CITY OF GOD IN EXILE
THE DAILY PILGRIMAGE
"Now therefore, ye children, hear me: Blessed are they that keep my ways." - Proverbs 8:32
"Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. [...] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." - Luke 12:32-34
Palm Sunday
2026-03-29 - Passiontide - Sunday of the First Class - violet
PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY
Passion of Christ: the sufferings and death Jesus freely accepted for our salvation, from His agony in Gethsemane through His Crucifixion.
Gentiles: in this biblical setting, the peoples and nations outside Israel; their call shows that Christ came as Savior for every nation.
Apostolic: belonging to the faith, mission, teaching, or authority handed down from Christ through the apostles.
TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR
Humiliation, opposition, and penance do not mean that God has ceased to govern. Our Lord redeemed the world through His obedient suffering on the Cross. When Catholics accept unavoidable trials without sin, perform penance, and continue obeying the truth, those sufferings can humble pride and deepen fidelity rather than lead to despair. Fix your gaze upon Jesus Christ as the sole Last End of this devotion and ask to be conformed, united, and consecrated to Him. Consecrate yourself to Jesus through Mary and ask that every part of the day increase conformity, union, and belonging to Him.

"All our perfection consists in being conformed, united, and consecrated to Jesus Christ; and therefore the most perfect of all devotions is, without any doubt, that which the most perfectly conforms, unites, and consecrates us to Jesus Christ. Now, Mary being the most conformed of all creatures to Jesus Christ, it follows that, of all devotions, that which most consecrates and conforms the soul to our Lord is devotion to His holy Mother, and that the more a soul is consecrated to Mary, the more is it consecrated to Jesus."
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 120

Jesus Christ is not merely associated with this devotion; He is its measure and end. Christian perfection is conformity, union, and consecration to Him. Mary serves that end because no creature is more perfectly conformed to her divine Son, and her entire maternal action forms His likeness within souls.

St. Louis de Montfort therefore identifies perfect consecration to Jesus with complete consecration through Mary and a perfect renewal of Baptism's vows and promises. Every Marian act must renew renunciation of Satan, sin, worldly maxims, and self-rule while deepening faith, worship, obedience, and total belonging to Christ.

PRACTICE
Read part of the Passion narrative slowly. Ask where enthusiasm for Christ has failed under pressure, and renew your promise to follow Him when fidelity costs you.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"It is not lawful for thee to have her."
St. John the Baptist, Matthew 14:4, Douay-Rheims

ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - March 29
In Persia, the holy martyrs Jonas and Barachisius, under Sapor, king of Persia. Jonas, being pressed in a vice till his bones were broken, was cut in twain; Barachisius was suffocated by burning pitch poured into his throat. — At Heliopolis, near Mount Lebanon, under Julian the Apostate, St. Cyril, deacon and martyr, whose body was opened and his liver plucked out by the Gentiles, who devoured it like wild beasts. — At Nicomedia, the martyrdom of the holy martyrs Pastor, Victorinus and their companions. — In Africa, under the Arian king Genseric, during the persecution of the Vandals, the holy confessors Armogastes, count, Mascula, Archimimus, and Saturus, master of the king's household. Having endured many severe torments, as well as reproaches, for the confession of the truth, they reached the end of their glorious combats. — At Asti, St. Secundus, martyr. — In the monastery of Luxeuil, the decease of the abbot St. Eustasius, a disciple of St. Columbau, who had under his guidance nearly six hundred monks. Eminent in sanctity, he was also renowned for miracles.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
Truly this was the Son of God.
Palm Sunday - Matthew 26:36-75; 27:1-66
"And they that passed by, blasphemed him, wagging their heads."
Take the palm seriously. It is not a decoration but a promise to follow the King who rides toward suffering for love of you.

THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL
What This Gospel Teaches
Palm Sunday places acclaim and abandonment side by side, exposing the weakness of merely human enthusiasm.
The Passion reveals the obedience of Christ, the malice of sin, and the price of redemption.
Error corrected: The fickle discipleship that loves triumphal signs but flees humiliation.
- Where does this error tempt me in practice?
- What act does this Gospel require of me today?

TODAY'S SAINT OR FEAST
Palm Sunday
Hosanna at the gate, the Cross on the road.
Palm Sunday joins the royal entry of Christ into Jerusalem with the long proclamation of His Passion.
The day teaches how quickly human acclaim can fail, and how the King conquers not by worldly triumph but by obedience, humiliation, sacrifice, and the Cross.
Do not stop at the procession. Follow the King where He goes, from acclaim into sacrifice, and let loyalty outlive emotion.
BREVIARY WITNESS
The King proceeds to His Passion.
Matins - Palm Sunday
- The Palm Sunday office joins the procession of Christ the King with the solemn proclamation of His Passion.
- Its witness strips away shallow excitement about visible victory: the true King reigns by obedience unto death, and His disciples must follow beyond the crowd's passing acclaim.
Carry the palm into the Passion. Loyalty to Christ must remain when the road turns from honor to humiliation.
Instruction from the Breviary
The Breviary witness for Palm Sunday is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live.
Today's witness is gathered under The King proceeds to His Passion.. Its first point is this: The Palm Sunday office joins the procession of Christ the King with the solemn proclamation of His Passion. Its next point develops the lesson: Its witness strips away shallow excitement about visible victory: the true King reigns by obedience unto death, and His disciples must follow beyond the crowd's passing acclaim.
The practical instruction is: Carry the palm into the Passion. Loyalty to Christ must remain when the road turns from honor to humiliation. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over.
- What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend?
- What virtue does the Church place before me through it?
- What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson?

FROM MATINS
The King enters to loose the bound.
Matins - Third Nocturn - Palm Sunday
St. Ambrose, Bishop of Milan
"Be thou also such as they, if thou wouldest loose them that are bound."
- The Breviary contemplates Christ drawing near to Jerusalem, while the office already stands under the solemn nearness of His Passion.
- St. Ambrose reads the Mount of Olives, the ass, and the colt as figures of Christ coming to dwell in the hearts of the Gentiles and to gather those once banished by sin.
- The disciples who loose the animals show the apostolic work of freeing the bound for Christ, who is Himself the Door, the Way, and the One to whom worship is given.
Welcome Christ as King without forgetting where His road goes. The palms are not pageantry only; they summon the soul to be loosed for obedience, humility, and the Cross.
THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE
Obedience Serves Truth
The Church places this truth before you today: Catholic obedience is a virtue ordered to God and His truth. It is not servility before contradiction or unlawful command. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Authority is real because it comes from God, but it remains ministerial. It cannot command against the faith it exists to guard.
The grace to be practiced is Loyalty to Christ the King in suffering, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice Christ-centered conformity by submitting intellect, will, passions, body, possessions, relationships, and duties to His rule.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist both rebellion against true authority and false obedience to commands that betray doctrine. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing loyalty to Christ the King in suffering when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Reject every attachment or devotional distortion that resists Christ's likeness, His commandments, His Cross, or His sovereign rights. Make every honor of Our Lady produce deeper Catholic faith, worthy worship, moral obedience, sacrificial charity, and union with Jesus.
The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Thomas Aquinas.
Your resolution before God: Read part of the Passion narrative slowly. Ask where enthusiasm for Christ has failed under pressure, and renew your promise to follow Him when fidelity costs you.
Carry this word: The saints are living teachers of doctrine and virtue.
THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR
"If it be lawful and expedient to speak, speak then of God and of such things as are to the edifying of thy soul or of thy neighbour's."
Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 10, p. 18
Speech is a stewardship. Our Lady's recollection teaches the pilgrim that silence is not emptiness but a guard placed around charity and truth.

Not every true observation must be spoken, and not every fault must be exposed by you. Before speaking, ask whether the words serve God's truth, a real duty, or the good of a soul. If they serve only irritation, curiosity, or the wish to appear discerning, let silence make the sacrifice.
Today's Practice: Omit unnecessary remarks and use the silence to make holy aspirations.
DAILY EXAMEN
Measure the day by conformity and union with Christ, repent of every resistance, and renew complete consecration through Mary.
- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?
- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?
- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?
PRAYER
O Lord, let the saints of this day teach me how doctrine becomes life, how virtue endures trial, and how fidelity resists the errors of its age.
DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM
A brief rule to keep every day:
Begin with morning prayer
Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind.
Keep the Angelus
Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation.
Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament
Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Return to Jesus and Mary
Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation.
Pray the Rosary
Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain.
End with night prayer and examen
Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.

VERDAD DE LA FE
Obedience Serves Truth
Catholic obedience is a virtue ordered to God and His truth. It is not servility before contradiction or unlawful command.
Nota de la Iglesia: Apostolic
Defensor: St. Thomas Aquinas
Defensa católica: Authority is real because it comes from God, but it remains ministerial. It cannot command against the faith it exists to guard.
Error que resistir: Resist both rebellion against true authority and false obedience to commands that betray doctrine.
VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR
Loyalty to Christ the King in suffering.
La virtud de hoy es Loyalty to Christ the King in suffering..
