46. What Is Particular Judgment?

Street of First Doctrine: first Catholic doctrine for souls learning how to believe, pray, and live.

"It is appointed unto men once to die, and after this the judgment." - Hebrews 9:27

Particular judgment is the judgment each soul receives immediately after death. A beginner must learn this because death is not followed by a second earthly chance, reincarnation, or vague wandering. The soul goes before God.

The catechism answer is simple: Particular judgment is the judgment of the individual soul immediately after death, by which God determines heaven, purgatory, or hell according to His and mercy.

Each soul dies once and is judged in truth.

The question is not, "What did men think of me?" It is, "What will God judge?"

At death, reputation falls away. Excuses fall away. Masks fall away. The soul appears before God as it is: in or in , faithful or unrepentant, truthful or self-deceived.

The judgment of God is exact.

The soul is judged immediately after death. Time for merit has ended. The earthly life has closed. The state of the soul at death matters with eternal seriousness.

This is why confession, , conversion, and preparation for death cannot be delayed.

No one should presume on a future hour he does not possess.

God judges faith, , works, sins, , duties, graces received, repentance, , mercy shown, and mercy refused.

He sees not only outward acts but thoughts, motives, consent, negligence, and hidden choices.

Nothing is forgotten by God. Nothing is misunderstood by Him.

The most important question at death is whether the soul dies in the of God. destroys sanctifying . A soul dying unrepentant in cannot enter heaven.

This is hard, but it is merciful to know.

The soul should live each day in such a way that death does not find it at war with God.

Particular judgment should not lead to despair. God is merciful to the contrite. The are given for salvation. A soul that repents, confesses, and seeks should hope in Christ.

Fear becomes holy when it leads to repentance and vigilance.

The Christian prepares for judgment by living in now.

The soul must learn that judgment follows death.

The soul must learn that God's judgment is exact and just.

The soul must learn to live in sanctifying .

The soul must learn not to delay confession and conversion.

The soul must learn to hope in Christ while fearing sin.

Particular judgment is the judgment of the individual soul immediately after death, by which God determines heaven, purgatory, or hell according to His and mercy.

A beginner should ask: Am I living in ? Do I delay confession? Do I excuse ? Do I prepare for death? Do I trust Christ enough to repent now?

Judgment is coming. The wise soul lives today under the light of that hour.
