CITY OF GOD IN EXILE THE DAILY PILGRIMAGE "Now therefore, ye children, hear me: Blessed are they that keep my ways." - Proverbs 8:32 "Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. [...] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." - Luke 12:32-34 Sexagesima Sunday 2026-02-08 - Septuagesima - Sunday of the Second Class - violet PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Sexagesima Sunday is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves St. John of Matha, Confessor on this date. The secondary saint panel below comes from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Sexagesima: the second Sunday of the traditional pre-Lenten season, when the parable of the sower teaches the faithful to receive and preserve God's word before Lent. Confessor: in the traditional calendar, a male saint who openly professed the Faith by a holy life but was not killed as a martyr. Apostolic: belonging to the faith, mission, teaching, or authority handed down from Christ through the apostles. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR The Church does not leave the faithful to pass through time as though days were neutral. This observance teaches the soul to receive the day under grace, to remember what God has done, and to let sacred time order study, prayer, and perseverance. Ask for the undivided self-gift that holds back nothing from Jesus Christ and expects no wage beyond the honor of belonging to Him. Give Jesus Christ all that you are, possess, can acquire, suffer, accomplish, and become, without exception or demand for reward. "The slave gives himself whole and entire to his master, all he has and all he can gain, without any exception." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 71 The human institution described in St. Louis de Montfort's comparison included powers no human being may justly exercise over another as over an animal. His spiritual analogy concerns the total rights that the Creator and Redeemer truly possesses and the total gift made freely by love. It must never be used to excuse abuse, coercion, or sinful commands by human authorities. Whole and entire means present and future: body, soul, faculties, goods, merits, relationships, labor, suffering, reputation, plans, and death. Without exception means no secret room marked mine alone. Ask where you still demand wages from God—comfort, success, understanding, protection from every trial—and give even that demand to Him. PRACTICE Read the parable of the sower in Luke 8:4-15 and name the distraction, hardness, or worldly care most likely to choke God's word in you. QUOTE OF THE DAY "For by the greatness of the beauty, and of the creature, the Creator of them may be seen, to be known thereby." Holy Scripture, Wisdom 13:5, Original Douay-Rheims NOVENA IN PROGRESS Novena to the Holy Face - Day 1 of 9 Preparing for Holy Face of Jesus on 2026-02-17. PETITION Ask for reparation, reverence, hatred of blasphemy, and love for the suffering Face of Christ before Lent begins. A FAITHFUL ACT Offer the day's prayers, sacrifices, and duties in reparation for blasphemy, irreverence, false worship, and sins against the first three commandments. ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - February 8 OT. JOHN of Matha, confessor, founder of the Order of the Most Holy Trinity, for the redemption of captives, who reposed in the Lord on the 17th of December. — Also, St. Jerome 2Emiliani, confessor, founder of the Congregation of Somascha, who slept in the Lord on the 8th of this month. He was numbered among the Saints by Clement XIII., his feast being assigned to the 20th of July. — At Rome, the holy martyrs Paul, Lucius, and Cyriacus. — In the Lesser Armenia, the birthday of the holy martyrs Denis, Emilian and Sebastian. — At Alexandria, under the emperor Decius, the martyr St. Cointha, whom the Pagans seized, led to the idols and urged to adore them. As she refused witli horror, they put her feet in chains, and dragged her through the streets of the city, mangling her body in a barbarous manner. — At Constantinople, the birthday of the holy martyrs, monks of the monastery of Dins, who, bringing the letter of pope St. Felix against Acacius, were barbarously killed for their defence of the Catholic faith. — In Persia, in the time of king Cabades, the commemoration of the holy martyrs, who were put to death by various kinds of torments on account of their faith in Christ. — At Pavia, the bishop St. Juventius, who strenuously labored in preaching the Gospel. — At Milan, the demise of St. Honoratus, bishop and confessor. — At Verdun, in France, St. Paul, a bishop renowned for miracles. — At Muret, near Limoges, the birthday of the abboc St. Stephen, founder of the Order of Grandmont, celebrated for his virtues and miracles. — In the monastery of Vallumbrosa, blessed Peter, cardinal and bishop of Albano, of the Congregation of Vallumbrosa, of the Order of St. Benedict, surnamed Igneus, because he passed through fire uninjured. GOSPEL OF THE DAY The seed is the word of God. Sexagesima Sunday - Luke 8:4-15 "And that in the good ground, are they who in a good and perfect heart, hearing the word, keep it." Ask Our Lord for good soil. Even a distracted heart can be tilled by humility, silence, and sincere obedience whenever His will is known. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches The same seed bears different fruit according to the state of the heart. Perseverance, not first emotion, proves the good soil. Error corrected: The habit of hearing sacred truth without letting it take root. - Where does this error tempt me in practice? - What act does this Gospel require of me today? TODAY'S SAINT OR FEAST Sexagesima Sunday The seed of the word and the guarded heart. Sexagesima places the parable of the sower before the faithful, showing the different soils on which the word of God falls. The day teaches that hearing is not enough. The soul must resist distraction, shallowness, temptation, and worldly thorns if doctrine is to bear fruit unto patience. Make the heart good ground. The word of God is not barren; the danger is the soul that will not keep it. SECONDARY SAINT ASSIGNED TO THIS DATE St. John of Matha Confessor and founder for the ransom of captives. St. John of Matha founded the Order of the Most Holy Trinity for the Redemption of Captives, giving his life to mercy ordered toward deliverance. His feast teaches that charity must sometimes become organized sacrifice. Captivity is not answered by feeling sorry from a distance; Catholic mercy prays, labors, gives, and risks for those in bondage. Ask St. John of Matha for mercy with hands and feet. The captive soul needs more than sympathy; it needs prayer, truth, sacrifice, and help toward freedom in Christ. BREVIARY WITNESS The seed received in patience. Matins - Sexagesima Sunday - The Sexagesima office keeps the parable of the sower before the faithful as Lent draws nearer. - Its witness warns that divine truth can be lost through distraction, shallowness, temptation, or the thorns of worldly care unless the soul guards it with patience. Protect the word after hearing it. Doctrine bears fruit when it is kept, pondered, and obeyed through contradiction. Instruction from the Breviary The Breviary witness for Sexagesima Sunday is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live. Today's witness is gathered under The seed received in patience.. Its first point is this: The Sexagesima office keeps the parable of the sower before the faithful as Lent draws nearer. Its next point develops the lesson: Its witness warns that divine truth can be lost through distraction, shallowness, temptation, or the thorns of worldly care unless the soul guards it with patience. The practical instruction is: Protect the word after hearing it. Doctrine bears fruit when it is kept, pondered, and obeyed through contradiction. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over. - What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend? - What virtue does the Church place before me through it? - What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson? FROM MATINS The word of God and the deceitfulness of riches. Matins - Third Nocturn - Sexagesima Sunday Pope St. Gregory the Great "The food of the soul is the word of God." - The Breviary places the parable of the sower before the faithful so they may examine how the word of God is received, lost, choked, or made fruitful. - St. Gregory teaches that riches become thorns when anxiety, deceit, and sin tear the soul away from heavenly fruitfulness. - The true riches are virtues, the kingdom of heaven, and a name written in the court above. Let the word sink below the surface. Refuse the thorns that make the soul busy, anxious, respectable, and barren. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Christ Is King Over Public Life The Church places this truth before you today: Our Lord's kingship is not confined to private devotion. Men, families, laws, and nations are subject to His authority. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church's Catholicity includes the public claim of Christ over all peoples, not merely the private consolation of believers. The grace to be practiced is Docile and persevering reception of the word, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice totality by allowing divine law and rightful duty to govern every part of life while refusing every sinful human demand. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist secular liberalism, which treats society as though it could be rightly ordered without Christ. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing docile and persevering reception of the word when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Serve without demanding consolation, explanation, gratitude, success, or exemption from the ordinary sacrifices of fidelity. Use every faculty, possession, opportunity, relationship, and labor as something already belonging to Jesus and placed at His disposal. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of catholic; the witness placed beside it is Pope Pius XI. Your resolution before God: Read the parable of the sower in Luke 8:4-15 and name the distraction, hardness, or worldly care most likely to choke God's word in you. Carry this word: Christ's true Church is known by four identifying marks: she is one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic. These marks protect the pilgrim from counterfeit religion. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "As long as we live in this world we may not be fully without temptation." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 13, p. 21 The presence of temptation does not itself prove that you have consented or that prayer has failed. The Christian remains in warfare. Temptation humbles presumption, reveals the need for grace, and gives the will an occasion to prefer God in deed rather than merely in desire. Do not converse needlessly with the temptation. Call upon Jesus and Mary, leave the occasion when you can, turn the imagination toward something lawful, and perform the nearest duty. If you fall, repent promptly; do not let wounded pride delay your return to mercy. Today's Practice: Prepare a firm response for today's habitual temptation: an aspiration, departure from the occasion, and prompt return to duty. DAILY EXAMEN Search for withheld territory and expected wages, surrender both, and rest in the sufficient honor of belonging to Christ. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, keep my mind beneath the Church that is one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic. Do not let feeling, family custom, fear, or numbers replace Thy marks. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. Error que resistir: Resist secular liberalism, which treats society as though it could be rightly ordered without Christ. VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR Docile and persevering reception of the word. La virtud de hoy es Docile and persevering reception of the word.. ORACIÓN O Lord, keep my mind beneath the Church that is one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic. Do not let feeling, family custom, fear, or numbers replace Thy marks. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
