CITY OF GOD IN EXILE THE DAILY PILGRIMAGE "Now therefore, ye children, hear me: Blessed are they that keep my ways." - Proverbs 8:32 "Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. [...] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." - Luke 12:32-34 St. Zephyrinus, Pope and Martyr 2026-08-26 - Time after Pentecost - Simple - red PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Ecclesiastical or ecclesial: belonging or relating to the Church; the words refer to her life, law, worship, ministers, or common mission. Clergy or cleric: the Church's ordained ministers; a cleric is a deacon, priest, or bishop. Ordination: the sacrament by which a baptized man is made a deacon, priest, or bishop and receives the grace and authority needed for that ministry. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR The Time after Pentecost teaches perseverance after the great feasts. Many souls receive light and then return to forgetfulness. The pilgrim must instead turn light into rule: morning prayer, the Angelus, Rosary, examination, custody of speech, and fidelity to the duty before him. Fix your gaze upon Jesus Christ as the sole Last End of this devotion and ask to be conformed, united, and consecrated to Him. Consecrate yourself to Jesus through Mary and ask that every part of the day increase conformity, union, and belonging to Him. "All our perfection consists in being conformed, united, and consecrated to Jesus Christ; and therefore the most perfect of all devotions is, without any doubt, that which the most perfectly conforms, unites, and consecrates us to Jesus Christ. Now, Mary being the most conformed of all creatures to Jesus Christ, it follows that, of all devotions, that which most consecrates and conforms the soul to our Lord is devotion to His holy Mother, and that the more a soul is consecrated to Mary, the more is it consecrated to Jesus." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 120 Jesus Christ is not merely associated with this devotion; He is its measure and end. Christian perfection is conformity, union, and consecration to Him. Mary serves that end because no creature is more perfectly conformed to her divine Son, and her entire maternal action forms His likeness within souls. St. Louis de Montfort therefore identifies perfect consecration to Jesus with complete consecration through Mary and a perfect renewal of Baptism's vows and promises. Every Marian act must renew renunciation of Satan, sin, worldly maxims, and self-rule while deepening faith, worship, obedience, and total belonging to Christ. PRACTICE Imitate the concrete virtues shown by today's saint, beginning in the hidden circumstances of your own state in life. QUOTE OF THE DAY "He who prays is certainly saved. He who prays not is certainly damned." St. Alphonsus Liguori, The Great Means of Salvation and of Perfection, Part I, chapter 1, conclusion ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - August 26 At Rome, St. Zephirinus, pope and martyr. — In the same city, during the persecution of Valerian, the holy martyrs Irenseus and Abundius, who were thrown into a sewer from which they had taken the body of blessed Concordia. Their bodies were drawn out by the priest Justin, and buried in a crypt near St. Lawrence. — At Vintimigilia, a city of Liguria, St. Secundus, martyr, a distinguished man and officer in the Theban Legion. — At Bergamo, in Lombardy, St. Alexander, martyr, who was one of the same legion, and endured martyrdom by being beheaded for the constant confession of the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. — Among the Marcians, the Saints Simplicius, and his sons Constantius and Victorian, who were first tortured in different manners, and then being struck with the axe, obtained the crown of martyrdom, in the time of the emperor Antoninus. — At Nicomedia, the martyrdom of St. Adrian, son of the emperor Probus. For reproaching Licinius on account of the persecution raised against Christians, he was put to death by his order. His body was buried at Argyopolis by his uncle Domitius, bishop of Byzantium. — In Spain, St. Victor, martyr, who merited the crown of martyrs by being slain by the Moors for the faith of Christ. — At Capua, St. Rufinus, bishop and confessor. — At Pistoja, St. Felix, priest and confessor. — At Lima, in Peru, St. Rose of St. Mary, virgin, of the third Order of St. Dominic. Her feast is celebrated on the 30th of this month. TODAY'S SAINT OR FEAST St. Zephyrinus Pope and martyr, shepherd in a troubled age. St. Zephyrinus is honored in the Roman calendar as pope and martyr, a shepherd placed before the Church amid trials, disputes, and the need to guard apostolic faith. His feast reminds the faithful that the papacy is not a secondary detail in Catholic life. Christ founded a visible, hierarchical Church, and true authority exists to guard doctrine, worship, sacraments, and souls. Let St. Zephyrinus strengthen your Catholic sense of authority. The answer to false authority is not private religion, but fidelity to the Church as Christ founded her: visible, apostolic, sacramental, and ruled by truth. FROM MATINS A Pope ordering sacred ministry beneath apostolic authority. Matins - One Nocturn - St. Zephyrinus, Pope and Martyr Roman Breviary "None but learned men and well known and spoken of should be set apart to that office." - The proper lesson places ordination, episcopal judgment, and sacred ministry beneath ecclesiastical order rather than private impulse. - It teaches reverence for the Bishop's Holy Liturgy and for the authority of the Apostolic See in grave judgments concerning bishops. - St. Zephyrinus governed and suffered as a witness, joining discipline of the clergy to perseverance in the Faith. Pray for clergy who are learned, proven, and faithful. Sacred office is not self-appointment; it is a trust ordered for worship, doctrine, and the salvation of souls. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Third Lesson - The Life of St. Zephyrinus Pope Zephyrinus was a Roman, who was called to govern the Church, [in the year 202,] during the reign of the Emperor Severus. It was he who decreed that they who are to be ordained should be ordained only at a fit time, and in the presence of many clerks and laymen, as was indeed already the custom, and that none but learned men and well known and spoken of should be set apart to that office. He decreed also that when the Bishop celebrated the Holy Liturgy, all the Priests should be present around him. Also he decreed that no Patriarch, Primate, or Metropolitan should pronounce sentence on a Bishop, unless they were charged with the authority of the Apostolic See. He lived as Pope eighteen years. He held four December ordinations, wherein he made thirteen Priests, seven Deacons, and thirteen Bishops for divers places. He received the crown of his testimony under the Emperor Antonine, and was buried on the Appian Way, near the cemetery of Callistus, upon the 26th day of August, [in the year 219.] THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Holy Ghost Does Not Author Contradiction The Church places this truth before you today: The Holy Ghost guides the Church into truth; He does not lead her to contradict the faith once delivered. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Appeals to the Spirit must be judged by apostolic doctrine, not by enthusiasm, novelty, or institutional pressure. The grace to be practiced is Fidelity to apostolic authority, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice Christ-centered conformity by submitting intellect, will, passions, body, possessions, relationships, and duties to His rule. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist invoking the Holy Ghost to justify rupture from received doctrine. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing fidelity to apostolic authority when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Reject every attachment or devotional distortion that resists Christ's likeness, His commandments, His Cross, or His sovereign rights. Make every honor of Our Lady produce deeper Catholic faith, worthy worship, moral obedience, sacrificial charity, and union with Jesus. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Irenaeus. Your resolution before God: Imitate the concrete virtues shown by today's saint, beginning in the hidden circumstances of your own state in life. Carry this word: The saints are living teachers of doctrine and virtue. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "We be all frail: but thou shalt judge no man more frail than thyself." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 2, p. 11 Catholic judgment rejects error without forgetting one's own need of mercy. Let vigilance begin with the disorder nearest at hand: your own. You need not call falsehood harmless in order to be humble. Humility simply refuses to use another person's fault as shelter from repentance. Condemn what God condemns, pray for the soul in danger, and then ask whether the same root - pride, fear, sensuality, or human respect - has found a quieter form in you. Today's Practice: When another's fault irritates you, pray for that soul and examine the same root in yourself. DAILY EXAMEN Measure the day by conformity and union with Christ, repent of every resistance, and renew complete consecration through Mary. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, let the saints of this day teach me how doctrine becomes life, how virtue endures trial, and how fidelity resists the errors of its age. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. Nota de la Iglesia: Apostolic Defensor: St. Irenaeus Defensa católica: Appeals to the Spirit must be judged by apostolic doctrine, not by enthusiasm, novelty, or institutional pressure. Error que resistir: Resist invoking the Holy Ghost to justify rupture from received doctrine. VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR Fidelity to apostolic authority. Ponga la virtud en práctica de este modo: Reject both rebellion against authority and obedience to falsehood. - ¿Dónde será probada esta virtud en mis deberes reales de hoy? - ¿Qué mera apariencia natural podría confundir con la virtud misma? - ¿Qué acto concreto realizaré antes de la noche? ORACIÓN O Lord, let the saints of this day teach me how doctrine becomes life, how virtue endures trial, and how fidelity resists the errors of its age. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
