5. Why Must We Be Baptized?
Street of First Doctrine: first Catholic doctrine for souls learning how to believe, pray, and live.
"Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." - John 3:5
Baptism is the first . A beginner must understand it early because no one begins the Christian life by inward claim or self-declaration. Christ gave a real by which the soul is washed, reborn, and brought into His .
The catechism answer is simple: We must be baptized because Baptism takes away original sin, gives sanctifying , makes us children of God, members of Christ, and heirs of heaven, and brings us into .
Baptism is not merely a symbol. It truly does what Christ instituted it to do.
The question is not first, "Do I feel religious?" It is not first, "Do I come from a Christian family?" It is not first, "Do I admire Jesus?" The question is: "Have I been born again of water and the Holy Ghost?"
Christ Himself teaches the necessity of this new birth. Natural birth gives natural life. Baptism gives supernatural life. A person cannot enter the life of by wishing, imagining, or inventing his own rite. He must receive what Christ gave.
This is why Baptism belongs at the foundation of Catholic life.
Baptism is the that cleanses the soul from sin and gives the life of . It is administered by washing with true water while saying the words commanded by Christ: "I baptize thee in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost."
The water is not magic. The minister is not acting by private power. Christ acts through the He instituted. The outward washing signifies and effects the inward cleansing of the soul.
Because Baptism is a , its matter, form, and intention matter. True water must be used. The Trinitarian form must be used. The minister must intend to do what does in Baptism.
Baptism removes original sin. Every child of Adam is born without sanctifying and with a fallen nature wounded by sin. This is not because the child personally committed Adam's act, but because human nature fell in Adam and is transmitted in that fallen condition.
By Baptism, the guilt of original sin is taken away and sanctifying is given. The soul becomes alive before God.
The wounds of the Fall remain: suffering, death, ignorance, weakness, and disordered desire. But Baptism truly changes the soul. It is not a mere public sign of belonging. It is spiritual rebirth.
Baptism gives sanctifying . This means the baptized soul receives supernatural life and becomes pleasing to God. The soul is not only forgiven. It is made a temple of the Holy Ghost.
This is why Baptism is greater than any human ceremony. It gives what no family name, nationality, good intention, education, or natural can give. It gives divine life.
The beginner should understand that Catholic life begins with gift. God acts first. The soul receives life from Him and must then live according to that life.
By Baptism, a person becomes a child of God by . God is Father in a new and supernatural way. The baptized soul belongs to Christ and is marked with an indelible character. This mark cannot be erased.
Baptism also makes the soul a member of Christ and brings it into . The Christian is not meant to live as an isolated religious individual. He is joined to Christ's Mystical Body.
This is why Baptism carries obligations. A baptized person must believe the faith, worship God, avoid sin, the commandments, receive the , and live as a child of .
Infants should be baptized because they too need the of Christ. They are born with original sin, and Baptism is the Christ gave for rebirth.
Some people object that infants cannot understand. But Baptism is not first an act of human understanding. It is first God's gift. A child does not understand natural birth either, yet he truly receives life. In Baptism, the child truly receives supernatural life.
Parents therefore have a grave duty to bring their children to Baptism without unnecessary delay. To delay Baptism carelessly is to treat the child's soul lightly.
Christ teaches that Baptism is necessary. must never speak as though Baptism were optional. No one has to despise the Christ gave.
At the same time, God is not bound by His in the way we are bound to receive them. has taught carefully about baptism of blood and baptism of desire in extraordinary cases. These teachings do not make Baptism unnecessary. They show that God's mercy is not powerless when a soul is prevented from receiving the through no fault of his own.
The ordinary rule remains clear: those who can receive Baptism must receive Baptism. Parents must baptize their children. Converts must seek Baptism. Catholics must not turn extraordinary cases into excuses for neglecting Christ's command.
Baptism calls for conversion. In adults, Baptism requires faith, repentance, and the will to leave sin. A person should not come to Baptism while intending to remain in grave sin or reject Catholic truth.
In infants, supplies the profession of faith through parents and sponsors. This means parents and sponsors must take their duty seriously. A baptized child must be taught the faith, trained in prayer, corrected in sin, and formed for Catholic life.
Baptism is not the end of formation. It is the beginning of supernatural life. Life must be nourished or it weakens.
The baptized renounce Satan, his works, and his pomps. This is not ceremonial language without consequence. It means the Christian rejects the kingdom of rebellion.
To renounce Satan is to reject sin, false worship, superstition, , , hatred, and every path that leads away from God. To profess faith is to stand beneath Christ.
This is why Baptism belongs to the conflict between the City of God and the city of man. The baptized soul is no longer its own. It has been claimed by Christ.
After Baptism, the Christian must guard the received. can destroy the life of in the soul, though it cannot erase the baptismal character. If a baptized person falls into , he must repent and return through the of .
The baptized should pray, learn the catechism, keep the commandments, sanctify Sundays and holy days, avoid occasions of sin, receive the worthily, and live as one who belongs to God.
To be baptized and then live like the world is a contradiction. Baptism gives a new life. That life must appear in worship, , speech, , family order, and daily .
The soul must learn that Baptism is necessary because Christ commanded the new birth of water and the Holy Ghost.
The soul must learn that Baptism removes original sin and gives sanctifying .
The soul must learn that Baptism makes a person a child of God, member of Christ, and member of .
The soul must learn that infants should be baptized without unnecessary delay.
The soul must learn that Baptism brings duties: faith, , worship, prayer, and rejection of Satan.
We must be baptized because Baptism takes away original sin, gives sanctifying , makes us children of God, members of Christ, and heirs of heaven, and brings us into .
A beginner should ask: Have I been validly baptized? Do I understand what Baptism gave me? Do I live as one who has renounced Satan and belongs to Christ? If I am responsible for children, do I treat their Baptism and formation as urgent duties before God?
Baptism is the gate of the life. It is the new birth by water and the Holy Ghost. It is Christ's mercy applied to the soul at the beginning of Christian life.
