Street of First Doctrine
10. What Is The Church?
Street of First Doctrine: first Catholic doctrine for souls learning how to believe, pray, and live.
"Thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my , and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." - Matthew 16:18
is not a human club, private opinion group, religious feeling, or loose association of sincere believers. is founded by Jesus Christ. She teaches His doctrine, offers His sacrifice, gives His , governs in His name, and guards the way of salvation.
The catechism answer is simple: is the visible society founded by Jesus Christ, under lawful pastors, to teach, sanctify, and govern men in His name, so that they may be saved.
This answer must be learned carefully. If a beginner does not know what is, he will not know where Christ's doctrine, , , and worship are to be found.
The question is not first, "Where do I feel comfortable?" It is not first, "Which group do I prefer?" It is not first, "Which religion seems kindest to me?" The question is: "What did Christ found?"
Christ did not leave the world with a vague religious memory. He founded a . He gave her doctrine, , , pastors, mission, and promises. The soul must therefore seek as Christ made her, not as modern preference imagines her.
This is merciful. God did not leave every person to invent Christianity privately.
Christ says, "I will build my ." belongs to Him. She is not founded by the people, by the state, by scholars, by reformers, or by private inspiration. She is founded by the Son of God.
Because Christ founded , no one has to replace her doctrine with novelty, her worship with invention, her with symbols, or her government with .
The beginner should understand this from the start. is received, not invented.
is visible. She has doctrine that can be professed, that can be received, worship that can be offered, pastors who can teach and govern, and members who can be recognized.
This does not mean that every member is holy. It means that is not an invisible idea known only to God. Christ compared His to a city set on a mountain.[1] A city is visible.
The matters because many errors hide behind invisible religion. They say is only the collection of sincere hearts, or all believers in all sects, or a spiritual feeling without visible doctrine and . That is not Catholic teaching.
is also the Mystical Body of Christ. Christ is the Head. The faithful are members. The Holy Ghost gives life to the Body. The nourish it. unites it. Doctrine gives it one confession.
This mystery is deeper than any human organization. is visible, but she is not merely human. She lives from Christ.
This helps the beginner avoid two errors. One error treats as only an institution. The other treats her as only invisible spirituality. Catholic truth holds both: visible society and Mystical Body.
Christ founded one , not many churches teaching contradictory doctrines. St. Paul teaches "one Lord, one faith, one baptism."[2]
This means religious contradiction cannot be treated as harmless variety. If one group teaches that the Mass is sacrifice and another denies it, both cannot be teaching the same faith. If one teaches priesthood and another rejects it, both cannot be the same in doctrine.
The unity of is unity in truth, worship, , and lawful . False unity avoids these questions. Catholic unity requires them.
is known by her . She is One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic.
She is One because she has one faith, one sacrifice, one life, and one principle of under Christ.
She is Holy because Christ is holy, her doctrine is holy, her sanctify, and she produces saints.
She is Catholic because she is : for all nations, all times, all peoples, and the whole truth.
She is Apostolic because she comes from the Apostles in doctrine, mission, , and lawful succession.
These marks are not empty titles. They are objective signs by which is recognized.
Christ gave to His . He sent the Apostles to teach all nations, baptize them, and teach them to observe all things He commanded.[3] He gave Peter a special office when He said, "I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven."[4]
exists to guard truth and save souls. It is not permission to invent doctrine or command against God. True serves what Christ gave.
This is especially important in times of crisis. A beginner must learn both and discernment. He must know that Christ gave real , and he must also know that no one may use the appearance of to overthrow the faith received from Christ.
teaches because Christ commanded her to teach. The Catholic does not assemble doctrine from private preference. He receives the faith handed down by .
This includes doctrine about God, Christ, Mary, sin, , the , the commandments, the last things, and herself. A Catholic mind is formed by receiving, not by selecting.
Teaching is an act of mercy. Souls cannot love what they do not know. They cannot avoid error if truth is never stated plainly.
sanctifies through the , the Mass, prayer, blessings, , doctrine, and discipline. She does not merely tell man to be better. She gives the means of established by Christ.
Baptism gives supernatural life. restores it. The Eucharist nourishes it. The other strengthen souls according to their state and need.
This is why is not optional. Souls need . Christ placed the ordinary means of in His .
governs by laws, discipline, judgments, and pastoral ordered toward salvation. Government is necessary because truth and worship must be guarded, must be administered rightly, and souls must be guided away from danger.
Modern man often dislikes because he confuses with oppression. Catholic truth teaches that received from God is a service of order. It should lead souls to truth, worship, and holiness.
When government is abused or counterfeited, the answer is not rebellion against all . The answer is fidelity to the Christ truly gave and to the faith that exists to protect.
is necessary for salvation because Christ is necessary for salvation, and is His Mystical Body and the ark of salvation. No one is saved apart from Christ and His .
This doctrine must be spoken carefully. It does not mean that Catholics may judge the hidden state of every soul. God knows hearts, ignorance, guilt, , and final repentance. But it does mean that no one may treat false religion as safe, or as optional, or conversion as unnecessary.
The duty is clear: seek , receive the true faith, enter by Baptism if unbaptized, live in , and remain faithful.
may suffer persecution, betrayal, corruption among men, exile, and apparent humiliation. Christ did not promise that every visible arrangement would remain impressive. He promised that the gates of hell would not prevail against His .
This means the faithful must not confuse outward strength with truth. remains what Christ made her even when many betray, imitate, obscure, or her.
The remain necessary in crisis. One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic are not slogans. They are lights for .
The soul must learn that Christ founded one .
The soul must learn that teaches, sanctifies, and governs in His name.
The soul must learn the : One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic.
The soul must learn that is necessary for salvation and cannot be replaced by .
The soul must learn to love as Christ's Mystical Body and to reject unity, false worship, and false .
is the visible society founded by Jesus Christ, under lawful pastors, to teach, sanctify, and govern men in His name, so that they may be saved.
A beginner should ask: What did Christ found? Do I know the ? Do I receive doctrine from or from private preference? Do I understand why , worship, and matter? Do I love enough to seek her truth without compromise?
Christ did not abandon souls to confusion. He founded His , promised her , and gave her the means by which men may come to salvation.
