reason, authority, and the whole created order must revolve around God.

That is the strongest form of the comparison: not simply flat earth against globe, but an order received from God against a system reconstructed around man.
