CITY OF GOD IN EXILE
THE DAILY PILGRIMAGE
"Now therefore, ye children, hear me: Blessed are they that keep my ways." - Proverbs 8:32
"Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. [...] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." - Luke 12:32-34
Quinquagesima Sunday
2026-02-15 - Septuagesima - Sunday of the Second Class - violet
PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY
Quinquagesima Sunday is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves Ss. Faustinus and Jovita, Martyrs on this date. The secondary saint panel below comes from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance.
Quinquagesima: the final Sunday before Lent, when Christ foretells His Passion and heals a blind man to prepare the faithful to follow Him toward the Cross.
Communion of saints: the spiritual union in Christ of the faithful on earth, the souls being purified after death, and the saints in Heaven.
Passion of Christ: the sufferings and death Jesus freely accepted for our salvation, from His agony in Gethsemane through His Crucifixion.
TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR
The Church does not leave the faithful to pass through time as though days were neutral. This observance teaches the soul to receive the day under grace, to remember what God has done, and to let sacred time order study, prayer, and perseverance. Ask the Holy Ghost to reveal and cleanse the hidden self-love that stains even apparently good and religious actions. Ask the Holy Ghost through Our Lady to purify the motives beneath every prayer, duty, sacrifice, act of charity, and defense of truth.

"Our best actions are ordinarily stained and corrupted by the ground of evil which is so deeply laid up in us."
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 78

Original and actual sin leave wounds, habits, ignorance, weakness, and disordered inclinations that can mingle with good works. Prayer may seek consolation, truth-telling may seek victory, charity may seek gratitude, penance may seek admiration, and apostolate may seek control. Recognizing this is humility, not denial that grace produces real supernatural good.

Perfection is acquired only through union with Jesus Christ. Do not abandon good works because motives are mixed; bring the vessel for cleansing. Examine intention, confess sin, reject self-will, invoke Mary, act under grace, and return every fruit to God. Purification makes the work more truly His.

PRACTICE
Ask Christ for spiritual sight, then name the truths you need His grace to see and obey before Lent begins.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"The word of the cross, to them indeed that perish, is foolishness; but to them that are saved, it is the power of God."
St. Paul, 1 Corinthians 1:18, Douay-Rheims

NOVENA IN PROGRESS
Novena to the Holy Face - Day 8 of 9

Preparing for Holy Face of Jesus on 2026-02-17.

PETITION
Ask for reparation, reverence, hatred of blasphemy, and love for the suffering Face of Christ before Lent begins.

A FAITHFUL ACT

A short time after being baptized wTith his wife and all his household by the holy bishop Valentine, he was put to death with them. — At Teramo, St. Agape, virgin and martyr. — Also, the birthday of the holy martyrs Saturninus, Castulus, Magnus, and Lucius. — At Vaison, in France, St. Quinidius, bishop, whose death was precious in the sight of God, as is shown by frequent miracles. — At Capua, St. Decorosus, bishop and confessor. — In the province of Valeria, St. Severus, a priest, of whom St. Gregory says, that by his tears he recalled a dead man to life. — At Antioch, St. Joseph, deacon. — At Clermont, in Auvergne, St. Georgia, virgin.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
Lord, that I may see.
Quinquagesima Sunday - Luke 18:31-43
"Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me."
Cry out even if your prayer feels poor. The blind man had only need and faith, and Our Lord stopped for him.

THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL
What This Gospel Teaches
Christ foretells His Passion while the blind man cries for mercy.
Sight is given to the one who perseveres in prayer despite rebuke.
Error corrected: The blindness that talks about religion while failing to follow Christ to the Cross.
- Where does this error tempt me in practice?
- What act does this Gospel require of me today?

TODAY'S SAINT OR FEAST
Quinquagesima Sunday
The Passion foretold and the blind man healed.
Quinquagesima brings the faithful to the threshold of Lent with Christ foretelling His Passion and the blind man crying for mercy.
The day teaches that the Cross must be seen before it can be followed, and that charity gives supernatural sight where pride and fear leave the soul blind.
Stand by the road and cry to the Son of David. Lent is fruitful when the soul first admits that it cannot see without grace.
SECONDARY SAINT ASSIGNED TO THIS DATE
Ss. Faustinus and Jovita
Brother martyrs faithful through many torments.
Ss. Faustinus and Jovita are honored as martyrs who endured many torments for the confession of Christ.
Their feast teaches fraternal courage. The faithful are not meant to strengthen one another only in comfort, but also in perseverance, purity of confession, and readiness to suffer.
Ask these martyrs for companionable courage. A Catholic should help others stand, not merely admire endurance from a safe distance.
BREVIARY WITNESS
Lord, that I may see.
Matins - Quinquagesima Sunday
- The Quinquagesima office stands at the threshold of Lent with Christ foretelling His Passion and healing the blind man near Jericho.
- Its witness teaches that the soul needs supernatural sight before it can follow the suffering Christ with charity, courage, and penance.
Ask for sight before asking for strength. The Cross is followed rightly only when grace has healed blindness.
Instruction from the Breviary
The Breviary witness for Quinquagesima Sunday is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live.
Today's witness is gathered under Lord, that I may see.. Its first point is this: The Quinquagesima office stands at the threshold of Lent with Christ foretelling His Passion and healing the blind man near Jericho. Its next point develops the lesson: Its witness teaches that the soul needs supernatural sight before it can follow the suffering Christ with charity, courage, and penance.
The practical instruction is: Ask for sight before asking for strength. The Cross is followed rightly only when grace has healed blindness. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over.
- What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend?
- What virtue does the Church place before me through it?
- What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson?

FROM MATINS
Blind mankind enlightened by the Redeemer.
Matins - Third Nocturn - Quinquagesima Sunday
Pope St. Gregory the Great
"Through the coming of his Redeemer, he is enlightened."
- The Breviary brings the faithful to Lent's threshold with Christ foretelling His Passion and healing the blind man near Jericho.
- St. Gregory teaches that the blind man signifies mankind driven from Eden, darkened by condemnation, and restored to light by the coming Redeemer.
- The miracle confirms the Passion prophecy: if the disciples cannot yet receive the mystery by words, they are strengthened by Christ's deed.
Cry for sight before Lent begins. The soul cannot walk the road to Jerusalem unless Christ first opens its eyes.
THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE
The Holy Ghost Does Not Author Contradiction
The Church places this truth before you today: The Holy Ghost guides the Church into truth; He does not lead her to contradict the faith once delivered. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Appeals to the Spirit must be judged by apostolic doctrine, not by enthusiasm, novelty, or institutional pressure.
The grace to be practiced is Penitent sight and supernatural charity, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice purity of intention by seeking God's glory and souls while rejecting vanity, control, resentment, self-display, and appetite for reward.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist invoking the Holy Ghost to justify rupture from received doctrine. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing penitent sight and supernatural charity when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the humiliation of discovering self-love within good actions without yielding to discouragement or ceasing to do the good required. Begin, continue, and end every duty in union with Jesus, frequently surrendering mixed motives and returning the work through Mary.
The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Irenaeus.
Your resolution before God: Ask Christ for spiritual sight, then name the truths you need His grace to see and obey before Lent begins.
Carry this word: Authority is healed only when it submits to God.
THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR
"My son, be waking and diligent in the service of God, and think oft wherefore thou art come, and why thou hast forsaken the world."
Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 25, p. 45
Fervor is not religious excitement. It is the awakened will that remembers its end and returns to duty when nature grows sluggish. You were created to know, love, and serve God and thereby attain eternal life; every lesser purpose must remain beneath this one.

Recall why you began to seek a more faithful Catholic life. Then ask what has cooled: prayer postponed, sacrifice avoided, truth softened, or daily duty performed without love. Do not attempt to recover everything through emotion. Renew the next act, and let diligence carry the soul where feeling does not.
Today's Practice: Renew aloud the purpose of your life before God, then complete the duty you have most resisted.
DAILY EXAMEN
Examine the hidden motives that stained the day's best actions, repent without despair, and ask Jesus to purify and receive them.
- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?
- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?
- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?
PRAYER
O Lord, teach fathers, mothers, pastors, rulers, and children to receive authority as service beneath Thee, not as power against Thee.
DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM
A brief rule to keep every day:
Begin with morning prayer
Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind.
Keep the Angelus
Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation.
Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament
Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Return to Jesus and Mary
Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation.
Pray the Rosary
Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain.
End with night prayer and examen
Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.

El testimonio de hoy se reúne bajo Lord, that I may see.. Su primer punto es: The Quinquagesima office stands at the threshold of Lent with Christ foretelling His Passion and healing the blind man near Jericho.
La instrucción práctica es: Ask for sight before asking for strength. The Cross is followed rightly only when grace has healed blindness.

The Holy Ghost Does Not Author Contradiction
The Holy Ghost guides the Church into truth; He does not lead her to contradict the faith once delivered.
Nota de la Iglesia: Apostolic
Defensor: St. Irenaeus
Defensa católica: Appeals to the Spirit must be judged by apostolic doctrine, not by enthusiasm, novelty, or institutional pressure.
Error que resistir: Resist invoking the Holy Ghost to justify rupture from received doctrine.
VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR
Penitent sight and supernatural charity.
