[...] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." - Luke 12:32-34 Sunday after the Ascension 2026-05-17 - Eastertide - Semi-Double Sunday - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Sunday after the Ascension is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves St. Pascal Baylon, Confessor on this date. The secondary saint panel below comes from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Ascension: Christ's return to the Father in His glorified humanity forty days after the Resurrection. Tract: in a source title, a written commentary or treatise; in the Mass, the same word can name a solemn chant sung in place of the Alleluia during penitential seasons. Confessor: in the traditional calendar, a male saint who openly professed the Faith by a holy life but was not killed as a martyr. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Christ is risen, has ascended in His glorified humanity, and reigns in Heaven. The Church and her members still suffer on earth, but their trials do not overturn His victory. Christian hope is therefore more than an encouraging feeling: it trusts Christ's promise of resurrection and eternal life and gives the faithful a reason to persevere in obedience today. Stand with Our Lady at the Visitation and Cana, where her intercession serves the saving work of Christ. Entrust the needs of souls and households to Our Lady, asking her to present them to Jesus according to His will. "If we examine narrowly the rest of our Blessed Lord's Life, we shall see that it was His Will to begin His miracles by Mary." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 19 St. John was sanctified at the sound of Mary's greeting because Jesus was present within her; Cana received wine because she presented the need and commanded obedience to her Son. Her intercession never competes with Christ's power. It disposes servants to hear Him: whatsoever He shall say to you, do ye. Bring real needs to Our Lady, including conversion, perseverance, sickness, family trials, and the souls who have no one to pray for them. Then accept her direction at Cana. Petition must be joined to obedience, and confidence must not become an excuse for retaining sin. Our Lord promises the Paraclete and warns of persecution, teaching that Catholic witness must be truthful, patient, and strengthened from above, not built on human approval. Live this interval faithfully. Christ has ascended, but He has not abandoned His Church; witness must wait upon the Paraclete. St. Pascal Baylon is honored as a confessor whose life was marked by humility, poverty, prayer, and special devotion to the Most Blessed Sacrament. His feast teaches that Eucharistic love is not vague warmth. It becomes reverence, recollection, purity, service, and a heart that knows how to adore. Ask St. Pascal for a heart that knows how to adore. Reverence begins when the soul remembers Who is before it. BREVIARY WITNESS The Paraclete shall give testimony. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. Matins - Third Nocturn - Sunday after the Ascension St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo "The Spirit of truth... shall testify of Me." - The Breviary keeps the Church between Ascension and Pentecost, hearing Christ promise the Comforter and warn His disciples of persecution. - St. Augustine teaches that the world which hates Christ also persecutes His holy ones, yet the disciples are what they are by the grace of God. - The Spirit of truth gives irrefragable testimony to Christ and converts even some who had seen and hated, drawing them into the faith that worketh by love. Wait for Pentecost without softness. The Ascended Lord does not hide the world's hatred, but promises the Spirit of truth so that witness may remain clear, charitable, and unconquered. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Modernism Is the Synthesis of Heresies The Church places this truth before you today: Modernism corrodes the faith from within by subjecting revelation, dogma, worship, and authority to religious experience and historical change. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Catholic answer is not panic but firm adherence to objective revelation, defined dogma, apostolic tradition, and the anti-modernist judgments of the Church. The grace to be practiced is Patient witness under the Holy Ghost, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice obedient confidence: ask generously, obey completely, and leave the manner and hour of the answer to Christ. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist the language of continuity when it is used to smuggle contradiction into Catholic words. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing patient witness under the Holy Ghost when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. When the answer is delayed or differs from your expectation, remain beside Mary and continue doing what her Son commands. Offer your Rosary, prayers, sacrifices, and duties for the intentions entrusted to you and for neglected souls in greatest need. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is Pope St. Pius X. Your resolution before God: Read John 15:26-16:4. Ask for grace to state necessary truths calmly, without fear or hostility. Carry this word: Christ prepares His witnesses for opposition and promises the Holy Ghost to strengthen them. Test what you hear by revelation and the perennial teaching of the Church. Yet Thomas à Kempis also rebukes the curiosity that collects authorities without receiving their doctrine. Listen for the truth God is giving through a trustworthy witness, and then permit that truth to correct you. A holy author's name should not become decoration around an unchanged life. Today's Practice: Reject claims based on novelty or popularity and ask what the Church has always taught. DAILY EXAMEN Thank Jesus for every grace, visible or hidden, and ask whether your petitions were accompanied by faithful obedience. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord Jesus Christ, keep me from surprise or bitterness when truth is opposed. Grant me patient courage while I await and obey the Spirit of truth. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
