CITY OF GOD IN EXILE St. Gregory VII, Pope and Confessor 2027-05-25 - Time after Pentecost - Double - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Ecclesiastical or ecclesial: belonging or relating to the Church; the words refer to her life, law, worship, ministers, or common mission. Clergy or cleric: the Church's ordained ministers; a cleric is a deacon, priest, or bishop. Commemoration: a shorter liturgical remembrance of another saint or observance occurring on the same day. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR The Time after Pentecost teaches perseverance after the great feasts. Many souls receive light and then return to forgetfulness. The pilgrim must instead turn light into rule: morning prayer, the Angelus, Rosary, examination, custody of speech, and fidelity to the duty before him. Enter with reverence into the hidden life of Jesus in the virginal sanctuary of His Mother. Place the unseen hours of this day within the hidden life of Jesus and Mary. "God the Son has descended into her virginal womb, as the new Adam into the terrestrial paradise, to take His pleasure there, and to work in secret the marvels of His grace." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 18 The Eternal Son chose enclosure, dependence, silence, and obscurity. His hidden life overturns the demand of self-love to be seen, consulted, praised, and immediately effective. The greatest work of God began where the world could neither observe nor applaud it. Let Jesus living in Mary judge your impatience with hidden duties. Grace may be working most deeply where there is little sensible reward. Remain exact in prayer, family obligations, honest labor, purity, and sacrifice when only God sees their cost. PRACTICE Show reverence for the Holy Sacrifice in thought, word, and conduct, and pray for souls misled by false worship. QUOTE OF THE DAY "The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom, and his tongue shall speak judgment." Holy Scripture, Psalm 36:30, Original Douay-Rheims ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - May 25 At Salerno, the demise of the blessed pope Gregory VII., a most zealous protector and champion of ecclesiastical liberty. — At Florence, St. Mary Magdalen, virgin, of the Order of the Carmelites, illustrious by the holiness of her life. Her feast is kept on the 27th of May. — At Rome, on the Nomentan road, the birthday of blessed Urban, pope and martyr, by whose exhortation and teaching many, among whom were Tiburtius and Valerian, received the faith of Christ and suffered martyrdom for it. He himself endured many afflictions for the Church of God, and was crowned with martyrdom by being beheaded in the persecution of Alexander Severus. — At Dorostorum, in Mysia, the birthday of the holy martyrs Pasicrates, Valentio, and two others, crowned with them. — At Milan, the holy bishop Denis, who for the Catholic faith was, by the Arian emperor Constantius, banished to Cappadocia, where he yielded his soul to God in a manner almost like that of the martyrs. His sacred body was sent to the blessed bishop Ambrose, at Milan, by bishop Aurelius, with the assistance, it is said, of St. Basil the Great. — At Rome, pope St. Boniface IV., who dedicated the Pantheon to the honor of blessed Mary of the Martyrs. — At Florence, the birthday of St. Zenobius, bishop of that city, renowned for holiness of life and glorious miracles. — In England, St. Aid helm, bishop of Sherburn. — In the territory of Troyes, St. Leo, confessor. — At Assisi, in Umbria, the translation of St. Francis, confessor, in the time of Pope Gregory IX. — At Veroli, in Campania, the translation of St. Mary, mother of James, whose sacred body is rendered illustrious by many miracles. HIGHLIGHTED SAINT St. Gregory VII Pope and confessor who defended the freedom of the Church. St. Gregory VII, the monk Hildebrand raised to the papacy, labored for reform in an age wounded by simony, clerical disorder, and worldly control over sacred office. He defended the liberty of the Church against rulers who wanted holy things treated as possessions of power. His fidelity brought suffering, opposition, and exile. Ask St. Gregory VII for courage to keep holy things free for God. The Church is not served by surrendering her liberty to comfort, rulers, donors, families, or fear. FROM MATINS The freedom of the Church defended unto exile. Matins - Second Nocturn - St. Gregory VII, Pope and Confessor Roman Breviary "I have loved righteousness and hated iniquity, and therefore I am dying in exile." - The Breviary remembers Hildebrand, Pope St. Gregory VII, as a monk, reformer, legate, and pope raised up to keep the Church free. - He sorrowed over lay oppression of ecclesiastical liberty and clerical corruption, resisted simony, compelled Berengarius to abjure error, and labored through councils for reform. - Against Henry IV he stood as a wall for the house of Israel, defending the liberty of the Church even when resistance brought suffering and exile. The Church cannot be governed as the property of the powerful. St. Gregory VII teaches that holy authority must remain free for Christ, even at the cost of loneliness and loss. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Four Marks Are Not Decorative The Church places this truth before you today: The Church must be one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic because she bears the identity Christ gave her, not because men assign those titles by preference. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The marks are tests of recognition. They prevent the faithful from confusing religious intensity, social size, antiquarian taste, or institutional claims with the true Church. The grace to be practiced is Ecclesiastical liberty and reforming courage, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice hidden fidelity by doing every duty well without requiring recognition or visible fruit. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist treating the marks as poetic language detached from visible doctrine, worship, and apostolic continuity. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing ecclesiastical liberty and reforming courage when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Receive obscurity, delay, and enclosure as occasions for union with the hidden Jesus rather than reasons for complaint. Perform all unnoticed duties with recollection, care, and purity of intention beneath the eyes of Jesus and Mary. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is St. Robert Bellarmine. Your resolution before God: Show reverence for the Holy Sacrifice in thought, word, and conduct, and pray for souls misled by false worship. Carry this word: False worship wounds souls because worship forms belief. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "It behoveth thee to break thine own will in many things, if thou wilt have peace and concord with others." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 17, p. 27 Concord bought by surrendering truth is false, but many quarrels arise from preference rather than principle. Yield what belongs to self-will while holding fast what belongs to God. Learn to distinguish the two before the moment of conflict. Doctrine, purity, justice, and necessary duty may require firmness. Your preferred method, timing, recognition, or last word usually does not. The soul becomes strong when it stops spending zeal upon the defense of self. Today's Practice: Yield harmless preferences cheerfully whenever truth and duty do not require firmness. DAILY EXAMEN Return the hidden work of the day to God without measuring its worth by human notice or immediate results. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, give me holy fear before Thy altar. Preserve me from casualness, invention, and every worship that weakens faith in Thy sacrifice. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. SERMÓN O LECCIÓN DEL BREVIARIO The freedom of the Church defended unto exile. VERDAD DE LA FE The Four Marks Are Not Decorative The Church must be one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic because she bears the identity Christ gave her, not because men assign those titles by preference. Nota de la Iglesia: One Defensor: St. Robert Bellarmine Defensa católica: The marks are tests of recognition. They prevent the faithful from confusing religious intensity, social size, antiquarian taste, or institutional claims with the true Church. Error que resistir: Resist treating the marks as poetic language detached from visible doctrine, worship, and apostolic continuity. VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR Ecclesiastical liberty and reforming courage. Ponga la virtud en práctica de este modo: Pray for the freedom of the Church from worldly control. ORACIÓN O Lord, give me holy fear before Thy altar. Preserve me from casualness, invention, and every worship that weakens faith in Thy sacrifice. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
