CITY OF GOD IN EXILE
THE DAILY PILGRIMAGE
"Now therefore, ye children, hear me: Blessed are they that keep my ways." - Proverbs 8:32
"Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. [...] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." - Luke 12:32-34
Wednesday of Holy Week
2026-04-01 - Passiontide - Feria of the First Class - violet
PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY
Passion of Christ: the sufferings and death Jesus freely accepted for our salvation, from His agony in Gethsemane through His Crucifixion.
Penance: repentance expressed through prayer, self-denial, reparation, and a real turning away from sin.
Holy Week: the final week before Easter, when the Church follows Christ from His entrance into Jerusalem through His Passion, death, and burial.
TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR
Humiliation, opposition, and penance do not mean that God has ceased to govern. Our Lord redeemed the world through His obedient suffering on the Cross. When Catholics accept unavoidable trials without sin, perform penance, and continue obeying the truth, those sufferings can humble pride and deepen fidelity rather than lead to despair. Give Jesus Christ through Mary's hands everything that can be given, including the daily satisfactions gained through good works. Give Jesus through Mary's hands the entire day, including all prayer, labor, thought, speech, suffering, rest, and unseen good.

"By this devotion, we give to Jesus Christ, in the most perfect manner, inasmuch as it is by Mary's hands, all we can give Him, and far more than by any other devotions, in which we give Him either part of our time, or a part of our good works, or a part of our satisfactions and mortifications; whereas here everything is given and consecrated to Him, even to the right of disposing of our interior goods, and of the satisfactions which we gain by our good works daily."
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 123

Total consecration differs from devotion confined to portions of time or selected works. By Mary's hands everything is given to Jesus, including the disposition of interior goods and daily satisfactions. Prayer hours cannot remain isolated from work, rest, speech, suffering, relationships, possessions, and the hidden movements of the heart.

This totality does not despise particular devotions; it gathers and orders them within an entire life. The Rosary, Mass, examination, penance, alms, labor, family care, suffering, and recreation belong to Christ. Do not calculate how much remains yours. Ask how every part may serve His glory beneath Mary's direction.

PRACTICE
Read Matthew 26:14-25. Ask what comfort, approval, money, or fear tempts you to compromise fidelity, then reject every concealed consent before the Sacred Triduum begins.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"The beginning of wisdom, the fear of our Lord: and the knowledge of the holy, prudence."
Holy Scripture, Proverbs 9:10, Original Douay-Rheims

ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - April 1
At Rome, the passion of St. Theodora, sister of the illustrious martyr Hermes, who underwent martyrdom in the time of the emperor Adrian, under the judge Aurelian, and was buried by the side of her brother, on the Salarian road, a short distance from the city. — The same day, St. Venantius, bishop and martyr. — In Egypt, the holy martyrs Victor and Stephen. — In Armenia, the holy martyrs Quinctian and Irenaeus. — At Constantinople, under the emperor Leo, St. Macarius, confessor, who ended his life in exile for the defence of the honor paid to sacred images. — At Grenoble, the bishop St. Hugh, who spent many years of his life in solitude, and departed for heaven, with a reputation for miracles. — At Amiens, the abbot St. Valery, whose tomb is made illustrious by frequent miracles.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
What will you give me, and I will deliver him unto you?
Wednesday of Holy Week - Matthew 26:14-25
"Amen I say to you, that one of you is about to betray me."
Ask with the apostles, 'Is it I, Lord?' Do not remain in vague guilt. Name the real compromise, repent of it, and choose the act of fidelity that answers it.

THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL
What This Gospel Teaches
Judas's outward betrayal is preceded by an inward bargain in which money is preferred to fidelity to Christ.
At the supper, Our Lord names the betrayal and gives Judas a final warning. Divine knowledge does not remove human responsibility or make repentance impossible.
The sorrow of the other apostles teaches the soul to examine itself humbly rather than assume that grave infidelity is always another person's danger.
Error corrected: The presumption that a person can protect secret consent to sin without eventually wounding fidelity in outward action.
- Where does this error tempt me in practice?
- What act does this Gospel require of me today?

TODAY'S SAINT OR FEAST
Wednesday of Holy Week
Judas bargains while Our Lord prepares the Pasch.
Wednesday of Holy Week places the betrayal of Judas beside Our Lord's deliberate preparation for the Last Supper and His approaching Passion.
Judas asks what Christ's enemies will give him and accepts thirty pieces of silver. At the table, Our Lord exposes the betrayal without ceasing to offer the traitor a final warning.
Do not study Judas only to condemn him. Let his bargain warn you to name the lesser goods for which you are tempted to disobey Christ, and return to Our Lord before the choice hardens.
BREVIARY WITNESS
The betrayal named before the Passion.
Matins - Wednesday of Holy Week
- The Church reaches the threshold of the Sacred Triduum while the Mass Gospel recounts Judas bargaining for thirty pieces of silver and Our Lord naming the betrayal at supper.
- The lesson warns that outward betrayal is prepared by an inward choice: a creature is preferred to Christ, secrecy protects the choice, and repeated consent hardens the will.
Enter the Sacred Triduum with an honest conscience. Name the compromise that asks you to exchange fidelity for comfort, approval, money, or fear, and reject it before God.
Instruction from the Breviary
The Breviary witness for Wednesday of Holy Week is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live.
Today's witness is gathered under The betrayal named before the Passion.. Its first point is this: The Church reaches the threshold of the Sacred Triduum while the Mass Gospel recounts Judas bargaining for thirty pieces of silver and Our Lord naming the betrayal at supper. Its next point develops the lesson: The lesson warns that outward betrayal is prepared by an inward choice: a creature is preferred to Christ, secrecy protects the choice, and repeated consent hardens the will.
The practical instruction is: Enter the Sacred Triduum with an honest conscience. Name the compromise that asks you to exchange fidelity for comfort, approval, money, or fear, and reject it before God. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over.
- What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend?
- What virtue does the Church place before me through it?
- What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson?

THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE
The Cross Is Daily
The Church places this truth before you today: The disciple of Christ must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Our Lord in obedience, penance, and perseverance. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Holiness is formed in ordinary fidelity before it is tested in public suffering.
The grace to be practiced is Sincere contrition and fidelity before the Passion, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice undivided consecration by refusing to confine Christ's ownership to devotional periods while reclaiming the rest for self.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist a comfortable religion that admires Christ while refusing self-denial. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing sincere contrition and fidelity before the Passion when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Release the right to control the fruits of sacrifice and accept hidden usefulness, unknown beneficiaries, and unrewarded service. Consecrate every hour and every good action without separating sacred practice from ordinary duty, charity, suffering, and rest.
The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Bede the Venerable.
Your resolution before God: Read Matthew 26:14-25. Ask what comfort, approval, money, or fear tempts you to compromise fidelity, then reject every concealed consent before the Sacred Triduum begins.
Carry this word: Grace is guarded by ordinary fidelity.
THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR
"As long as we live in this world we may not be fully without temptation."
Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 13, p. 21
The presence of temptation does not itself prove that you have consented or that prayer has failed. The Christian remains in warfare. Temptation humbles presumption, reveals the need for grace, and gives the will an occasion to prefer God in deed rather than merely in desire.

Do not converse needlessly with the temptation. Call upon Jesus and Mary, leave the occasion when you can, turn the imagination toward something lawful, and perform the nearest duty. If you fall, repent promptly; do not let wounded pride delay your return to mercy.
Today's Practice: Prepare a firm response for today's habitual temptation: an aspiration, departure from the occasion, and prompt return to duty.
DAILY EXAMEN
Examine whether any time, action, satisfaction, possession, or interior good was withheld from Jesus and return it through Mary.
- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?
- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?
- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?
PRAYER
O Lord, strengthen the little duties of this day with Thy grace, that nothing entrusted to me may be wasted through negligence or vanity.
DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM
A brief rule to keep every day:
Begin with morning prayer
Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind.
Keep the Angelus
Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation.
Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament
Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Return to Jesus and Mary
Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation.
Pray the Rosary
Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain.
End with night prayer and examen
Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.

El testimonio de hoy se reúne bajo The betrayal named before the Passion.. Su primer punto es: The Church reaches the threshold of the Sacred Triduum while the Mass Gospel recounts Judas bargaining for thirty pieces of silver and Our Lord naming the betrayal at supper.
La instrucción práctica es: Enter the Sacred Triduum with an honest conscience. Name the compromise that asks you to exchange fidelity for comfort, approval, money, or fear, and reject it before God. Pregunte qué verdad se custodia, qué virtud se alaba y qué peligro u olvido se corrige.

VERDAD DE LA FE
The Cross Is Daily
The disciple of Christ must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Our Lord in obedience, penance, and perseverance.
Nota de la Iglesia: Holy
Defensor: St. Bede the Venerable
Defensa católica: Holiness is formed in ordinary fidelity before it is tested in public suffering.
Error que resistir: Resist a comfortable religion that admires Christ while refusing self-denial.
VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR
Sincere contrition and fidelity before the Passion.
La virtud de hoy es Sincere contrition and fidelity before the Passion..
Ponga la virtud en práctica de este modo: Examine what affection, fear, or advantage most easily competes with fidelity to Christ.
Ponga la virtud en práctica de este modo: Make an honest act of contrition before the Sacred Triduum begins.
O Lord, strengthen the little duties of this day with Thy grace, that nothing entrusted to me may be wasted through negligence or vanity.
