CITY OF GOD IN EXILE THE DAILY PILGRIMAGE "Now therefore, ye children, hear me: Blessed are they that keep my ways." - Proverbs 8:32 "Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. [...] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." - Luke 12:32-34 Monday within the Octave of Easter 2026-04-06 - Eastertide - Double of the First Class within a Privileged Octave of the First Order - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Octave: an eight-day extension of a major feast, allowing the Church to continue praying over the same mystery. Spiritual consolation: encouragement, peace, light, or strength permitted by God in prayer; it is a help toward fidelity, not the purpose of the spiritual life. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Christ is risen, has ascended in His glorified humanity, and reigns in Heaven. The Church and her members still suffer on earth, but their trials do not overturn His victory. Christian hope is therefore more than an encouraging feeling: it trusts Christ's promise of resurrection and eternal life and gives the faithful a reason to persevere in obedience today. Ask to remember and fulfill every engagement of holy Baptism as the necessary remedy for corruption of morals. Ask Our Lady to dispel ignorance and forgetfulness of Baptism and to restore every engagement throughout personal, family, and public life. "The Council of Sens, convoked by order of Louis the Débonnaire to remedy the disorders of Christians, which were then so great, judged that the principal cause of that corruption of morals arose from the oblivion and ignorance in which men lived of the engagements of holy Baptism; and it could think of no better means for remedying so great an evil than to persuade Christians to renew the vows and promises of Baptism." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 128 Moral collapse is not cured by vague inspiration. The Council cited by St. Louis de Montfort traced corruption to ignorance and forgetfulness of baptismal engagements and urged their renewal. When Christians forget whom they have renounced and to whom they belong, doctrine, worship, commandments, and conduct fragment. Apply the remedy completely. Study the Catholic Faith received at Baptism, renew its promises, confess failures, repair scandal, avoid occasions, order the home, fulfill Sunday and sacramental duties, practice prayer and penance, and form dependents in the same allegiance. Renewal restores a whole rule of life under Christ. OCTAVE CONTEXT Within the Privileged Octave of Easter - Privileged Octave of the First Order PRACTICE Make a brief examination of conscience before sleep and end the day with an act of contrition. QUOTE OF THE DAY "And we know that to them that love God, all things cooperate unto good, to such as according to purpose are called to be saints." Holy Scripture, Romans 8:28, Original Douay-Rheims ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - April 6 At Rome, the birthday of blessed Sixtus, pope and martyr, who governed the Church in the time of the emperor Adrian. Under Antoninus Pius, he joyfully endured a corporal death in order to gain Christ. — In Macedonia, the holy martyrs Timothy and Diogenes. — In Persia, one hundred and twenty holy martyrs. — At Ascalon, the holy martyrs Platonides and two others. — At Carthage, St. Marcellin, who was slain by the heretics for defending the Catholic faith. — At Rome, pope St. Celestin, who condemned Nestorius, bishop of Constantinople, and put Pelagius to flight. It was also by his authority, that the holy ecumenical Synod of Ephesus was convoked against Nestorius. — In Ireland, the holy bishop Celsus, who preceded blessed Malachy in the episcopate. — In Denmark, St. William, an abbot renowned for his saintly life and miracles. GOSPEL OF THE DAY Was not our heart burning within us? Monday within the Octave of Easter - Luke 24:13-35 "Was not our heart burning within us, whilst he spoke in the way, and opened to us the scriptures?" Stay on the road with Christ. Let Him interpret the scandal, kindle the heart, and lead the soul back to recognition. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches The risen Christ walks with sorrowing disciples and restores them by opening the Scriptures. Emmaus teaches that consolation must be joined to doctrine, and recognition to the true breaking of bread. Error corrected: The restless discouragement that flees from truth because the road feels dark. - Where does this error tempt me in practice? - What act does this Gospel require of me today? TODAY'S SAINT OR FEAST Monday within the Octave of Easter The risen Lord walks with the sorrowing disciples. Easter Monday keeps the Resurrection before the faithful through the road to Emmaus, where Christ draws near to disciples whose hope has been wounded. Our Lord does not heal them by vague reassurance. He opens the Scriptures, restores their understanding, and lets their hearts burn before their eyes are opened. Walk slowly with the risen Lord today. Let Him teach before He consoles, and let doctrine become the road back to recognition. BREVIARY WITNESS He opened to them the Scriptures. Matins - Monday within the Octave of Easter - The Easter Monday office keeps the Church with the disciples on the road to Emmaus, where the risen Christ interprets the things concerning Himself. - The lesson is not bare consolation. Christ restores the mind by revealed truth before He grants recognition in the breaking of bread. Let Christ correct the way you read suffering. The road out of confusion begins with the Scriptures opened by the risen Lord. Instruction from the Breviary The Breviary witness for Monday within the Octave of Easter is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live. Today's witness is gathered under He opened to them the Scriptures.. Its first point is this: The Easter Monday office keeps the Church with the disciples on the road to Emmaus, where the risen Christ interprets the things concerning Himself. Its next point develops the lesson: The lesson is not bare consolation. Christ restores the mind by revealed truth before He grants recognition in the breaking of bread. The practical instruction is: Let Christ correct the way you read suffering. The road out of confusion begins with the Scriptures opened by the risen Lord. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over. - What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend? - What virtue does the Church place before me through it? - What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson? THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Church Is Visible and Founded by Christ The Church places this truth before you today: The true Church is not an invisible collection of private opinions, but the society founded by Our Lord, teaching, sanctifying, and governing in His name. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Apostolicity guards continuity of doctrine, worship, mission, and authority. The faithful do not invent the Church; they receive her from Christ through the Apostles. The grace to be practiced is Docility to the risen Christ, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice informed fidelity by learning, remembering, professing, and obeying the complete obligations that flow from holy Baptism. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist the claim that a self-made religious fellowship can replace the Church Christ visibly founded. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing docility to the risen Christ when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept instruction, correction, confession, restitution, discipline, and reform wherever forgotten baptismal duties have permitted disorder. Remedy moral disorder through doctrine, worship, commandments, prayer, penance, sacramental life, family formation, and faithful example. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Robert Bellarmine. Your resolution before God: Make a brief examination of conscience before sleep and end the day with an act of contrition. Carry this word: The pilgrim is formed by returning to God again and again. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Learn now to die to the world, that thou mayest then live with Christ." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 23, p. 41 Christian death to self is not despair but preparation for life with Christ. Refuse the command of every attachment that draws you from God's will, beginning with the strongest. The world tells you to preserve every comfort and construct an identity from passing things. Christ teaches you to travel lightly toward eternity. You need not despise God's gifts; receive them gratefully, but practice being able to surrender them when His will, charity, or duty requires it. Today's Practice: Accept unnoticed sacrifices without seeking relief or recognition. DAILY EXAMEN Examine whether ignorance or forgetfulness excused any disorder, then identify and restore every neglected baptismal engagement. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, pardon my faults, raise my heart from discouragement, and teach me to begin again under Thy mercy. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. SANTO O FIESTA DE HOY Monday within the Octave of Easter The risen Lord walks with the sorrowing disciples. TESTIMONIO DEL BREVIARIO He opened to them the Scriptures. El testimonio de hoy se reúne bajo He opened to them the Scriptures.. Su primer punto es: The Easter Monday office keeps the Church with the disciples on the road to Emmaus, where the risen Christ interprets the things concerning Himself. La instrucción práctica es: Let Christ correct the way you read suffering. The road out of confusion begins with the Scriptures opened by the risen Lord. VERDAD DE LA FE The Church Is Visible and Founded by Christ The true Church is not an invisible collection of private opinions, but the society founded by Our Lord, teaching, sanctifying, and governing in His name. Nota de la Iglesia: Apostolic Defensor: St. Robert Bellarmine Defensa católica: Apostolicity guards continuity of doctrine, worship, mission, and authority. The faithful do not invent the Church; they receive her from Christ through the Apostles. Error que resistir: Resist the claim that a self-made religious fellowship can replace the Church Christ visibly founded. VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR Docility to the risen Christ. Ponga la virtud en práctica de este modo: Bring confusion to Christ without leaving the road of faith. ORACIÓN O Lord, pardon my faults, raise my heart from discouragement, and teach me to begin again under Thy mercy. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
