44. What Is Catholic Authority?

"He that heareth you, heareth me." - Luke 10:16

Catholic authority is the authority Christ gave His Church to teach, govern, sanctify, and guard the faith until the end of the world. A beginner must learn this because Christianity is not private invention. Christ founded a visible Church with real authority.

The catechism answer is simple: Catholic authority is the power given by Christ to His Church to teach true doctrine, govern souls, administer the sacraments, and preserve the faithful in the apostolic faith.

Authority is not the enemy of truth. True authority serves truth.

The question is not, "What religion can I design for myself?" It is, "What authority did Christ establish?"

Private judgment cannot be the foundation of the Church. If every person becomes his own final rule of doctrine, unity is destroyed and revelation is made subject to opinion.

Christ did not leave His flock without shepherds.

All true Catholic authority comes from Christ. He is Head of the Church, King, Priest, Prophet, and Shepherd.

The Apostles received a real mission from Him. They were sent to teach, baptize, bind, loose, and govern in His name.

Authority in the Church is therefore not human self-appointment. It is received.

The Church teaches what she has received from Christ through Scripture and Apostolic Tradition. Doctrine is not invented by each age.

The faithful owe assent to the Church's received teaching because Christ is the source of that teaching.

When novelty contradicts the apostolic faith, novelty must be refused.

Church authority also governs: ordering worship, discipline, sacraments, duties, correction, and the care of souls.

Governance exists for salvation, not domination. Shepherds must serve truth, protect the flock, and resist wolves.

False shepherds abuse authority when they use office to weaken doctrine, excuse sin, or silence the truth.

Authority under Christ has limits. No authority may command sin, deny revealed truth, overturn the moral law, corrupt worship, or require betrayal of the faith.

True obedience is not blind surrender to error. It is submission to God and to lawful authority under God.

The Catholic rule is clear: God must be obeyed before men.

A beginner should not begin by trusting private taste. He should learn the catechism, Scripture in the mind of the Church, the commandments, the sacraments, and the received doctrine.

He should also learn prudence. In times of confusion, not every confident voice is a shepherd.

The soul must seek the Church's received teaching, not religious novelty.

The soul must learn that Christ founded a visible Church.

The soul must learn that authority comes from Christ.

The soul must learn that doctrine is received, not invented.

The soul must learn that authority serves truth.

The soul must learn that no one may command sin or error.
