CITY OF GOD IN EXILE St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, Martyr 2027-04-24 - Eastertide - Double - red PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith. Penance: repentance expressed through prayer, self-denial, reparation, and a real turning away from sin. Capuchin or Capuchin Minorite: a member of the Capuchin branch of the Franciscan order, devoted to poverty, penance, prayer, preaching, and service. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Christ is risen, has ascended in His glorified humanity, and reigns in Heaven. The Church and her members still suffer on earth, but their trials do not overturn His victory. Christian hope is therefore more than an encouraging feeling: it trusts Christ's promise of resurrection and eternal life and gives the faithful a reason to persevere in obedience today. Contemplate the glorified Jesus as true God and true Man, eternally the Son of the Father and forever the Son of Mary according to His sacred humanity. Honor Jesus Christ as Mary's divine Son and ask her to make your will obedient to His in all things. "Inasmuch as grace perfects nature, and glory perfects grace, it is certain that our Lord is still, in heaven, as much the Son of Mary as He was on earth; and that, consequently, He has preserved the most perfect obedience and submission of all children towards the best of all mothers." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 27 The Incarnation was not temporary. Jesus Christ reigns in heaven with the same sacred humanity He received from Our Lady. Yet St. Louis de Montfort immediately guards the truth: Mary is infinitely below her divine Son, and her will is perfectly conformed to the eternal and immutable will of God. Our Lady's intercession can therefore never oppose, correct, or replace Christ's sovereign will. Go to her with confidence because she belongs wholly to Him. Ask her to purify your petitions, obtain what serves salvation, and teach you the filial obedience by which Jesus was subject to her at Nazareth. PRACTICE Let Catholic beauty move you toward concrete duty, prayer, and repentance. QUOTE OF THE DAY "Every best gift, and every perfect gift, is from above, descending from the Father of lights, with whom is no transmutation, nor shadowing of alteration." Holy Scripture, James 1:17, Original Douay-Rheims ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - April 24 At Sevis, in Switzerland, St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, of the Order of Capuchin Minorites, who was sent thither to preach the Catholic faith. He was put to death by the heretics, and was placed among the holy martyrs by the Sovereign Pontiff, Benedict XIV. — At Rome, St. Sabas, a military officer, who bravely confessed Christ before the judge when he was accused of visiting the Christians in prison. For this he was burned with torches and thrown into a caldron of boiling pitch, out of which he came uninjured. Seventy men were converted to Christ at the sight of this miracle, and as they all remained unshaken in the confession of the faith, they were put to the sword. Sabas, however, terminated his martyrdom by being cast into the river. — At Lyons, in France, during the persecution of Verus, the birthday of St. Alexander, martyr. After being imprisoned, he was so lacerated by the cruelty of those who scourged him, that his ribs and the interior of his body were exposed to view. Then he was fastened to the gibbet of the cross, on which he yielded up his blessed soul. Thirty-four others who suffered with him are commemorated on other days. — The same day, during the persecution of Diocletian, the holy martyrs Eusebius, Neon, Leontius, Longinus, and four others, were slain with the sword after enduring great torments. — In England, the demise of St. Mellitus, bishop. Being sent thither by St. Gregory, he converted to the faith the EastSaxons and their king. — At Elvira, in Spain, St. Gregory, bishop and confessor. — At Brescia, St. Honorius, bishop. — In Ireland, St. Egbert, priest and monk, a man of admirable humility and continency. — At Kheims, the holy virgins Bona and Doda. GOSPEL OF THE DAY Blessed are ye when men shall separate you. St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, Martyr - Luke 6:17-23 "Your reward is great in heaven." Ask St. Fidelis for zeal without bitterness. Truth is defended most cleanly when the soul loves those it must correct. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches The martyr-preacher accepts hatred for the sake of the truth that saves souls. St. Fidelis teaches that Catholic zeal must be plain, charitable, and willing to suffer rather than leave souls in error. He corrects the false mercy that would rather be liked than rescue a soul from a lie. Error corrected: The false charity that withholds truth because confession may bring hatred. - Where does this error tempt me in practice? - What act does this Gospel require of me today? HIGHLIGHTED SAINT St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen Capuchin preacher and martyr of the Catholic faith. St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, of the Order of Capuchin Minorites, was sent to preach the Catholic faith in Switzerland. There he was put to death by heretics, sealing by blood the doctrine he preached and the missionary charity that sought souls. Ask St. Fidelis for zeal that is clean of bitterness. The faith must be defended because souls are worth defending. BREVIARY WITNESS The preacher slain for Catholic truth. Matins - St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, Martyr - The Breviary honors St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen as a Capuchin preacher sent to preach the Catholic faith in Switzerland. - His witness teaches missionary charity that opposes error for the sake of souls and accepts the cost of clear confession. Do not call silence charity when souls need truth. St. Fidelis teaches zeal purified by sacrifice. Instruction from the Breviary The Breviary witness for St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, Martyr is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live. Today's witness is gathered under The preacher slain for Catholic truth.. Its first point is this: The Breviary honors St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen as a Capuchin preacher sent to preach the Catholic faith in Switzerland. Its next point develops the lesson: His witness teaches missionary charity that opposes error for the sake of souls and accepts the cost of clear confession. The practical instruction is: Do not call silence charity when souls need truth. St. Fidelis teaches zeal purified by sacrifice. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over. - What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend? - What virtue does the Church place before me through it? - What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson? FROM MATINS The advocate who left the bar to preach truth unto blood. Matins - Second Nocturn - St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, Martyr Roman Breviary and St. Augustine "He accepted this hard task with a willing and joyful heart." - The Breviary remembers St. Fidelis as a learned advocate who practiced justice, mastered anger, perceived the dangers of worldly ambition, and entered Capuchin poverty. - Prayer, sacred study, strict observance, humility, and preaching formed him to strengthen Catholics and draw those in error toward the truth. - Knowing that plots surrounded his mission, he prepared for the final conflict and willingly returned to preach, offering the first fruits of martyrdom from the new missionary congregation. Ask St. Fidelis for joyful courage before a hard duty. Govern yourself before correcting others, preach for conversion rather than victory, and prepare the soul before danger arrives. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Truth and Charity Cannot Be Divided The Church places this truth before you today: Charity loves the real good of the soul, and therefore cannot ask truth to be hidden, softened into falsehood, or traded for comfort. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The saints defended truth sharply when souls were endangered, yet their severity was ordered to salvation, not pride. The grace to be practiced is Missionary zeal crowned by martyrdom, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice filial obedience by receiving every lawful command promptly, reverently, and without self-willed reservation. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist the counterfeit charity that calls correction unkind while leaving souls in danger. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing missionary zeal crowned by martyrdom when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the humiliation of dependence and correction after the example of the Incarnate Word, who freely chose a hidden and obedient life. Bring every intention to Our Lady while surrendering its outcome completely to the sovereign will of her Son. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Bernard of Clairvaux. Your resolution before God: Let Catholic beauty move you toward concrete duty, prayer, and repentance. Carry this word: The Church's beauty is order, truth, sacrifice, and holiness. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "If it be lawful and expedient to speak, speak then of God and of such things as are to the edifying of thy soul or of thy neighbour's." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 10, p. 18 Speech is a stewardship. Our Lady's recollection teaches the pilgrim that silence is not emptiness but a guard placed around charity and truth. Not every true observation must be spoken, and not every fault must be exposed by you. Before speaking, ask whether the words serve God's truth, a real duty, or the good of a soul. If they serve only irritation, curiosity, or the wish to appear discerning, let silence make the sacrifice. Today's Practice: Omit unnecessary remarks and use the silence to make holy aspirations. DAILY EXAMEN Examine where self-will resisted God, rightful authority, or duty, and ask Our Lady to lead you back to Jesus in humble obedience. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, purify my love for Catholic beauty. Let it lead me to obedience, reverence, valid worship, and sanctity rather than taste alone. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
