48. What Is Hell?

Street of First Doctrine: first Catholic doctrine for souls learning how to believe, pray, and live.

"Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire." - Matthew 25:41

Hell is the eternal punishment of the damned, separated from God because they die in without repentance. A beginner must learn this because Our Lord warns of hell, and must not hide what Christ revealed.

The catechism answer is simple: Hell is the eternal separation from God and punishment of those who die unrepentant in .

Hell is terrible, but silence about hell is not mercy.

The question is not, "Do I find hell pleasant to consider?" No faithful soul does. The question is, "Did Christ warn of it?"

He did. Therefore must teach it, parents must not hide it, sinners must be warned, and every soul must flee .

Hell shows that sin is not a small thing.

The chief pain of hell is the loss of God. The soul was made for God, but the damned have rejected Him finally by dying in unrepented .

This loss is not a temporary sadness. It is eternal separation from the only Good that can satisfy the soul.

To lose God is the greatest misery.

Hell also includes punishment. Scripture speaks of fire, darkness, weeping, gnashing of teeth, and the undying worm.

These words are severe because the reality is severe. The soul should not soften them into harmless imagery.

Holy fear is a gift when it leads to repentance.

Hell is just because God does not force the unrepentant into communion with Himself. is rebellion against infinite Good. The soul that dies fixed in that rebellion receives the end it chose.

This mystery should the mind.

No one should argue with God in order to defend sin.

The doctrine of hell should not lead the contrite soul to despair. Christ died to save sinners. Confession is real. Mercy is real. Repentance is possible while life remains.

The purpose of warning is salvation.

The soul should fear hell enough to flee sin and trust Christ enough to repent.

The soul must learn that hell is real.

The soul must learn that is deadly.

The soul must learn that death in unrepented leads to eternal loss.

The soul must learn to warn with .

The soul must learn to repent without delay.

Hell is the eternal separation from God and punishment of those who die unrepentant in .

A beginner should ask: Do I believe Christ's warnings? Do I avoid ? Do I delay confession? Do I pray for sinners? Do I confuse mercy with denial of judgment?

Hell is a dreadful truth, but it is given as a warning. The soul that hears the warning should run to Christ while mercy is offered.
