CITY OF GOD IN EXILE THE DAILY PILGRIMAGE "Now therefore, ye children, hear me: Blessed are they that keep my ways." - Proverbs 8:32 "Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. [...] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." - Luke 12:32-34 First Sunday of Advent 2026-11-29 - Advent - Sunday of the First Class - violet PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY First Sunday of Advent is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves St. Saturninus, Martyr on this date. The Breviary witness panel below comes from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Commemoration: a shorter liturgical remembrance of another saint or observance occurring on the same day. Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith. Deacon: an ordained minister who assists bishops and priests and is specially entrusted with service, proclamation, and charity. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Advent begins not at Bethlehem but with the return of Christ in majesty, so that tender expectation remains joined to judgment and holy fear. The Church does not teach fear to drive the soul from God, but to awaken it from sin and false security. Begin Advent awake, with confession, prayer, and a real amendment of life. Through Mary, receive the day from Jesus Christ and return it to Him. Place every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation into the hands of Our Lady, asking her to present the whole day to her Divine Son. "It was through the most holy Virgin Mary that Jesus came into the world, and it is also through her that He has to reign in the world." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 1 God did not choose Our Lady because He needed assistance from a creature. He chose her freely, and by that choice He teaches us something about His own order: the Word came to us in humility, hidden beneath a Mother's heart, and He wills that pride should not prescribe the road by which grace reaches a soul. You may desire the reign of Christ while still guarding some chamber of life for self-will. Bring that guarded place into the light today. Ask Mary to receive it, not as its final end, but as the Mother appointed to form in you a more obedient welcome for her Divine Son. PRACTICE Choose an Advent rule of prayer, penance, and spiritual reading that is concrete enough to keep. QUOTE OF THE DAY "God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ." St. Paul, Galatians 6:14, Douay-Rheims NOVENA IN PROGRESS Novena to St. Francis Xavier - Day 6 of 9 Preparing for St. Francis Xavier on 2026-12-03. PETITION Ask for apostolic zeal, hatred of false religion, missionary courage, and perseverance in labor for souls. A FAITHFUL ACT Pray for the conversion of those outside the Catholic Faith and for courage to confess Christ without human respect. Novena for the Immaculate Conception - Day 1 of 9 Preparing for Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 2026-12-08. PETITION Ask for purity of doctrine, purity of heart, and hatred of the sin and error that wound souls. A FAITHFUL ACT Practice purity throughout thought, speech, dress, reading, and entertainment. ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - November 29 The vigil of St. Andrew, apostle. — At Rome, on - the Salarian road, the birthday of the holy martyr Saturninus, an aged man, and the deacon Sisinius, in the time of the emperor Maximian. After a long imprisonment, they were, by order of the prefect of the city, placed on the rack, distended with ropes, scourged with rods and whips garnished with metal, then exposed to the flames, taken down from the rack and beheaded. — At Toulouse, in the time of Decius, the holy bishop Saturninus, who was confined by the Pagans in the capitol of that city, and from the highest part of the building precipitated down the stairs; by which fall, having his head crushed, his brains dashed out and his whole body mangled, he rendered his worthy soul to our Lord. — Also, the martyrdom of the Saints Paramon and his companions, to the number of three hundred and seventy-five, under the emperor Decius and the governor Aquilinus. — At Ancyra, St. Philomenus, martyr. During the persecution of the emperor Aurelian, under the governor Felix, he was first exposed to the flames, then having his hands, feet and head pierced with nails, consummated his martyrdom. — At Veroli, the holy martyrs Blasius and Demetrius. — At Todi, St. Illuminata, virgin. GOSPEL OF THE DAY Look up, and lift up your heads. First Sunday of Advent - Luke 21:25-33 "Look up, and lift up your heads, because your redemption is at hand." Let Our Lord wake the heart without terrifying it. He asks you to look up, not because the world is calm, but because redemption is nearer than fear admits. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches Advent begins with judgment, so that hope may be sober and watchful. The passing world is not the measure of Christian expectation; the words of Christ do not pass away. Error corrected: The sleepy presumption that time belongs to us and conversion can be delayed. - Where does this error tempt me in practice? - What act does this Gospel require of me today? TODAY'S SAINT OR FEAST St. Saturninus Aged martyr tortured and beheaded on the Salarian road. The Martyrology commemorates St. Saturninus, an aged man, with the deacon Sisinius at Rome on the Salarian road. After long imprisonment they were racked, scourged with rods and metal-tipped whips, exposed to flames, taken down from the rack, and beheaded. Ask St. Saturninus for endurance when strength is low. Fidelity can be crowned even at the end of a long and painful road. BREVIARY WITNESS The aged martyr's final endurance. Matins - St. Saturninus - The Martyrology remembers St. Saturninus, an aged man, with the deacon Sisinius, after imprisonment, racking, scourging, flames, and beheading. - His witness teaches that old age and weakness do not remove the call to final perseverance. Ask for endurance to the end. The last stretch of the road still belongs to Christ. Instruction from the Breviary The Breviary witness for St. Saturninus is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live. Today's witness is gathered under The aged martyr's final endurance.. Its first point is this: The Martyrology remembers St. Saturninus, an aged man, with the deacon Sisinius, after imprisonment, racking, scourging, flames, and beheading. Its next point develops the lesson: His witness teaches that old age and weakness do not remove the call to final perseverance. The practical instruction is: Ask for endurance to the end. The last stretch of the road still belongs to Christ. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over. - What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend? - What virtue does the Church place before me through it? - What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson? FROM MATINS The old world and the Judge who comes. Matins - Third Nocturn - First Sunday of Advent Pope St. Gregory the Great "He telleth us what will be the evils of the world as it groweth old." - The Breviary opens Advent with the second coming of Christ, so that desire for Bethlehem remains joined to holy fear of judgment. - St. Gregory teaches that the convulsions of the world are permitted to wean the faithful from worldly affections. - Advent vigilance is not sentiment, but readiness before the Lord who comes as Saviour and Judge. Begin Advent awake. Let collapsing earthly security drive the soul toward Christ, not into panic, distraction, or love of the passing world. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Church Suffers Without Ceasing to Be the Church The Church places this truth before you today: The Church can be eclipsed, persecuted, betrayed, and reduced in visible splendor, yet Christ does not fail in His promises. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Exile must not make the faithful invent another Church, nor despair of the one Christ founded. The grace to be practiced is Perseverance through age and torment, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Ask Our Lady to form this virtue in you by teaching you her humility: she received every gift from God and returned all glory to Him. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist both triumphalist denial of crisis and despairing denial of Christ's indefectible Church. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing perseverance through age and torment when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Do not carry the cross alone or waste it in complaint. Stand beneath it with Our Lady and remain faithful to Jesus. Offer this duty through Mary, without seeking notice, so that it may belong more perfectly to Jesus Christ. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is St. John Fisher. Your resolution before God: Choose an Advent rule of prayer, penance, and spiritual reading that is concrete enough to keep. Carry this word: The soul that awaits the Judge faithfully can desire the coming of the Saviour. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Wherefore, if we will have the true understanding of Christ's Gospels, we must study to conform our life to His life as nigh as we can." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 1, p. 9 The Gospel is not given only to inform the mind. Grace asks that the life of Christ become visible throughout your conduct today, with particular attention to the virtue shown in the appointed mystery. It is possible to admire Our Lord while quietly refusing His manner of life. Ask where He is inviting you to become more patient, hidden, truthful, obedient, or forgiving. Conformity begins when admiration accepts a cost. Today's Practice: Before today's decisions, ask: How does fidelity to Christ govern this? DAILY EXAMEN Return the completed day into Our Lady's hands. Ask her to obtain pardon for its faults and to preserve whatever grace bore fruit. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord Jesus Christ, awaken me from sin and sloth; make this Advent a true preparation for Thy grace, Thy Nativity, and Thy final coming. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. Su primer punto es: The Martyrology remembers St. Saturninus, an aged man, with the deacon Sisinius, after imprisonment, racking, scourging, flames, and beheading. La instrucción práctica es: Ask for endurance to the end. The last stretch of the road still belongs to Christ. VERDAD DE LA FE The Church Suffers Without Ceasing to Be the Church The Church can be eclipsed, persecuted, betrayed, and reduced in visible splendor, yet Christ does not fail in His promises. Nota de la Iglesia: One Defensor: St. John Fisher Defensa católica: Exile must not make the faithful invent another Church, nor despair of the one Christ founded. Error que resistir: Resist both triumphalist denial of crisis and despairing denial of Christ's indefectible Church. VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR Perseverance through age and torment. ORACIÓN O Lord Jesus Christ, awaken me from sin and sloth; make this Advent a true preparation for Thy grace, Thy Nativity, and Thy final coming. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
