CITY OF GOD IN EXILE 3rd Sunday after Pentecost 2027-06-06 - Time after Pentecost - Semi-Double Sunday - green PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY 3rd Sunday after Pentecost is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves St. Norbert, Bishop and Confessor on this date. The secondary saint and Breviary sermon or lesson panels below come from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Octave: an eight-day extension of a major feast, allowing the Church to continue praying over the same mystery. Having received sacred orders, he cast aside soft and splendid garments, clothed himself in a sheepskin, and devoted himself wholly to preaching the word of God. He ate only once a day toward evening and then only Lenten food, walking barefoot and in a torn garment even in the winter cold. Thus he entered upon the austerity of penance. Powerful in deed and word, he brought innumerable souls to the Faith, recalled sinners to penance, and restored those at variance to peace and concord. Fifth Lesson - Premontre and a Rule Confirmed by the Church When he was at Laon, the bishop asked him not to leave his diocese. He chose there a deserted place called Premontre and, gathering thirteen companions, instituted the Premonstratensian Order according to the rule divinely received in a vision from St. Augustine. As the fame of his holiness increased daily and many disciples came to him, the same order was confirmed by Pope Honorius II and other Supreme Pontiffs and was wonderfully spread by him through many monasteries. Sixth Lesson - Heresy, Schism, and Ecclesiastical Discipline Coming to Antwerp, he destroyed in that city the wicked heresy of Tanchelm. He shone by the prophetic spirit and by miracles. Afterwards he was created Archbishop of Magdeburg against his will, and he steadfastly defended ecclesiastical discipline, especially clerical celibacy. At the Council of Rheims he gave distinguished aid to Pope Innocent II, and, going to Rome with other bishops, he suppressed the schism of Peter Leonis. At Magdeburg he fell asleep in the Lord, full of the Holy Ghost and renowned for merits, in the year of salvation 1134, on the sixth day of June. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE True Devotion to Mary Forms the Soul in Christ The Church places this truth before you today: True Marian devotion is not sentiment detached from obedience. It brings the soul more deeply under Christ's rule. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Our Lady does not compete with her Son. She forms servants who hear Him, believe Him, and remain beneath His Cross. The grace to be practiced is Penitent confidence in divine mercy, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice doctrinal charity by speaking truth without dilution, treating persons without contempt, and praying earnestly for conversion. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist false Marian devotion that seeks comfort, novelty, or emotion without conversion. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing penitent confidence in divine mercy when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Bear misunderstanding and human disfavor rather than purchase acceptance through silence, false unity, or compromise of the Faith. Remove from your conduct every expression of indifference toward doctrine or Our Lady, and make reparation through prayer, study, witness, and sacrifice. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Louis-Marie de Montfort. Your resolution before God: Pray for priestly holiness and return disorders in your own rule of life to prayerful discipline. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain.
