CITY OF GOD IN EXILE THE DAILY PILGRIMAGE "Now therefore, ye children, hear me: Blessed are they that keep my ways." - Proverbs 8:32 "Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. [...] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." - Luke 12:32-34 1st Sunday after the Epiphany 2026-01-18 - Time after Epiphany - Semi-Double Sunday - green PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY 1st Sunday after the Epiphany is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves Chair of St. Peter at Rome on this date. The Gospel, Breviary witness and Breviary sermon or lesson panels below come from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Epiphany: the feast of Christ being revealed to the nations, represented especially by the Magi who came to adore Him. Christology: the part of Christian teaching that studies who Jesus Christ is: one divine Person, truly God and truly man. Illuminative way: the stage of spiritual growth in which prayer and virtue deepen, helping a person understand God's truth more clearly and follow Christ more steadily. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR The mystery of the coming of Christ teaches the pilgrim to wait without surrender, to recognize divine humility, and to adore the King where He truly appears. Sacred time trains hope, but hope must remain disciplined by doctrine and worship. Honor Our Lady as God's masterpiece and the dawn that reveals Jesus Christ, the Sun of Justice. Greet Our Lady as the dawn and ask her to reveal Jesus Christ, the Sun of Justice, more clearly to your mind and life. "As she is the aurora which precedes and discovers the Sun of Justice, who is Jesus Christ, she ought to be recognised and perceived, in order that Jesus Christ may be so." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 50 The dawn is not the sun. Mary is a creature, the masterpiece of God's hands by grace and glory; Jesus Christ is the divine Sun of Justice. Yet God has joined the dawn to the coming of the Sun, and rightly knowing His Mother helps souls recognize the mystery of His Incarnation, His holiness, His tenderness, His kingship, and His saving mission. St. Louis de Montfort also says she must shine in mercy, might, and grace: receiving strayed sinners who return to the Catholic Church, opposing the enemies of God, and sustaining the faithful servants of Jesus Christ. Seek all three—mercy without indifferentism, might without cruelty, and grace without presumption. PRACTICE Ask what light God has already given you, then obey it visibly throughout your conduct. QUOTE OF THE DAY "Blessed is the man that findeth wisdom, and floweth with prudence." Holy Scripture, Proverbs 3:13, Original Douay-Rheims ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - January 18 The Chair of the apostle St. Peter. This festival was instituted to commemorate the establishment of the Holy See at Rome. — In the same place, under the emperor Claudius, the passion of St. Prisca, virgin ond martyr, who, after undergoing many torments, was crowned with martyrdom. — In Pontus, the birthday of the holy martyrs Moseus and Ammonius, soldiers, who were first condemned to work in the metal mines, and then cast into the fire. — In the same country, St. Athenogenes, an aged divine, who, on the point of enduring martyrdom by fire, joyfully sang a hymn, which he left in writing to his disciples. — At Tours, in France, St. Volusian, bishop, who was made captive by the Goths, and in exile gave up his soul to God. — In the same place, St. Leobardus, anchoret, a man of wonderful abstinence and humility. — In Brittany, St. Deicola, abbot, disciple of St. Columban. — At Como, St. Liberata, virgin. GOSPEL OF THE DAY They have no wine. Sunday after the Epiphany cycle - John 2:1-11 "Whatsoever he shall say to you, do ye." Bring the emptiness honestly. Our Lady notices need before it is announced, and she sends the soul to Jesus with confidence. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches Christ manifests His glory at Cana and confirms the dignity of Christian marriage. Our Lady leads souls to obedience, not to curiosity or self-will. Error corrected: The religion that honors Mary in word while refusing her command to obey Christ. - Where does this error tempt me in practice? - What act does this Gospel require of me today? TODAY'S SAINT OR FEAST The Chair of St. Peter at Rome The Roman form of apostolic fatherhood. This feast honors the authority Christ gave to St. Peter and the Roman see as a visible principle of unity in the Church. It teaches that Catholic fidelity is not merely admiration for doctrine in the abstract. The faith is received through the apostolic order Christ established. Pray for Roman fidelity with a sober heart. The office belongs to Christ before it belongs to any man. BREVIARY WITNESS The Roman chair and the visible order of Christ. Matins - Chair of St. Peter at Rome - The Breviary honors the Chair of St. Peter at Rome as a visible sign of apostolic authority and unity. - The feast teaches that Christ's Church is not an invisible sentiment, but an apostolic society founded on His promise. Love the office without confusing it with counterfeit claims or human weakness. Christ's institution remains prior to every crisis. Instruction from the Breviary The Breviary witness for Chair of St. Peter at Rome is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live. Today's witness is gathered under The Roman chair and the visible order of Christ.. Its first point is this: The Breviary honors the Chair of St. Peter at Rome as a visible sign of apostolic authority and unity. Its next point develops the lesson: The feast teaches that Christ's Church is not an invisible sentiment, but an apostolic society founded on His promise. The practical instruction is: Love the office without confusing it with counterfeit claims or human weakness. Christ's institution remains prior to every crisis. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over. - What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend? - What virtue does the Church place before me through it? - What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson? FROM MATINS Peter's Roman chair and the confession that Christ is God and man. Matins - Second Nocturn - St. Peter's See at Rome Pope St. Leo the Great and St. Hilary of Poitiers "Peter, the Prince of the Apostles, was sent to the capital city of the Roman Empire." - The Breviary keeps St. Peter's Roman See as the providential planting of apostolic authority in Rome, from which the light of the Gospel would shine through the nations. - Pope St. Leo teaches that Peter did not shrink from Rome, though superstition and every gathered error filled the imperial city. - St. Hilary joins Peter's confession to Christology: the Son of God is also the Son of Man, and without this confession there is no Saviour for us. Love the Roman chair for what Christ placed there: confession, keys, feeding of the sheep, and visible apostolic fatherhood. Refuse every counterfeit that separates authority from the true Christ. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Truth and Charity Cannot Be Divided The Church places this truth before you today: Charity loves the real good of the soul, and therefore cannot ask truth to be hidden, softened into falsehood, or traded for comfort. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The saints defended truth sharply when souls were endangered, yet their severity was ordered to salvation, not pride. The grace to be practiced is Visible apostolic fidelity, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Unite mercy, fortitude, and dependence upon grace in every encounter, refusing both harshness and compromise. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist the counterfeit charity that calls correction unkind while leaving souls in danger. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing visible apostolic fidelity when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Remain faithful through darkness, trusting the divine Sun when His light is obscured by trial, confusion, or persecution. Help sinners return, oppose errors that endanger souls, and strengthen faithful Catholics through prayer, truth, example, and sacrifice. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Bernard of Clairvaux. Your resolution before God: Ask what light God has already given you, then obey it visibly throughout your conduct. Carry this word: The illuminative way asks whether the soul obeyed the light already given. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Learn now to die to the world, that thou mayest then live with Christ." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 23, p. 41 Christian death to self is not despair but preparation for life with Christ. Refuse the command of every attachment that draws you from God's will, beginning with the strongest. The world tells you to preserve every comfort and construct an identity from passing things. Christ teaches you to travel lightly toward eternity. You need not despise God's gifts; receive them gratefully, but practice being able to surrender them when His will, charity, or duty requires it. Today's Practice: Accept unnoticed sacrifices without seeking relief or recognition. DAILY EXAMEN Ask whether your conduct reflected Christ's light or obscured it through sin, cowardice, harshness, vanity, or false mercy. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, do not let me seek more knowledge while neglecting known duty. Make me prompt, recollected, humble, and faithful to grace. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. Ponga la virtud en práctica de este modo: Pray for lawful shepherds and for fidelity to doctrine. ORACIÓN O Lord, do not let me seek more knowledge while neglecting known duty. Make me prompt, recollected, humble, and faithful to grace. REGLA DIARIA DEL PEREGRINO Una regla breve para guardar cada día: Comenzar con la oración de la mañana Reconozca a Dios y ofrézcale el día antes de atender otras obligaciones.
