CITY OF GOD IN EXILE THE DAILY PILGRIMAGE "Now therefore, ye children, hear me: Blessed are they that keep my ways." - Proverbs 8:32 "Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. [...] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." - Luke 12:32-34 15th Sunday after Pentecost 2026-09-06 - Time after Pentecost - Semi-Double Sunday - green PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Apostolic: belonging to the faith, mission, teaching, or authority handed down from Christ through the apostles. Bishop: a successor of the apostles charged with teaching, sanctifying, and governing a local Church. Four marks of the Church: the identifying qualities named in the Creed: Christ's Church is one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR At Pentecost the Holy Ghost strengthened the apostles to preach Christ publicly and carry the Gospel to the nations. His work is not private excitement separated from doctrine, worship, and the authority Christ established. The faithful should ask Him for zeal that makes them more obedient to revealed truth, more constant in charity, and more courageous in Catholic witness. Receive total consecration as an ancient and necessary renewal rather than a novelty or an optional ornament of Christian life. Ask for the humility to receive ancient Catholic formation and the seriousness to reject indifference toward every baptismal obligation. "No one can object to this devotion as either a new or an indifferent one. It is not new; because the Councils, the Fathers, and many authors both ancient and modern, speak of this consecration to our Lord, in renewing the vows and promises of Baptism, as of a thing anciently practised, and which they counsel to all Christians. Neither is it a matter of indifference." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 131 St. Louis de Montfort rejects two evasions. Consecration is not a spiritual novelty detached from Catholic memory, because it renews the ancient vows and promises of Baptism. Neither is forgetfulness harmless, because practical indifference to baptismal belonging becomes a source of disorder and danger to salvation. The precise devotional form is freely embraced, but the realities it intensifies are binding upon every baptized Christian: renunciation of Satan and sin, profession of the true Faith, allegiance to Jesus Christ, and fulfillment of baptismal obligations. Do not dismiss total consecration as exotic, nor treat the duties it renews as optional. PRACTICE Examine religious claims by asking whether they agree with the Catholic Church identified by her four marks, rather than judging by impression or preference. QUOTE OF THE DAY "It is a great error of this age that all religions are alike." Pope Leo XIII, Humanum Genus, n. 16 NOVENA IN PROGRESS Novena for the Nativity of Our Lady - Day 8 of 9 Preparing for Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 2026-09-08. PETITION Ask for childlike purity, Marian trust, and renewal of Catholic homes beneath Our Lady's care. NOVENA PRAYER Vouchsafe that I may praise thee, O sacred Virgin; give me strength against thine enemies, and against the enemy of the whole human race. Give me strength humbly to pray to thee. Give me strength to praise thee in prayer with all my powers, through the merits of thy most sacred nativity, which for the entire Christian world was a birth of joy, the hope and solace of its life. When thou wast born, O most holy Virgin, then was the world made light. Happy is thy stock, holy thy root, and blessed thy fruit; for thou alone, as a virgin filled with the Holy Ghost, didst merit to conceive thy God, as a virgin to bear thy God, as a virgin to bring Him forth, and after His birth to remain a virgin. Have mercy therefore upon me, a sinner, and give me aid, O Lady, so that just as thy nativity—glorious from the seed of Abraham, sprung from the tribe of Juda, illustrious from the stock of David—didst announce joy to the entire world, so may it fill me with true joy and cleanse me from every sin. Pray for me, O Virgin most prudent, that the gladsome joys of thy most helpful nativity may put a cloak over all my sins. O holy Mother of God, flowering as the lily, pray to thy sweet Son for me, a wretched sinner. Amen. Prayer of the Church: Grant to us, Thy servants, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the gift of heavenly grace; that to those for whom the delivery of the Blessed Virgin was the commencement of salvation, the commemoration of her nativity may give increasing peace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. A FAITHFUL ACT Pray for children, mothers, and households wounded by modern errors. Novena to Our Lady of Sorrows - Day 1 of 9 Preparing for Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 2026-09-15. TODAY'S MYSTERY Devotion to the Seven Sorrows PREPARATORY PRAYER Bid me bear, O Mother blessed, on my heart the wounds impressed suffered by the Crucified! MEDITATION Our sins caused the Passion of Jesus and therefore pierced the heart of His Mother. We must not contemplate her sorrows merely to awaken emotion, but to acquire contrition, hatred of sin, gratitude for redemption, and fidelity beneath the Cross. PETITION Sorrowful Mother, obtain for me true contrition, hatred of sin, and a heart that will remain with Jesus when discipleship becomes costly. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Grant, we beseech Thee, O Lord Jesus Christ, that the most blessed Virgin Mary, Thy Mother, may intercede for us before the throne of Thy mercy, now and at the hour of our death, through whose most holy soul, in the hour of Thine own Passion, the sword of sorrow passed. Through Thee, Jesus Christ, Saviour of the world, Who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, for ever and ever. Amen. A FAITHFUL ACT Examine your conscience honestly, go to confession, and begin the novena with a definite amendment against habitual sin. CONCLUSION Pray the Hail Mary. Then pray the Litany of Loreto. Conclude: Mother of Sorrows, Queen of Martyrs, pray for us! Open the complete Litany of Loreto: https://cityofgodinexile.com/basic-catholic-prayers?entered=1#litany-of-loreto ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - September 6 The prophet Zachary, who returned in his old " age from Chaldea to his own country, and lies buried near the prophet Aggeus. — In Hellespont, St. Onesiphorus, disciple of the Apostles, of whom St. Paul speaks in his letter to Timothy. SUNDAY EPISTLE AND GOSPEL 15th Sunday after Pentecost Principal guide: St. Thomas Aquinas The Epistle commands those who live by the Holy Ghost to walk by Him in meekness, mutual support, perseverance, and ordered charity. The Gospel then shows these truths in their divine source: Christ meets a widow carrying her only son to burial, has compassion upon her, touches the bier, and commands the dead to rise. Supernatural charity does not stand at a distance from another's burden; it goes out to meet death with the mercy and life of Christ. THE EPISTLE Bear burdens, sow in the spirit, and persevere in good Galatians 5:25-26; 6:1-10 "If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so you shall fulfil the law of Christ." "Be not deceived: God is not mocked; for what things a man shall sow, those also shall he reap." "Therefore, whilst we have time, let us work good to all men, but especially to those who are of the household of the faith." St. Thomas explains that the Holy Ghost must be not only the principle by which the soul lives, but also the principle from which its actions proceed. As the body is moved by the soul that gives it life, the Christian's spiritual movements must be governed by the Holy Ghost. St. Paul therefore immediately excludes vainglory, provocation, and envy: these reveal the swelling and agitation of the spirit of the world, not the quiet strength of God's Spirit. When another falls, the spiritual man is not permitted to become harsh or self-satisfied. St. Thomas teaches that correction belongs in a spirit of meekness, joined to remembrance of one's own frailty. He explains the bearing of another's burden in three ways: patiently enduring another's weakness, relieving another's need, and helping to satisfy the debt of punishment through prayer and good works. In this way charity fulfills the law of Christ. Every man must nevertheless examine his own work and answer for his own sins. Mutual support does not erase personal responsibility. The seed placed in the flesh ends in corruption; the seed placed in the spirit through faith, charity, and justice tends toward everlasting life. Because earthly life is the time of sowing, good must be done perseveringly rather than only while it is noticed, easy, or immediately fruitful. Charity extends to all because every man bears God's image, yet it observes a true order. St. Thomas explains that the sinner's human nature is to be loved and helped while his fault is opposed, and that the household of the faith receives a special claim because its members are united not only by nature but by faith and grace. Catholic charity is therefore neither indifferent to truth nor inhuman toward the person in error. THE GOSPEL The Lord of life meets the procession of death Luke 7:11-16 "And when the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her, and said to her: Weep not." "And He came near and touched the bier. And they that carried it stood still. And He said: Young man, I say to thee, Arise." "And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And He delivered him to his mother." The Fathers gathered by St. Thomas first mark that Our Lord comes without being summoned. At the healing of the centurion's servant He had been called; at Naim He freely approaches a misery that has not yet asked Him for anything. The widow's affliction is complete: her only son is dead, her earthly support is gone, and the city can accompany her grief but cannot reverse its cause. Christ sees what the crowd can only mourn. His command to weep not is not coldness toward grief. It follows from compassion and from His knowledge of what He is about to do. The Fathers teach that Christian consolation rests upon the resurrection; sorrow is not denied, but it is forbidden to become hopeless. Life then meets death at the bier, and the procession stops beneath the touch of Christ. Christ does not act as Elias, Eliseus, or St. Peter acted, by supplication to another. He addresses the dead by His own command: 'Young man, I say to thee, Arise.' St. Thomas's Catena emphasizes the irrefragable divine power manifested here. The young man sits up and speaks, signs of a real restoration, and Our Lord gives him back to his mother. The mystery also forms the Church's care for souls. She mourns children dead through mortal sin, but she does not treat spiritual death as beyond the reach of Christ. Her priests preach His word and administer His sacraments; her faithful pray, do penance, instruct with meekness, bear burdens, and refuse despair. Christ alone gives sanctifying life, yet He commands His living members to labor for those who need to rise. HOW THE LESSONS BELONG TOGETHER The Epistle describes the conduct of those alive by the Holy Ghost; the Gospel reveals the Lord from whom that life comes. Christian mercy bears another's burden because Christ first came to meet ours. The fallen man of the Epistle and the dead young man of the Gospel must not be met with vainglory, harshness, or despair. Meek correction names sin truthfully while seeking the sinner's restoration to grace. The widow's grief becomes an image of the Church's sorrow for dead souls, while St. Paul's command supplies the labor of her living children: prayer, penance, instruction, material aid, perseverance in good, and ordered charity toward all. Earthly life is the time of sowing and conversion. The command to arise therefore admits no complacent delay: grace must be received, sin abandoned, duties fulfilled, and charity exercised while time remains. SUNDAY PRACTICE Keep the Lord's Day in the life of the Holy Ghost. Assist at Holy Mass, examine your own conduct before judging another, fulfill every duty of your state, bear patiently the burdens entrusted to you, relieve real needs according to justice and the order of charity, and persevere in prayer and penance for souls in mortal sin. Where correction belongs to your duty, give it truthfully and meekly; oppose the fault, seek the person's restoration to grace, and never surrender a soul to despair. GOSPEL OF THE DAY Young man, I say to thee, arise. 15th Sunday after Pentecost - Luke 7:11-16 "And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said to her: Weep not." Hear the words 'weep not' as compassion, not rebuke. Our Lord first sees the tears, then raises what seemed lost. TODAY'S SAINT OR FEAST 15th Sunday after Pentecost Young man, I say to thee, arise. The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost shows Our Lord raising the widow's son at Naim and returning him to his mother. The day teaches Christ's sovereign mercy over death and the Church's maternal sorrow for souls spiritually dead, whom only the voice of Christ can raise. Do not measure death by human sight alone. The Lord who touches the bier can command the soul to rise. BREVIARY WITNESS Christ raises the widow's son. Matins - 15th Sunday after Pentecost - The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost contemplates Christ raising the dead young man at Naim and giving him back to his mother. - Its witness teaches hope for souls spiritually dead and compassion for the Church's maternal sorrow over her children. Pray where life seems gone. The voice of Christ can raise what human hope already mourns. Instruction from the Breviary The Breviary witness for 15th Sunday after Pentecost is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live. Today's witness is gathered under Christ raises the widow's son.. Its first point is this: The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost contemplates Christ raising the dead young man at Naim and giving him back to his mother. Its next point develops the lesson: Its witness teaches hope for souls spiritually dead and compassion for the Church's maternal sorrow over her children. The practical instruction is: Pray where life seems gone. The voice of Christ can raise what human hope already mourns. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over. - What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend? - What virtue does the Church place before me through it? - What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson? FROM MATINS The widow's son and the raising of dead souls. Matins - Third Nocturn - 15th Sunday after Pentecost St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo "That souls of men are every day called to life is the joy of our Mother the Church." - The Breviary teaches that Christ's visible miracles are signs by which the faithful should understand spiritual realities. - St. Augustine reads the raising of the widow's son as an image of souls dead in mind and called back to life by Christ. - The Church rejoices not only when bodies are raised, but when sinners awake from interior death and receive light. Do not despair of souls that seem dead. Christ sees the death hidden from others, and He alone can command the soul to rise. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Hold the Traditions The Church places this truth before you today: Apostolic tradition is not nostalgia. It is the handing down of what the Church received from Christ and the Apostles. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Tradition protects the faithful from the tyranny of the present moment and from teachers who mistake novelty for life. The grace to be practiced is Hope in Christ's life-giving mercy, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice rooted fidelity by testing devotion against Scripture, Tradition, Catholic authority, and the permanent demands of holy Baptism. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist innovation that claims continuity while contradicting what was handed down. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing hope in Christ's life-giving mercy when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Bear the discipline of inherited truth when novelty attracts or indifference offers relief from demanding obligations and lasting commitments. Renew the ancient baptismal pattern throughout faith, worship, moral conduct, prayer, penance, duty, and resistance to the world. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Paul. Your resolution before God: Examine religious claims by asking whether they agree with the Catholic Church identified by her four marks, rather than judging by impression or preference. Carry this word: Christ's true Church is known by four identifying marks: she is one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic. These marks protect the pilgrim from counterfeit religion. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "It behoveth thee to break thine own will in many things, if thou wilt have peace and concord with others." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 17, p. 27 Concord bought by surrendering truth is false, but many quarrels arise from preference rather than principle. Yield what belongs to self-will while holding fast what belongs to God. Learn to distinguish the two before the moment of conflict. Doctrine, purity, justice, and necessary duty may require firmness. Your preferred method, timing, recognition, or last word usually does not. The soul becomes strong when it stops spending zeal upon the defense of self. Today's Practice: Yield harmless preferences cheerfully whenever truth and duty do not require firmness. DAILY EXAMEN Examine novelty-seeking and indifference, then renew gratitude for the ancient inheritance and obedience to its complete demands. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, keep my mind beneath the Church that is one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic. Do not let feeling, family custom, fear, or numbers replace Thy marks. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. EPÍSTOLA Y EVANGELIO DEL DOMINGO 15th Sunday after Pentecost Guía principal: St. LA EPÍSTOLA Bear burdens, sow in the spirit, and persevere in good Galatians 5:25-26; 6:1-10 "If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so you shall fulfil the law of Christ." "Be not deceived: God is not mocked; for what things a man shall sow, those also shall he reap." "Therefore, whilst we have time, let us work good to all men, but especially to those who are of the household of the faith." St. EL EVANGELIO The Lord of life meets the procession of death Luke 7:11-16 "And when the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her, and said to her: Weep not." "And He came near and touched the bier. CÓMO FORMAN UNA SOLA LECCIÓN The Epistle describes the conduct of those alive by the Holy Ghost; the Gospel reveals the Lord from whom that life comes. PRÁCTICA DEL DOMINGO Keep the Lord's Day in the life of the Holy Ghost. EVANGELIO DEL DÍA Young man, I say to thee, arise. 15th Sunday after Pentecost - Luke 7:11-16 "And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said to her: Weep not." Hear the words 'weep not' as compassion, not rebuke. Our Lord first sees the tears, then raises what seemed lost. SANTO O FIESTA DE HOY 15th Sunday after Pentecost Young man, I say to thee, arise. TESTIMONIO DEL BREVIARIO Christ raises the widow's son. Instrucción del Breviario El testimonio del Breviario para 15th Sunday after Pentecost forma parte de la enseñanza diaria de la Iglesia. No debe leerse como una lista de datos aislados: la Sagrada Escritura, las vidas de los santos, la doctrina y la oración de la Iglesia se unen para formar el juicio y la vida católica. El testimonio de hoy se reúne bajo Christ raises the widow's son.. Su primer punto es: The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost contemplates Christ raising the dead young man at Naim and giving him back to his mother. La instrucción práctica es: Pray where life seems gone. The voice of Christ can raise what human hope already mourns. Pregunte qué verdad se custodia, qué virtud se alaba y qué peligro u olvido se corrige. - ¿Qué verdad enseña o defiende este testimonio del Breviario? - ¿Qué virtud pone la Iglesia ante mí? - ¿Qué juicio o acción debe cambiar por haber recibido esta lección? SERMÓN O LECCIÓN DEL BREVIARIO The widow's son and the raising of dead souls. VERDAD DE LA FE Hold the Traditions Apostolic tradition is not nostalgia. It is the handing down of what the Church received from Christ and the Apostles. Nota de la Iglesia: Apostolic Defensor: St. Paul Defensa católica: Tradition protects the faithful from the tyranny of the present moment and from teachers who mistake novelty for life. Error que resistir: Resist innovation that claims continuity while contradicting what was handed down. VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR Hope in Christ's life-giving mercy. ORACIÓN O Lord, keep my mind beneath the Church that is one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic. Do not let feeling, family custom, fear, or numbers replace Thy marks. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
