73. St. Venantius and Youth Made Serious for Christ

"Be glad in that day and rejoice; for behold, your reward is great in heaven." - Luke 6:23

St. Venantius belongs among the champions of orthodoxy because he shows that youth is not an excuse for softness. The Church honors him as a young martyr, and his witness teaches that grace can make the young courageous, pure, and faithful under pressure.

This is important now because many souls quietly assume that children and young people should be protected from serious Catholic demands. St. Venantius answers by his blood: the young are made for sanctity too.

Youth is often treated as a time for tolerated vanity, impurity, self-display, and delay. That is not Catholic formation. The young should be taught mercy, but also judgment; tenderness, but also courage; patience, but also the cost of fidelity.

St. Venantius teaches that Christ can ask much before the world thinks a soul is ready. The world trains the young to fear exclusion. The martyr teaches them to fear denying Christ.

This does not mean forcing heaviness upon children. It means giving them the truth early enough that holiness seems normal, possible, and worth suffering for.

Martyrs are made before they are killed. The soul that stands in public has usually been formed in hidden choices: prayer, obedience, purity, honesty, custody of speech, and refusal of small betrayals.

Parents should learn this well. A child does not become brave by being entertained into weakness. A child becomes brave by seeing faith lived seriously and lovingly at home.

The faithful in exile need this. Their children will meet confusion, false worship, impure customs, and contempt for Catholic truth. They need more than sentiment. They need formation.

The remnant should learn from St. Venantius:

• teach the young that sanctity is their calling;
• do not excuse vice because of age;
• form courage before public pressure arrives;
• give children saints who are strong;
• ask for purity and fortitude early.

The young need examples that make heaven seem worth more than approval.

St. Venantius and youth made serious for Christ belong among the champions of orthodoxy because he proves that grace does not wait for worldly permission. Christ can make the young faithful, brave, and ready for the crown.
