CITY OF GOD IN EXILE THE DAILY PILGRIMAGE "Now therefore, ye children, hear me: Blessed are they that keep my ways." - Proverbs 8:32 "Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. [...] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." - Luke 12:32-34 Fifth Sunday after Easter 2026-05-10 - Eastertide - Semi-Double Sunday - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Fifth Sunday after Easter is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves St. Antoninus, Bishop and Confessor on this date. The secondary saint panel below comes from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Ascension: Christ's return to the Father in His glorified humanity forty days after the Resurrection. Tract: in a source title, a written commentary or treatise; in the Mass, the same word can name a solemn chant sung in place of the Alleluia during penitential seasons. Commemoration: a shorter liturgical remembrance of another saint or observance occurring on the same day. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Christ is risen, has ascended in His glorified humanity, and reigns in Heaven. The Church and her members still suffer on earth, but their trials do not overturn His victory. Christian hope is therefore more than an encouraging feeling: it trusts Christ's promise of resurrection and eternal life and gives the faithful a reason to persevere in obedience today. Approach the Mother by contemplating the Divine Son whose glory explains every grace in her. Ponder the mysteries of the Rosary and ask Mary to teach you the mind and dispositions of Jesus within them. "If you wish to comprehend the Mother … comprehend the Son; for she is the worthy Mother of God." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 12 Our Lady cannot be understood as an isolated religious figure. Her dignity comes from the mystery of Jesus Christ, true God and true man, whom she conceived, bore, nourished, and followed to the Cross. Every title rightly given to Mary protects or illuminates some truth about her Divine Son and His work of redemption. Let today's Rosary become Christological contemplation. In its mysteries, look with Mary at Jesus. Notice what He does, what He suffers, what He commands, and what response He asks from you. The Mother is best honored when the soul receives the Son more faithfully. PRACTICE Name your spiritual and temporal needs. Ask the Father for them through Christ, placing every temporal need beneath God's will and eternal salvation. QUOTE OF THE DAY "He can no longer have God for his Father, who has not the Church for his mother." St. Cyprian of Carthage, On the Unity of the Church, Chapter 6 ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - May 10 T.. ANTONINUS, confessor and archbishop of Florence, whose birthday is the 2d of May. — At Rome, on the Latin road, the birthday of the holy martyrs Gordian and Epimachus. In the time of Julian the Apostate, the former was a long time scourged and finally decapitated for confessing the name of Christ. He was buried at nigth by the Christians, in a crypt to which, shortly before, the remains of the blessed martyr Epimachus had been translated from Alexandria, where he had been martyred for the faith of Christ. — In the land of Hus, the holy prophet Job, a man of wonderful patience. — At Rome, the blessed priest and martyr Calepodius, who was killed with the sword, by order of the emperor Alexander. His body was dragged through the city and thrown into the Tiber. It was afterwards found and buried by Pope Callistus. The consul Palmatius was also beheaded with his wife, his sons, and forty-two of both sexes belonging to his household; likewise, the senator Simplicius with his wife, and sixty-eight of his house; Felix also with his wife Blanda. The heads of all these martyrs were exposed over different gates of the city, to terrify the Christians. — Also, at Rome, on the Latin way, the birthday of the holy martyrs Quartus and Quinctus, whose bodies were translated to Capua. — At Lentini, in Sicily, the holy martyrs Alphius, Philadelpus, and Cyrinus. — At Smyrna, St. Dioscorides, martyr. — At Bologna, blessed Nicholas Albergati, a Carthusian monk, bishop of that city, and Cardinal of the holy Eoman Church, celebrated for his holiness and Legations Apostolic. His body was buried at Florence, in the monastery of the Carthusians. — At Taranto, St. Cataldus, a bishop renowned for miracles. — At Milan, the finding of the bodies of the holy martyrs Nazarius and Celsus. The blessed bishop Ambrose found the body of St. Nazarius covered with blood still fresh, which he translated to the basilica of the Apostles, together with the body of the blessed boy Celsus, whom Nazarius had brought up, and whom Anolinus, in the persecution of Nero, had ordered to be struck with the sword on the 28th of July, the day when their martyrdom is commemorated. — At Madrid, St. Isidore, a laborer. Being renowned for miracles, pope Gregory XV. placed him in the number of the Saints at the same time with St. Ignatius, St. Francis, St. Theresa, and St. Philip. GOSPEL OF THE DAY Ask, and you shall receive. Fifth Sunday after Easter - John 16:23-30 "Ask, and you shall receive; that your joy may be full." Ask simply. A child does not improve his petition by mistrusting his father; he asks, waits, and stays near. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches Christ commands confident prayer in His Name. The faithful ask not as strangers but as souls loved by the Father. Error corrected: The prayerlessness that acts as though grace were not needed. - Where does this error tempt me in practice? - What act does this Gospel require of me today? TODAY'S SAINT OR FEAST Fifth Sunday after Easter Ask the Father in the Name of the Son. The Fifth Sunday after Easter prepares the faithful for the Rogation days and the Ascension by teaching prayer in the Name of Christ. Our Lord promises that the Father hears those who ask in His Name, but this prayer is not magic or presumption: it is filial confidence joined to faith, obedience, and desire for God's will. Pray as one belonging to Christ. Exile teaches need, and need should become confident petition through the Son to the Father. SECONDARY SAINT ASSIGNED TO THIS DATE St. Antoninus Bishop and confessor, shepherd of moral clarity. St. Antoninus of Florence is honored as bishop and confessor, remembered for pastoral wisdom, moral teaching, and care for souls. His feast teaches that conscience must be formed, not merely soothed. A shepherd helps souls by naming duties clearly, guarding justice, teaching penance, and applying mercy without confusion. Ask St. Antoninus for a conscience that can be taught. Mercy becomes safer when truth lights the road. BREVIARY WITNESS Petition in the Name of Christ. Matins - Fifth Sunday after Easter - The office of the Fifth Sunday after Easter prepares the faithful for Rogation prayer by placing before them Our Lord's promise concerning prayer in His Name. - Its witness teaches filial confidence: the Christian asks the Father through the Son, not as one bargaining with God, but as one converted, dependent, and obedient. Let need become prayer instead of anxiety. Ask in the Name of Christ, and let petition draw the soul into deeper obedience. Instruction from the Breviary The Breviary witness for Fifth Sunday after Easter is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live. Today's witness is gathered under Petition in the Name of Christ.. Its first point is this: The office of the Fifth Sunday after Easter prepares the faithful for Rogation prayer by placing before them Our Lord's promise concerning prayer in His Name. Its next point develops the lesson: Its witness teaches filial confidence: the Christian asks the Father through the Son, not as one bargaining with God, but as one converted, dependent, and obedient. The practical instruction is: Let need become prayer instead of anxiety. Ask in the Name of Christ, and let petition draw the soul into deeper obedience. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over. - What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend? - What virtue does the Church place before me through it? - What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson? FROM MATINS To ask in the Name of Christ. Matins - Third Nocturn - Fifth Sunday after Easter St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo "Whatsoever is asked, which tendeth not to salvation, is not asked in the Name of the Saviour." - The Breviary prepares the Rogation days with Our Lord's promise that whatever is asked of the Father in His Name will be given. - St. Augustine teaches that asking in Christ's Name is not the mere sound of sacred syllables, but asking according to the true Christ and toward eternal salvation. - The fullness of joy promised by Christ is spiritual and heavenly; compared with that blessed life, all lesser things are as nothing. Let Rogation prayer become purified prayer. Ask boldly, but ask as a Catholic: for grace, salvation, holiness, and every temporal need only under the rule of eternal life. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Outside the Church There Is No Salvation The Church places this truth before you today: All salvation comes through Christ and His Church; no soul is saved by false religion, indifferentism, or separation loved as separation. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The doctrine does not deny God's mercy. It denies that error, schism, or religious indifference can be treated as paths equal to the Church founded by Christ. The grace to be practiced is Filial prayer in the Name of Jesus, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice faith by receiving the mystery as revealed truth before seeking consolation from it. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist indifferentism, which treats contradictory religions as though they were equally pleasing to God. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing filial prayer in the Name of Jesus when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. When the mystery exceeds understanding, remain obedient to what God has revealed instead of making private judgment the measure of truth. Return once during work to the chosen mystery and unite the duty to an action of Our Lord within it. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is Pope Pius IX. Your resolution before God: Name your spiritual and temporal needs. Ask the Father for them through Christ, placing every temporal need beneath God's will and eternal salvation. Carry this word: Prayer in Christ's Name seeks what leads the soul toward God and eternal life. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Thou alone art the true refection of the soul, and he that worthily eateth Thee shall be partaker and heir of eternal glory." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book IV, chapter 14, p. 203 The Blessed Sacrament is not one devotion among many: it is Jesus Christ, the soul's true food. Let every Marian offering lead you more faithfully to her Eucharistic Son. If you can assist at Mass and receive worthily, approach with recollection and hunger rather than habit. If you cannot, do not allow absence to become forgetfulness. Turn toward the tabernacle, confess your desire, and ask Our Lady to prepare in you a more faithful welcome for Jesus. Today's Practice: Make a reverent Spiritual Communion, or prepare carefully for Holy Communion if you will receive today. DAILY EXAMEN Ask whether today's devotion left you more attentive to Christ's word, sacrifice, and commandments. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Father, teach me to ask through Thy Son with confidence, humility, and submission to Thy will. Purify my desires so that my petitions may serve salvation. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. It denies that error, schism, or religious indifference can be treated as paths equal to the Church founded by Christ. Error que resistir: Resist indifferentism, which treats contradictory religions as though they were equally pleasing to God. VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR Filial prayer in the Name of Jesus. La virtud de hoy es Filial prayer in the Name of Jesus.. ORACIÓN O Father, teach me to ask through Thy Son with confidence, humility, and submission to Thy will. Purify my desires so that my petitions may serve salvation. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
