CITY OF GOD IN EXILE
THE DAILY PILGRIMAGE
"Now therefore, ye children, hear me: Blessed are they that keep my ways." - Proverbs 8:32
"Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. [...] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." - Luke 12:32-34
First Sunday of Lent
2026-02-22 - Lent - Sunday of the First Class - violet
PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY
First Sunday of Lent is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves Chair of St. Peter at Antioch on this date. The secondary saint panel below comes from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance.
Mortification: the deliberate restraint of a desire or comfort so that disordered habits weaken and love of God becomes freer.
Chair of St. Peter: a feast honoring the teaching and governing office Christ entrusted to St. Peter and continued in his successors; the chair symbolizes that pastoral authority.
Apostolic: belonging to the faith, mission, teaching, or authority handed down from Christ through the apostles.
TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR
Humiliation, opposition, and penance do not mean that God has ceased to govern. Our Lord redeemed the world through His obedient suffering on the Cross. When Catholics accept unavoidable trials without sin, perform penance, and continue obeying the truth, those sufferings can humble pride and deepen fidelity rather than lead to despair. Implore confidently the intercession of Mary our Mother, who receives sinners tenderly and brings them to Jesus Christ, the Holy of Holies. Ask Our Lady to present you to Jesus with sincere contrition, strong confidence, and readiness to obey every grace He gives.

"Let us say boldly with St. Bernard, that we have need of a mediator with the Mediator Himself, and that it is the divine Mary who is the most capable of filling that charitable office."
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 85

Mary is not a second mediator of redemption. Jesus Christ alone paid the debt of sin and reconciles man to the Father. Her charitable office is maternal intercession with the Redeemer, wholly dependent upon His infinite merits and power. Through her, timid and sinful souls are encouraged to approach Him with repentance and confidence.

Confidence in Mary never licenses delay of conversion. The tender Mother who repels no repentant sinner does not protect attachment to sin; she obtains grace to renounce it. Bring Jesus the very faults that make you afraid, through her hands, with sincere contrition, recourse to the sacraments, and firm amendment.

PRACTICE
Name the temptation that most often bargains with you. Answer it with Scripture and leave every near occasion today.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Man is created to praise, reverence, and serve God our Lord, and by this means to save his soul."
St. Ignatius of Loyola, The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, First Week, Principle and Foundation, §23

ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - February 22
The Chair of St. Peter at Antioch, where the disciples were first called Christians. — At Hierapolis, in Phrygia, blessed Papias, bishop of that city, who had been, with St. Polycarp, a disciple of St. John in his old age. — At Salamis, in Cyprus, St. Aristion, who the same Papias says was one of the seventy-two disciples of Christ. — In Arabia, the commemoration of many holy martyrs who were barbarously put to death under the emperor Galerius Maximian. — At Alexandria, St. Abilius, bishop, who was the second pastor of that city after St. Mark, and administered his charge with eminent piety. — At Vienna, St. Paschasius, bishop, celebrated for his learning and holy life. — At Cortona, in Tuscany, St. Margaret, of the Third Order of St. Francis, whose body miraculously remained incorrupt for more than four centuries, giving forth a sweet odor, and producing frequent miracles. It is honored in that place with great devotion.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
Man liveth by every word that proceedeth from God.
First Sunday of Lent - Matthew 4:1-11
"Not in bread alone doth man live, but in every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God."
Begin Lent gently but truly. Do not despise a small mortification done with love; it teaches the soul to say no so that it may say yes more freely.

THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL
What This Gospel Teaches
Christ conquers temptation by obedience, fasting, and the word of God.
The devil offers shortcuts: appetite without discipline, spectacle without humility, kingdoms without the Cross.
Error corrected: The negotiation with temptation that tries to keep God while serving self.
- Where does this error tempt me in practice?
- What act does this Gospel require of me today?

TODAY'S SAINT OR FEAST
First Sunday of Lent
Christ tempted in the desert and victorious.
The First Sunday of Lent places Our Lord in the desert, fasting forty days and overcoming the tempter by the word of God.
The Gospel teaches that temptation is not mastered by confidence in self. Christ shows the pilgrim the weapons of obedience, fasting, Scripture rightly used, and refusal to bargain with the devil.
Enter Lent with Christ in the desert. Do not debate with temptation as though it deserved courtesy; answer by obedience, prayer, and the word of God received in the Church.
SECONDARY SAINT ASSIGNED TO THIS DATE
The Chair of St. Peter at Antioch
Apostolic authority moving through history under Christ.
This feast honors St. Peter's chair at Antioch and the apostolic mission entrusted to him by Christ.
It teaches that the Church's visible authority is not a later invention, but belongs to the history of the apostolic office.
When appearances trouble the soul, return to Our Lord's words. The promise is His before it is ours to understand.
BREVIARY WITNESS
Christ enters the desert and defeats the tempter.
Matins - First Sunday of Lent
- The First Sunday of Lent places Christ's forty-day fast and temptation in the desert before the faithful.
- Our Lord rejects each temptation by obeying His Father and answering with Scripture. He teaches that appetite, display, and power must remain subject to God.
Do not debate with temptation as though sin might offer a reasonable bargain. Answer with truth, leave the occasion, and use fasting to train desire for obedience.
Instruction from the Breviary
The Breviary witness for First Sunday of Lent is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live.
Today's witness is gathered under Christ enters the desert and defeats the tempter.. Its first point is this: The First Sunday of Lent places Christ's forty-day fast and temptation in the desert before the faithful. Its next point develops the lesson: Our Lord rejects each temptation by obeying His Father and answering with Scripture. He teaches that appetite, display, and power must remain subject to God.
The practical instruction is: Do not debate with temptation as though sin might offer a reasonable bargain. Answer with truth, leave the occasion, and use fasting to train desire for obedience. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over.
- What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend?
- What virtue does the Church place before me through it?
- What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson?

FROM MATINS
Christ tempted without inward surrender.
Matins - Third Nocturn - First Sunday of Lent
Pope St. Gregory the Great
"It was meet that He should thus overcome our temptations by His own."
- The Breviary begins Lent with Christ led by the Holy Ghost into the wilderness and tempted by the devil.
- St. Gregory distinguishes suggestion, delectation, and consent, teaching that Christ endured temptation outwardly without any inward movement toward sin.
- Our Lord conquers temptation for His members, as He conquers death by entering death without being conquered by it.
Do not be astonished by temptation, but do not make peace with it. Resist at the gate before suggestion becomes delight and delight becomes consent.
THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE
Justification Requires True Conversion
The Church places this truth before you today: The sinner is not healed by excuse or affirmation, but by grace, repentance, faith, hope, charity, and the turning of the soul toward God. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Catholic mercy restores the sinner to truth; it never names sin as holiness or treats amendment as optional.
The grace to be practiced is Obedient combat under Christ, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice humble confidence by bringing all sins, weakness, needs, and fears to Christ through Mary's intercession without concealment or delay.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist false mercy, which comforts the sinner while leaving the wound unhealed. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing obedient combat under Christ when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Refuse both presumption and despair when conscience exposes sin; repent, seek the appointed remedies, and trust the Mother who leads to Jesus. Invoke Our Lady throughout every temptation and duty, asking her maternal intercession for complete conversion and fidelity to her Son.
The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is Council of Trent.
Your resolution before God: Name the temptation that most often bargains with you. Answer it with Scripture and leave every near occasion today.
Carry this word: Tradition is received life, not mere oldness.
THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR
"Wherefore, if we will have the true understanding of Christ's Gospels, we must study to conform our life to His life as nigh as we can."
Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 1, p. 9
The Gospel is not given only to inform the mind. Grace asks that the life of Christ become visible throughout your conduct today, with particular attention to the virtue shown in the appointed mystery.

It is possible to admire Our Lord while quietly refusing His manner of life. Ask where He is inviting you to become more patient, hidden, truthful, obedient, or forgiving. Conformity begins when admiration accepts a cost.
Today's Practice: Before today's decisions, ask: How does fidelity to Christ govern this?
DAILY EXAMEN
Place your examination and contrition in Mary's hands and ask her to obtain pardon, amendment, and perseverance from Jesus.
- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?
- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?
- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?
PRAYER
O Lord, keep me faithful to what Thy Church received: doctrine, worship, discipline, and holy memory. Preserve me from novelty and from empty nostalgia alike.
DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM
A brief rule to keep every day:
Begin with morning prayer
Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind.
Keep the Angelus
Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation.
Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament
Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Return to Jesus and Mary
Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation.
Pray the Rosary
Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain.
End with night prayer and examen
Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.

Error que resistir: Resist false mercy, which comforts the sinner while leaving the wound unhealed.
VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR
Obedient combat under Christ.
Ponga la virtud en práctica de este modo: Use Scripture as a disciple of the Church, not as private invention.
Ponga la virtud en práctica de este modo: Keep the Lenten fast without bargaining with appetite.
