CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary 2026-07-02 - Time after Pentecost - Double of the Second Class - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Commemoration: a shorter liturgical remembrance of another saint or observance occurring on the same day. Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith. Virgin: in a saint's title, a woman honored for consecrating her chastity and whole life to Christ. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR At the Visitation, Our Lady receives Christ inwardly and carries Him in haste to the house of St. Elizabeth. Her haste is peaceful obedience, not agitation: true Marian devotion magnifies God and becomes humble service that leaves another household nearer to Christ. With Mary, listen for the command of Christ: Do whatever He shall say to you. Ask for Our Lady's recollection before the noise of the day begins. Let her lead the mind away from distraction and toward the will of her Son. "This devotion consists, then, in giving ourselves entirely to Our Lady, in order to belong entirely to Jesus through her." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 121 True devotion is not measured by the warmth of a feeling or the number of Marian words upon the lips. St. Louis de Montfort speaks of a gift of self. What is placed in Mary's hands must no longer be withheld whenever obedience becomes costly, prayer becomes dry, or duty asks to be preferred to inclination. Do not be frightened by the greatness of this surrender. Our Lady does not impoverish the soul that gives itself to her; she teaches it to cease wasting itself upon vanity and to belong more simply to Jesus. Let Our Lady bring Christ into the house. The Visitation teaches prompt charity, Marian mediation, hidden grace, and joy before the Lord even when He comes veiled. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Christ Is King Over Public Life The Church places this truth before you today: Our Lord's kingship is not confined to private devotion. Men, families, laws, and nations are subject to His authority. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church's Catholicity includes the public claim of Christ over all peoples, not merely the private consolation of believers. The grace to be practiced is Prompt charity under Mary's rule, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Imitate Mary's obedience. Catholic obedience hears God first, receives the truth whole, and refuses every command that would require sin or betrayal of the Faith. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist secular liberalism, which treats society as though it could be rightly ordered without Christ. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing prompt charity under Mary's rule when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. When the duty is difficult, make Mary's fiat your own: accept God's will without bargaining, while using every lawful means duty requires. Begin this act with the aspiration, 'Jesus, living in Mary, live and reign in me.' Then perform it faithfully. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of catholic; the witness placed beside it is Pope Pius XI. Your resolution before God: Perform needed services promptly and quietly, asking Our Lady to keep self-display out of them. Carry this word: With Our Lady, carry Christ rather than yourself into the duties of the day. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Wherefore, if we will have the true understanding of Christ's Gospels, we must study to conform our life to His life as nigh as we can." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 1, p. 9 The Gospel is not given only to inform the mind. Grace asks that the life of Christ become visible throughout your conduct today, with particular attention to the virtue shown in the appointed mystery. It is possible to admire Our Lord while quietly refusing His manner of life. Ask where He is inviting you to become more patient, hidden, truthful, obedient, or forgiving. Conformity begins when admiration accepts a cost. Today's Practice: Before today's decisions, ask: How does fidelity to Christ govern this? DAILY EXAMEN Examine whether you obeyed Christ promptly or delayed through self-will. Entrust repentance and amendment to Our Lady. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord Jesus Christ, through Thy holy Mother, make my charity prompt, humble, recollected, and wholly ordered to Thy glory. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
