CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Ascension of Our Lord 2027-05-06 - Eastertide - Double of the First Class - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Ascension of Our Lord is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves St. John before the Latin Gate, Apostle on this date. The secondary saint panel below comes from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Ascension: Christ's return to the Father in His glorified humanity forty days after the Resurrection. Apostle: one sent by Christ with authority to preach and establish the Church; the title especially names the Twelve and St. Paul. Apostolic: belonging to the faith, mission, teaching, or authority handed down from Christ through the apostles. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Christ is risen, has ascended in His glorified humanity, and reigns in Heaven. The Church and her members still suffer on earth, but their trials do not overturn His victory. Christian hope is therefore more than an encouraging feeling: it trusts Christ's promise of resurrection and eternal life and gives the faithful a reason to persevere in obedience today. Beside Our Lady, learn to persevere beneath the Cross without surrendering truth or hope. Ask Mary, Queen of Martyrs, for constancy. Offer in advance the contradiction, delay, or sorrow that divine Providence may permit. "The more often we do so, the sooner we shall be sanctified, and attain to union with Jesus Christ, which always follows necessarily on our union with Mary, because the spirit of Mary is the spirit of Jesus." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 259 Union with Our Lady is not a resting place apart from Christ. Her whole interior life belongs to Him. She believes His word, receives His will, keeps His mysteries, shares His sacrifice, and desires His glory. A soul formed in her spirit therefore becomes less occupied with itself and more ready for the reign of Jesus. When a cross arrives, resist the habit of watching yourself suffer. Turn instead toward Christ with Mary. Ask not first whether the burden feels bearable, but how it may be carried faithfully, without sin, complaint, or surrender of hope. PRACTICE Read Acts 1:1-11. Then begin repairing your known neglected duties in their proper order, in obedience to the King who reigns in Heaven. Faith is not private consolation only; it must be confessed, taught, and guarded. Error corrected: The retreat that calls itself prudence while hiding the faith. - Where does this error tempt me in practice? - What act does this Gospel require of me today? HIGHLIGHTED SAINT Ascension of Our Lord The King ascends and sends His Church. On Ascension Day, Our Lord is taken up into Heaven after commanding the apostles to preach the Gospel to every creature. The feast teaches both triumph and mission: Christ reigns at the right hand of the Father, and His Church must confess His doctrine, administer His sacraments, and live in hope of His return. Look upward without abandoning duty. The ascended Christ rules, intercedes, and sends His Church into the world with divine authority. SECONDARY SAINT ASSIGNED TO THIS DATE St. John before the Latin Gate Apostolic love proved by accepting suffering with Christ. This feast honors St. John the Apostle in connection with his suffering for Christ before the Latin Gate. In the Gospel, Christ's chalice means the suffering and sacrifice that His disciples must be willing to share with Him. St. John's trial teaches that closeness to Christ does not remove suffering; it gives the disciple grace to remain faithful through it. Ask St. John for love strong enough to suffer without becoming cold or bitter. Sharing Christ's chalice means accepting the sacrifices required by fidelity while continuing to love God and neighbor. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. Matins - Second Nocturn - Ascension of Our Lord Pope St. Leo the Great "The Ascension of Christ is exaltation for us." - The Breviary keeps the fortieth day after Easter as the crown of the forty days in which Christ confirmed the reality of His Resurrection. - St. Leo teaches that the Ascension is not Christ's departure from concern for His members, but the exaltation of the Manhood He took from us. - Where the Head has gone in glory, the hope of the Body is summoned to follow; Paradise is made sure because Christ has entered as our Head. Lift the mind where Christ has gone. The Ascension teaches the soul to live on earth without making earth its home, because our Head reigns above. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Sacrifice of the Mass Is the Heart of Catholic Worship The Church places this truth before you today: Catholic worship is centered on the true Sacrifice of the altar, offered by the priest in union with Christ the eternal High Priest. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The same sacrificial worship belongs to the Church throughout the world; it is not a local invention or a merely human assembly rite. The grace to be practiced is Heavenly hope and apostolic obedience, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Imitate Mary's fortitude: quiet, steadfast, and wholly joined to the sacrifice of her Son. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist every reduction of the Mass to a memorial meal, community symbol, or religious performance. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing heavenly hope and apostolic obedience when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Do not seek suffering, but do not flee the cross attached to duty. Unite it to Christ through the Sorrowful Mother. Perform today's difficult act without dramatizing the cost. Let love, not self-observation, measure the offering. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of catholic; the witness placed beside it is Council of Trent. With Mary, seek first to be faithful to Jesus Christ and His Church, whether praise follows or not. The desire to be supported can subtly alter judgment before you notice it. It softens a necessary word, delays a duty, or makes loneliness appear to be proof that fidelity was mistaken. Examine the act by Catholic truth and your real obligations; then leave the company or opposition of men in God's hands. Today's Practice: Perform right acts without checking whether anyone noticed. DAILY EXAMEN Place every wound and disappointment under Our Lady's mantle. Forgive injuries and ask for grace to remain at the Cross. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O ascended Lord, lift my mind toward Heaven and keep my hands faithful to the work Thou hast given me. Make me obey Thy commands while I await eternal life with Thee. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
