CITY OF GOD IN EXILE THE DAILY PILGRIMAGE "Now therefore, ye children, hear me: Blessed are they that keep my ways." - Proverbs 8:32 "Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. [...] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." - Luke 12:32-34 Sunday within the Octave of Corpus Christi 2026-06-07 - Time after Pentecost - Greater Double - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Octave: an eight-day extension of a major feast, allowing the Church to continue praying over the same mystery. Corpus Christi: the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, celebrating His true presence in the Holy Eucharist. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR In the parable of the great supper, invited guests prefer possessions, business, and domestic concerns to the host's call. Heard within the Corpus Christi octave, the warning is exact: earthly duties are real, but none may become a respectable excuse for neglecting God's banquet and the worship He commands. Ask for a true and entire devotion to Our Lady that produces fidelity to Christ rather than presumption about salvation. Ask Our Lady for devotion that is true in doctrine, entire in self-gift, fruitful in virtue, and persevering unto death. "It is an infallible mark of reprobation to have no esteem and love for the holy Virgin; while on the other hand it is an infallible mark of predestination to be entirely and truly devoted to her." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 40 St. Louis de Montfort presents contempt for the Mother of God as a terrible sign and true devotion as a sign of predestination. A sign is not permission to presume. No formula, title, medal, or practice makes deliberate mortal sin safe; neither may a sinner despair, for grace calls him to repentance and a genuine return to Jesus through Mary. The decisive words are entirely and truly. True devotion honors what Mary honors: her divine Son, His Catholic Faith, His commandments, His Sacrifice, His sacraments, His Cross, and the souls He redeemed. Entire devotion reaches conduct, possessions, reputation, suffering, duties, and final perseverance. OCTAVE CONTEXT Within the Privileged Octave of Corpus Christi - Privileged Octave of the Second Order PRACTICE Read Luke 14:16-24 and remove the concrete excuses that have weakened prayer, worship, or Eucharistic hunger. QUOTE OF THE DAY "I answer, the reason for loving God is God Himself; and the measure of love due to Him is immeasurable love." St. Bernard of Clairvaux, The Book of Saint Bernard on the Love of God, Chapter 1 NOVENA IN PROGRESS Novena to the Sacred Heart - Day 5 of 9 Preparing for Most Sacred Heart of Jesus on 2026-06-12. PETITION Ask for reparation, meekness, humility, perseverance, and love that answers coldness toward Our Lord. A FAITHFUL ACT Offer the day's prayers, sacrifices, and duties in reparation for sacrilege, indifference, false worship, and coldness toward the Sacred Heart. ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - June 7 At Constantinople, the birthday of St. Paul, bishop - of that city. For the Catholic faith, he was often expelled from his see by the Arians, and restored to it by the Roman Pontiff, St. Julius. Finally, the Arian emperor Constantius banished him to Cucusum, a small town of Cappadocia, where, by the machinations of the Arians, he was barbarously strangled, and thus departed for the heavenly kingdom. His body was conveyed to Constantinople with the greatest honor, in the reign of emperor Theodosius. — In Egypt, St. Licarion, martyr, who was lacerated, scourged with heated iron rods, and, after other horrible torments, was crowned with martyrdom by a stroke from the sword. — At Cordova, the holy martyrs Peter, priest, Wallabonsus, deacon, Sabinian, Wistremundus, Habentius, and Jeremias, monks. — In England, the abbot St. Kobert, of the Order of Citeaux. GOSPEL OF THE DAY Come, for now all things are ready. Sunday within the Octave of Corpus Christi - Luke 14:16-24 "Come, for now all things are ready." Notice your excuses gently but honestly. The Host is generous, and the saddest thing is to miss the feast because lesser things felt urgent. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches The excuses of the invited show how easily earthly goods become obstacles to the banquet of God. The poor, weak, and outcast are brought in by mercy, but no one enters by contempt for the invitation. Error corrected: The respectable excuse that refuses God without openly hating Him. - Where does this error tempt me in practice? - What act does this Gospel require of me today? TODAY'S SAINT OR FEAST Sunday within the Octave of Corpus Christi The great supper refused and offered. The Sunday within the Octave of Corpus Christi gives the parable of the great supper, where invited guests excuse themselves and the poor are brought in. Within the Eucharistic octave, the Gospel warns that no earthly possession, business, or domestic attachment may be preferred to the banquet of God. Do not dress neglect as prudence. When God invites, the Catholic answer must be prompt, grateful, and free. BREVIARY WITNESS The great supper and the excuses of men. Matins - Sunday within the Octave of Corpus Christi - The Sunday within the Corpus Christi octave sets the parable of the great supper inside the Church's Eucharistic contemplation. - Its witness warns that respectable excuses can still reject God's invitation when earthly goods are preferred to the banquet of grace. Name your excuses honestly. The invitation of God is mercy, and refusing it under polite reasons remains refusal. Instruction from the Breviary The Breviary witness for Sunday within the Octave of Corpus Christi is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live. Today's witness is gathered under The great supper and the excuses of men.. Its first point is this: The Sunday within the Corpus Christi octave sets the parable of the great supper inside the Church's Eucharistic contemplation. Its next point develops the lesson: Its witness warns that respectable excuses can still reject God's invitation when earthly goods are preferred to the banquet of grace. The practical instruction is: Name your excuses honestly. The invitation of God is mercy, and refusing it under polite reasons remains refusal. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over. - What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend? - What virtue does the Church place before me through it? - What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson? FROM MATINS The great supper and the hunger that grows by tasting. Matins - Third Nocturn - Sunday within the Octave of Corpus Christi Pope St. Gregory the Great "In the spiritual, hunger indeed gendereth fulness, but fulness gendereth hunger." - The Breviary places the parable of the great supper within the Corpus Christi octave, warning against excuses before God's invitation. - St. Gregory distinguishes bodily dainties, which weary the appetite when possessed, from spiritual dainties, which increase holy hunger as they are tasted. - The soul becomes sick through long famine when it refuses inward sweetness and loves only outward things. Do not excuse yourself from the banquet of grace. Taste the things of God until appetite returns, and let spiritual hunger overcome the starvation of worldliness. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Faith Must Be Confessed Publicly The Church places this truth before you today: Catholic faith is not a private sentiment. It must be confessed, defended, and lived before men when duty requires it. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church is sent to all nations. Her public confession cannot be reduced to hidden feeling or private preference. The grace to be practiced is Prompt response to divine invitation, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Reject both presumption and despair; labor faithfully with grace, trusting God's mercy and fearing every willing separation from Him. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist cowardly peace when silence would imply consent to error. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing prompt response to divine invitation when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the conversion required to make your Marian profession truthful where habitual conduct has contradicted it. Honor Our Lady throughout the day by obeying her Son, avoiding every occasion of sin, professing His Faith, and serving souls. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of catholic; the witness placed beside it is St. Athanasius. Your resolution before God: Read Luke 14:16-24 and remove the concrete excuses that have weakened prayer, worship, or Eucharistic hunger. Carry this word: A polite excuse can still refuse the invitation of God. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "All that is in this world is vanity, but to love God and only to serve Him." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 1, p. 9 Created things are good when they lead the soul to God and become dangerous when they claim the heart. Put the day's lesser goods beneath the one necessary end. Vanity does not always announce itself through great ambition. It often appears as a small comfort you believe you cannot surrender, an opinion you must defend, or praise you continue to replay. Ask God to show you the attachment that is quietly asking to be treated as necessary. Today's Practice: Renounce needless comforts whenever they compete with prayer, duty, or charity, and offer the sacrifices to God through Mary. DAILY EXAMEN Test devotion by its fruits, repent of contradiction between profession and life, and entrust final perseverance to Our Lady. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, thank Thee for calling me to the banquet of grace. Expose the respectable excuses by which I place lesser goods before worship, and make my answer prompt and grateful. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
