CITY OF GOD IN EXILE THE DAILY PILGRIMAGE "Now therefore, ye children, hear me: Blessed are they that keep my ways." - Proverbs 8:32 "Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. [...] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." - Luke 12:32-34 Ash Wednesday 2026-02-18 - Lent - Feria of the First Class - violet PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Ash Wednesday is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves St. Simeon, Bishop of Jerusalem and Martyr on this date. The secondary saint and Breviary sermon or lesson panels below come from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Compunction: sorrow for sin that pierces the heart and moves a person toward repentance rather than despair. Passion of Christ: the sufferings and death Jesus freely accepted for our salvation, from His agony in Gethsemane through His Crucifixion. Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Humiliation, opposition, and penance do not mean that God has ceased to govern. Our Lord redeemed the world through His obedient suffering on the Cross. When Catholics accept unavoidable trials without sin, perform penance, and continue obeying the truth, those sufferings can humble pride and deepen fidelity rather than lead to despair. Enter St. Paul's daily death to self so that your life may remain hidden with Jesus Christ in God and bear abundant fruit. Offer the entire day as a death to fallen self and a hidden life with Jesus, embracing all mortification required by commandments and duty. "In order to empty ourselves of ourselves, we must die to ourselves daily." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 81 Daily death is not a token inconvenience. It is the continuing renunciation of self-willed judgment, disordered sense, possessiveness, vanity, curiosity, comfort, resentment, and every use of creatures apart from God. The grain must fall and die if it is to bear fruit; devotion that never mortifies self remains sterile. This death is governed by faith, reason, duty, and grace—not impulsive severity. Use the world without making it your end. See, hear, speak, think, work, rest, possess, and relate according to God's order. Let Mary teach the hidden death of Nazareth and the persevering death of Calvary. PRACTICE Begin Lent with a concrete rule of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Keep it hidden from display and return to it humbly after failure. QUOTE OF THE DAY "Be converted to me with all your heart, in fasting, and in weeping, and in mourning." The Prophet Joel, Joel 2:12, Douay-Rheims ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - February 18 At Jerusalem, the birthday of St. Simeon, bishop and martyr, who is said to have been the son of Cleophas, and a relative of the Saviour according to the flesh. He was consecrated bishop of Jerusalem after St. James, the brother of our Lord, and in the persecution of Trajan, after having endured many torments, he consummated his martyrdom. All who were present, even the judge himself, were astonished that a man one hundred and twenty years of age could bear the torment of crucifixion with such fortitude and constancy. — At Ostia, the holy martyrs Maximus and his brother Claudius, and Praepedigna, the wife of Claudius, with her two sons Alexander and Cutias, all of an illustrious family. By the order of Diocletian, they were apprehended and sent into exile. Afterwards being burned alive, they offered to God the sweet-smelling sacrifice of martyrdom. Their remains were cast into the river, but the Christians found them and buried them near that city. — In Africa, the holy martyrs Lucius, Sylvanus, Rutulus, Classicus, Secundinus, Fructulus, and Maximus. — At Constantinople, the holy bishop Flavian, who for having defended the Catholic faith at Ephesus, was buffeted and kicked by the partisans of the impious Dioscorus, and being banished, ended his life within three days. — At Toledo, St. Helladius, bishop and confessor. GOSPEL OF THE DAY Thy Father, who seeth in secret, will repay thee. Ash Wednesday - Matthew 6:16-21 "Lay up to yourselves treasures in heaven: where neither the rust nor moth doth consume." Choose a Lenten practice you can offer honestly to the Father. Keep it without display, and let each difficulty reveal where your heart still clings to earthly treasure. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches Christ commands fasting without performance. Penance is offered to the Father, not displayed to win admiration from other people. The Gospel joins fasting to the heart's true treasure. Lent exposes what the soul is protecting more carefully than friendship with God. Error corrected: The religious performance that seeks praise for sacrifice while refusing inward conversion. - Where does this error tempt me in practice? - What act does this Gospel require of me today? TODAY'S SAINT OR FEAST Ash Wednesday Remember, man, that thou art dust. Ash Wednesday opens Lent by placing ashes on the head and calling the soul to remember death, judgment, and the need for penance. The Church does not use ashes to crush hope. She uses them to tell the truth: life is short, sin is deadly, and mercy must be received with repentance. Receive the ashes as mercy. Dust is not the whole story, but it is the truth that teaches the soul to stop playing with sin and begin again. SECONDARY SAINT ASSIGNED TO THIS DATE St. Simeon of Jerusalem Bishop and martyr, kinsman of Our Lord. St. Simeon, bishop of Jerusalem and kinsman of Our Lord according to the flesh, is honored as a martyr who suffered in extreme old age. His feast teaches apostolic endurance across a long life. Age, weakness, and length of trial do not release the soul from fidelity; they can become the final place where fidelity is crowned. Ask St. Simeon for the grace to finish well. The last stretch of the road still belongs to Christ. BREVIARY WITNESS Remember that thou art dust, and return to God. Matins - Ash Wednesday - Ash Wednesday opens Lent with blessed ashes, a sign that human life is brief and that every sinner must repent before death and judgment. - The ashes are not a claim that hope is lost. They are a merciful warning to stop postponing conversion and to begin the Church's forty-day discipline of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Receive the ashes as a call to begin, not as a decoration. Choose a concrete rule of prayer, fasting, and mercy, and return quietly when weakness makes you fail. Instruction from the Breviary The Breviary witness for Ash Wednesday is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live. Today's witness is gathered under Remember that thou art dust, and return to God.. Its first point is this: Ash Wednesday opens Lent with blessed ashes, a sign that human life is brief and that every sinner must repent before death and judgment. Its next point develops the lesson: The ashes are not a claim that hope is lost. They are a merciful warning to stop postponing conversion and to begin the Church's forty-day discipline of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The practical instruction is: Receive the ashes as a call to begin, not as a decoration. Choose a concrete rule of prayer, fasting, and mercy, and return quietly when weakness makes you fail. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over. - What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend? - What virtue does the Church place before me through it? - What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson? FROM MATINS The aged bishop conformed to the Crucified Saviour. Matins - One Nocturn - St. Simeon, Bishop of Jerusalem and Martyr Roman Breviary "All marveled that a man worn with age—for he was one hundred and twenty years old—endured the bitter pains of the cross bravely and steadfastly." - The Breviary identifies St. Simeon, son of Cleophas, as the bishop appointed at Jerusalem after St. James. - Accused under Trajan because he was a Christian and a kinsman of Christ, he endured many torments rather than conceal either belonging. - His crucifixion conformed the aged shepherd to the manner of his Saviour's Passion, making episcopal endurance a final public sermon on the Cross. Ask St. Simeon for fidelity that grows old without growing soft. Years of service should prepare the soul to confess Christ more steadily when the final trial comes. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Four Marks Are Not Decorative The Church places this truth before you today: The Church must be one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic because she bears the identity Christ gave her, not because men assign those titles by preference. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The marks are tests of recognition. They prevent the faithful from confusing religious intensity, social size, antiquarian taste, or institutional claims with the true Church. The grace to be practiced is Compunction and sober beginning, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice universal self-denial by governing judgment, senses, passions, speech, possessions, time, comfort, and relationships under God. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist treating the marks as poetic language detached from visible doctrine, worship, and apostolic continuity. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing compunction and sober beginning when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Receive every legitimate contradiction of preference as an opportunity to die to self without inventing imprudent penances or neglecting duty. Let all prayers, duties, sacrifices, charity, and witness renounce self-will and bear complete fruit in union with Jesus through Mary. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is St. Robert Bellarmine. Your resolution before God: Begin Lent with a concrete rule of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Keep it hidden from display and return to it humbly after failure. Carry this word: Virtue grows by repeated acts under grace. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Take the cross, therefore, and follow Jesus, and thou shalt go into the life everlasting." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book II, chapter 12, p. 72 The cross is not an interruption of the pilgrimage; united to Christ, it is the road. Stand beneath it with Our Lady instead of fleeing into resentment. You are not asked to enjoy pain or pretend that evil is good. You are asked not to lose the good that grace can draw from what Providence permits. Carry the unavoidable burden without adding the heavier cross of rebellion, and offer its hidden weight for a soul in danger. Today's Practice: Receive today's unavoidable crosses and offer them through Mary for souls in need. DAILY EXAMEN Ask where self died and Christ lived, where self-will survived, and what sustained mortification must continue tomorrow. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, make doctrine fruitful in habit. Let truth become patience, courage, purity, recollection, penance, charity, and perseverance. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. El testimonio de hoy se reúne bajo Remember that thou art dust, and return to God.. Su primer punto es: Ash Wednesday opens Lent with blessed ashes, a sign that human life is brief and that every sinner must repent before death and judgment. La instrucción práctica es: Receive the ashes as a call to begin, not as a decoration. Choose a concrete rule of prayer, fasting, and mercy, and return quietly when weakness makes you fail. SERMÓN O LECCIÓN DEL BREVIARIO The aged bishop conformed to the Crucified Saviour. VERDAD DE LA FE The Four Marks Are Not Decorative The Church must be one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic because she bears the identity Christ gave her, not because men assign those titles by preference. Nota de la Iglesia: One Defensor: St. Robert Bellarmine Defensa católica: The marks are tests of recognition. They prevent the faithful from confusing religious intensity, social size, antiquarian taste, or institutional claims with the true Church. Error que resistir: Resist treating the marks as poetic language detached from visible doctrine, worship, and apostolic continuity. VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR Compunction and sober beginning. Ponga la virtud en práctica de este modo: Confess your sins plainly before God and ask for true contrition. ORACIÓN O Lord, make doctrine fruitful in habit. Let truth become patience, courage, purity, recollection, penance, charity, and perseverance. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
