CITY OF GOD IN EXILE THE DAILY PILGRIMAGE "Now therefore, ye children, hear me: Blessed are they that keep my ways." - Proverbs 8:32 "Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. [...] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." - Luke 12:32-34 Feria in Time after Pentecost 2026-06-01 - Time after Pentecost - Feria - green PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Feria: a weekday without a higher feast of its own; its prayers usually follow the current liturgical season. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR This feria is a weekday without a feast of higher rank. It teaches that the grace of Pentecost must enter ordinary duties: the Holy Ghost forms fidelity not only in great public acts, but in prayer, work, truthful speech, and obedience when no solemn celebration carries the day. Ask the Holy Ghost to strike deep within you the roots of every virtue He formed so perfectly in His faithful Spouse. Ask the Holy Ghost through Our Lady for the increase of every theological, moral, and necessary particular virtue. "Strike the roots, My Well-beloved and My Spouse, of all your virtues in My elect, in order that they may grow from virtue to virtue, and from grace to grace." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 34 The Holy Ghost forms no shallow or selective holiness. St. Louis de Montfort names Mary's faith, humility, universal mortification, sublime prayer, ardent charity, firm hope, and other virtues as living roots to be planted in the elect. Devotion that excuses a ruling vice or neglects duty has resisted her formation. Roots grow beneath the surface through repeated fidelity. Seek all the virtues required by your state and present defects honestly to grace. Let faith govern judgment, hope prevent discouragement, charity animate obedience, humility welcome correction, mortification restrain appetite, prudence choose the means, and perseverance carry the work to completion. PRACTICE Perform your ordinary duties promptly as deliberate acts of obedience to God. QUOTE OF THE DAY "Let the wise man display his wisdom, not by [mere] words, but through good deeds." St. Clement of Rome, First Epistle to the Corinthians, Chapter 38 ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - June 1 At KOME, St. Juventius, martyr. — At Caesarea, in Palestine, blessed Pamphilus, priest and martyr, a man of remarkable sanctity and learning, and great charity to the poor. In the persecution of Galerius Maximian, he was tortured for the faith of Christ, under the governor Urbanus, and thrown into prison; then, being again subjected to torments under Firmilian, he consummated his martyrdom with others. With them suffered also Valens, deacon, and Paul, and nine others, whose commemoration occurs on other days. — At Autun, the Saints Reverian, bishop, and Paul, priest, with ten others, who were crowned with martyrdom under the emperor Aurelian. — In Cappadocia, in the time of the emperor Alexander and the prefect Simplicius, the holy martyr Thespesius, who, after undergoing many torments, was beheaded. — In Egypt, under the emperor Diocletian, the holy martyrs Ischyrion, military officer, and five other soldiers, who were put to death in different manners for the faith of Christ. — Also, St. Firmus, martyr, who was scourged most severely, struck with stones, and finally decapitated during the persecution of Maximian. — At Perugia, the holy martyrs Felinus and Gratinian, soldiers under Decius, who were variously tortured, and thus by a glorious death won the palm of martyrdom. — At Bologna, St. Proculus, martyr, who suffered under the emperor Maximian. — At Amelia, in the reign of Diocletian, St. Secundus, martyr, who consummated his martyrdom by being thrown into the Tiber. — At Citta-di-Castello, in Umbria, St. Crescentian, a Eoman soldier, crowned with martyrdom under the same emperor. — In Umbria, St. Fortunatus, a priest renowned for virtues and miracles. — In the monastery of Lerins, the abbot St. Caprasius. — At Treves, St. Simeon, monk, who was added to the number of the Saints by pope Benedict IX. — At Burgos, in Spain, in the monastery of Onia, St. Eneco, Benedictine abbot, illustrious by his sanctity and miracles. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Revelation Was Entrusted to the Church The Church places this truth before you today: Sacred Scripture and Apostolic Tradition are received within the Church, whose divinely assisted teaching office guards the deposit of faith. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Private reading must remain subject to the faith once delivered, because the Scriptures belong to the Church that received, preserved, and interprets them. The grace to be practiced is Faithful obedience to the grace of the present day, drawn from the daily rule of fidelity. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice the whole order of virtue throughout the day, giving special vigilance to the defects that most frequently oppose grace. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist private judgment when it sets itself above the Church's received doctrine. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing faithful obedience to the grace of the present day when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept sustained discipline, hidden repetition, and slow growth without replacing real virtue with passing fervor or token sacrifice. Fulfill all prayers, duties, penances, acts of charity, and occasions of witness with faith, hope, charity, prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Irenaeus. Your resolution before God: Perform your ordinary duties promptly as deliberate acts of obedience to God. Carry this word: The fire of Pentecost must govern the ordinary day. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Regard not much who is with thee, nor who is against thee, but be this thy greatest study, that God may be with thee." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book II, chapter 2, p. 55 Human approval is a poor compass. With Mary, seek first to be faithful to Jesus Christ and His Church, whether praise follows or not. The desire to be supported can subtly alter judgment before you notice it. It softens a necessary word, delays a duty, or makes loneliness appear to be proof that fidelity was mistaken. Examine the act by Catholic truth and your real obligations; then leave the company or opposition of men in God's hands. Today's Practice: Perform right acts without checking whether anyone noticed. DAILY EXAMEN Examine the roots and fruits of the day, thanking God for growth and naming every vice that must be confessed, uprooted, and opposed tomorrow. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Holy Ghost, make the grace of Pentecost fruitful in the duties before me. Keep my faith exact, my charity patient, and my obedience prompt when the day seems ordinary. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. VERDAD DE LA FE Revelation Was Entrusted to the Church Sacred Scripture and Apostolic Tradition are received within the Church, whose divinely assisted teaching office guards the deposit of faith. Nota de la Iglesia: Apostolic Defensor: St. Irenaeus Defensa católica: Private reading must remain subject to the faith once delivered, because the Scriptures belong to the Church that received, preserved, and interprets them. Error que resistir: Resist private judgment when it sets itself above the Church's received doctrine. ORACIÓN O Holy Ghost, make the grace of Pentecost fruitful in the duties before me. Keep my faith exact, my charity patient, and my obedience prompt when the day seems ordinary. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
