60. St. Agatha and Purity That Cannot Be Bought

"They that were ready, went in with him to the marriage." - Matthew 25:10

St. Agatha belongs among the champions of orthodoxy because she shows that purity belongs to Christ and cannot be purchased by fear, favor, or violence. She was a virgin and martyr who refused the claims of lust and pagan power, choosing fidelity to Christ above bodily safety.

Her witness is especially necessary now because the modern world treats the body as ownerless matter or as property of desire. St. Agatha answers: the body belongs to God.

Chastity is not a private taste. It is obedience to the Lord who made and redeemed the body. St. Agatha teaches this with the clarity of martyrdom. She does not treat purity as negotiable when threatened. She keeps the lamp for Christ.

The city of man says desire has rights over truth. It says pressure can change moral law. It says the body may be used without reference to God. The virgin martyr condemns all of this without needing many words.

For Catholics, purity must be guarded before the hour of trial. A soul cannot spend its imagination, speech, eyes, and habits carelessly and expect courage to appear suddenly at the door.

St. Agatha's courage is not hatred of the body. It is reverence for the body under Christ. She suffers because she will not make peace with sin. That is not harshness. It is fidelity.

This matters for parents, young people, and all who fight impurity. The Church does not guard chastity because she despises love. She guards chastity because love must be true. A soul that surrenders purity surrenders part of its obedience.

The faithful in exile must teach this without shame and without cruelty. Purity is possible by grace, but it must be protected by rule, custody, prayer, and honest confession of danger.

The remnant should learn from St. Agatha:

• guard the body as belonging to Christ;
• refuse the lie that desire cancels law;
• protect children from impurity early;
• keep the imagination clean;
• ask for courage before pressure comes.

Her witness should strengthen souls who feel alone in resisting an impure age. Christ still makes virgins, penitents, spouses, and families holy.

St. Agatha and purity that cannot be bought belong among the champions of orthodoxy because she shows that chastity is public fidelity to Christ's rights over body and soul. Her lamp burns because it was kept for the Bridegroom.
