CITY OF GOD IN EXILE
THE DAILY PILGRIMAGE
"Now therefore, ye children, hear me: Blessed are they that keep my ways." - Proverbs 8:32
"Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. [...] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." - Luke 12:32-34

PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY
Octave: an eight-day extension of a major feast, allowing the Church to continue praying over the same mystery.
Passion of Christ: the sufferings and death Jesus freely accepted for our salvation, from His agony in Gethsemane through His Crucifixion.
TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR
Christ is risen, has ascended in His glorified humanity, and reigns in Heaven. The Church and her members still suffer on earth, but their trials do not overturn His victory. Christian hope is therefore more than an encouraging feeling: it trusts Christ's promise of resurrection and eternal life and gives the faithful a reason to persevere in obedience today. Receive the Catechism of the Council of Trent's reminder that the baptized are bound and consecrated perpetually to Jesus Christ. Remember that you are perpetually bound and consecrated to Jesus Christ, and offer every faculty and duty to your Redeemer and Lord.

"The Catechism of the Council of Trent, the faithful interpreter of that holy Council, exhorts the parish-priests to do the same thing; and to induce the people to remember themselves, and to believe that they are bound and consecrated to our Lord Jesus Christ, as slaves to their Redeemer and Lord."
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 129

Baptism establishes objective belonging, not a temporary spiritual preference. The Roman Catechism teaches the faithful to remember that they are bound and consecrated perpetually to Jesus Christ, their Redeemer and Lord. Redemption creates a just claim upon the whole person and a joyful debt of worship, obedience, gratitude, and love.

The language of slavery here opposes the cruel slavery of Satan with voluntary, loving dependence upon Christ. It never licenses human domination, abuse, or neglect of justice. Jesus is the divine Redeemer who purchased freedom from sin; belonging to Him orders every human authority and relationship beneath truth, charity, and His commandments.

PRACTICE
Ask where you may be excusing error because it appears gentle, modest, familiar, or socially peaceful.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Take ye great heed of false Prophets, which come to you in the clothing of sheep, but inwardly are ravening wolves."
Holy Scripture, Matthew 7:15, Original Douay-Rheims

ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - April 7
In Africa, the birthday of the holy martyrs Epiphanius, bishop, Donatus, Rufinus, and thirteen others. — At Sinope, in Pontus, two hundred holy martyrs. — In Cilicia, under the prefect Maximian, St. Calliopius, martyr. After undergoing other torments, he was fastened to a cross with his head downward, and gained the noble crown of martyrdom. — At Nicomedia, St. Cyriacus and ten other martyrs. — At Alexandria, St. Peleusius, priest and martyr. — At Rome, St. Hegesippus, who lived near the time of the Apostles. He came to Rome whilst Anicetus was Sovereign Pontiff, and remained till the accession of Eleutherius. He wrote the history of the Church in a simple style, from the Passion of our Lord to his own time, and delineated in his narrative the character of those whose lives he imitated. — At Verona, St. Saturninus, bishop and confessor. — In Syria, in the time of Yalens, St. Aphraates, an anchoret, who defended the Catholic faith against the Arians by the power of miracles.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
Peace be to you.
Tuesday within the Octave of Easter - Luke 24:36-47
"Peace be to you; it is I, fear not."
Let Our Lord speak peace into the place where fear gathers. His wounds are not defeat; they are the signs by which Easter becomes certain.

THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL
What This Gospel Teaches
The risen Lord stands among His disciples, shows His wounds, and gives peace stronger than fear.
He opens their understanding so that the Passion and Resurrection are seen as one saving mystery.
Error corrected: The shallow peace that avoids the Cross instead of receiving victory through it.
- Where does this error tempt me in practice?
- What act does this Gospel require of me today?

TODAY'S SAINT OR FEAST
Tuesday within the Octave of Easter
Peace from the risen Christ to His gathered disciples.
Easter Tuesday contemplates the risen Lord standing in the midst of His disciples, giving peace, showing His wounds, and strengthening them against fear.
The Resurrection does not erase the Passion; Christ's wounds remain the signs of victory, mercy, and the peace He gives to His Church.
Stand with the disciples and let Our Lord speak first. His peace is stronger than fear because it comes from the wounds by which He conquered.
BREVIARY WITNESS
Peace be to you.
Matins - Tuesday within the Octave of Easter
- The Easter Tuesday office contemplates Christ appearing among His disciples, giving peace, showing His wounds, and opening their understanding.
- The risen Lord strengthens His own not by removing the memory of the Passion, but by revealing the Passion as victory fulfilled.
Receive peace from the wounded and risen Christ. Catholic peace is not forgetfulness of the Cross, but confidence that the Cross has conquered.
Instruction from the Breviary
The Breviary witness for Tuesday within the Octave of Easter is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live.
Today's witness is gathered under Peace be to you.. Its first point is this: The Easter Tuesday office contemplates Christ appearing among His disciples, giving peace, showing His wounds, and opening their understanding. Its next point develops the lesson: The risen Lord strengthens His own not by removing the memory of the Passion, but by revealing the Passion as victory fulfilled.
The practical instruction is: Receive peace from the wounded and risen Christ. Catholic peace is not forgetfulness of the Cross, but confidence that the Cross has conquered. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over.
- What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend?
- What virtue does the Church place before me through it?
- What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson?

THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE
The Four Marks Are Not Decorative
The Church places this truth before you today: The Church must be one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic because she bears the identity Christ gave her, not because men assign those titles by preference. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The marks are tests of recognition. They prevent the faithful from confusing religious intensity, social size, antiquarian taste, or institutional claims with the true Church.
The grace to be practiced is Resurrection peace, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice grateful dependence by obeying Christ's doctrine, worship, commandments, Providence, and rightful order throughout the whole life.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist treating the marks as poetic language detached from visible doctrine, worship, and apostolic continuity. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing resurrection peace when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Surrender the illusion of spiritual independence whenever preference, appetite, pride, or worldly opinion resists the Redeemer's claim. Use freedom as Christ's possession: reject sin, fulfill justice, honor obligations, serve souls, and submit every choice to His sovereignty.
The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is St. Robert Bellarmine.
Your resolution before God: Ask where you may be excusing error because it appears gentle, modest, familiar, or socially peaceful.
Carry this word: Be not deceived is a daily rule, not a rare warning.
THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR
"Then shall a good clean conscience make us more gladsome and merry than the cunning of all philosophy."
Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 24, p. 44
At judgment, appearances will fall away and the soul will stand in truth before God. Learning, reputation, and skill have their proper uses, but none can replace a conscience purified by repentance and kept faithful through obedience.

Do not seek peace by avoiding examination. Ask the Holy Ghost to show you every matter that remains unsettled: sins requiring confession, injuries requiring forgiveness, restitution that can be made, or duties repeatedly postponed. A clean conscience is not sinlessness claimed by pride; it is the peace of a soul that refuses concealment and returns to grace.
Today's Practice: Settle every matter of conscience that can rightly be settled today, and prepare definitely to bring the rest to Confession.
DAILY EXAMEN
Examine whether the day reflected perpetual consecration to the Redeemer or practical independence from His rights and commands.
- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?
- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?
- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?
PRAYER
O Lord, preserve me from fair appearances that hide error. Teach me to love truth more than comfort, approval, or the peace that leaves souls wounded.
DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM
A brief rule to keep every day:
Begin with morning prayer
Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind.
Keep the Angelus
Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation.
Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament
Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Return to Jesus and Mary
Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation.
Pray the Rosary
Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain.
End with night prayer and examen
Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.

Instrucción del Breviario
El testimonio del Breviario para Tuesday within the Octave of Easter forma parte de la enseñanza diaria de la Iglesia. VERDAD DE LA FE
The Four Marks Are Not Decorative
The Church must be one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic because she bears the identity Christ gave her, not because men assign those titles by preference.
Nota de la Iglesia: One
Defensor: St. Robert Bellarmine
Defensa católica: The marks are tests of recognition. They prevent the faithful from confusing religious intensity, social size, antiquarian taste, or institutional claims with the true Church.
Error que resistir: Resist treating the marks as poetic language detached from visible doctrine, worship, and apostolic continuity.
VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR
Resurrection peace.
Ponga la virtud en práctica de este modo: Let fear be corrected by faith in the Resurrection.
