CITY OF GOD IN EXILE
Ss. John Fisher, Bishop and Martyr, and Thomas More, Martyr
2027-07-09 - Time after Pentecost - Double - red
PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY
Cardinal: a senior cleric of the Roman Church who advises the pope and, under the Church's law, ordinarily helps elect a successor.
Ecclesiastical or ecclesial: belonging or relating to the Church; the words refer to her life, law, worship, ministers, or common mission.
Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith.
TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR
Ss. John Fisher and Thomas More lost office, liberty, and life rather than consent to a false claim against the Church. Their conscience was not private stubbornness; it was judgment formed by Catholic truth and made firm enough to obey Christ when earthly power commanded betrayal. With Our Lady, ask to be hidden from vanity and humbled into truth. Ask for grace to accept the place Providence gives today without inward theatre or complaint.

"He heard her prayers when she begged to be hidden, to be humbled and to be treated as in all respects poor and of no account."
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 3

This prayer of Our Lady is severe only to the part of us that desires religious importance. She does not ask to be separated from God, but to be freed from the false greatness that would draw the heart toward itself. Her littleness makes room for the mighty works of the Lord because she does not seize them as material for self-exaltation.

Do not manufacture humiliation or permit injustice when duty requires a response. But when Providence allows you to be overlooked, misunderstood, or assigned an ordinary place, watch the inward protest. There you may offer Mary something real: the claim of self-love to be accounted greater than God has presently appointed.

PRACTICE
Name the pressures that tempt you to conceal Catholic truth, then make calm acts of fidelity before God.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Yet I earnestly pray Almighty God that He may so strengthen me in this orthodox judgment which I hold, that I may persevere in it unto death."
St. Thomas More, Pope Pius XI, Saevis agitata, May 19, 1935, Acta Apostolicae Sedis 28 (1936), printed p. 197; editorial translation from the Latin.

ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - July 9
At Rome, in the place called the Drop-ever-falling, the birthday of St. Zeno, and ten thousand two hundred and three other martyrs. — At Gortyna, in Crete, in the persecution of Decius, under the governor Lucius, St. Cyril, a bishop, who was thrown into the flames without being injured, though his bonds were burnt. The judge, struck with awe at so great a miracle, set him at liberty, but as the saint began again immediately to preach the faith of Christ with zeal, he was beheaded. — In the town of Thora, on lake Velino, in Italy, the martyrdom of the Saints Anatolia and Audax, under the emperor Decius. Anatolia, a virgin consecrated to Christ, cured, through the whole province of Picenum, Now Ancona. many persons laboring under various infirmities, and made them believe in Christ. By order of the judge Fustinian, she was condemned to various kinds of punishments. She was cured of the sting of a serpent to which she had been exposed; a miracle which converted Audax to the faith. Finally she was transpierced with a sword, whilst her hands were extended in prayer. Audax was committed to prison, and being without delay sentenced to capital punishment, obtained the crown of a martyr. — At Alexandria, the holy martyrs Patermuthius, Copres, and Alexander, who were put to death under Julian the Apostate. — At Briel, in Holland, the martyrdom of the nineteen martyrs of Gorcum. For vindicating the authority of the Roman Church, and the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, they endured various ignominies and torments from the Calvinist heretics, and ended their suffering by being put to death. In the year 1867, Pius IX. placed them among the holy martyrs. — At Martula, St. Brixius, bishop. Under the judge Marcian, after having suffered much for the confession of our Lord, and converted to Christ a great multitude of people, he rested in peace. — At Citta-di-Castello, St. Veronica Giuliani, a Capuchin nun, abbess of the monastery of that town. Born at Mercatelli, in the diocese of Urania, she became illustrious by her great love for suffering and other virtues, and by her heavenly gifts. She was inscribed among holy virgins by pope Gregory XVI.

HIGHLIGHTED SAINT
Ss. John Fisher and Thomas More
Martyrs against false supremacy.
St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More suffered death rather than accept a false claim against the divine constitution of the Church.
Their witness joins doctrine to conscience: fidelity to Christ required public refusal, loss of honors, imprisonment, and martyrdom.
Ask these martyrs for a conscience that cannot be purchased by safety, office, reputation, or pressure to conform. A Catholic conscience is not private stubbornness; it is truth obeyed before God.
BREVIARY WITNESS
Martyrs of conscience before a false supremacy.
Matins - Ss. John Fisher and Thomas More
- The traditional remembrance of these English martyrs sets conscience beneath Catholic truth, not beneath the pressure of king, parliament, or public advantage.
- Their witness is sober and exact: lawful authority becomes tyranny when it demands betrayal of the Church and her divine constitution.
Do not call prudence what is really surrender. When the faith is at stake, the Catholic conscience must be formed enough to stand alone before earthly courts.
Instruction from the Breviary
The Breviary witness for Ss. John Fisher and Thomas More is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live.
Today's witness is gathered under Martyrs of conscience before a false supremacy.. Its first point is this: The traditional remembrance of these English martyrs sets conscience beneath Catholic truth, not beneath the pressure of king, parliament, or public advantage. Its next point develops the lesson: Their witness is sober and exact: lawful authority becomes tyranny when it demands betrayal of the Church and her divine constitution.
The practical instruction is: Do not call prudence what is really surrender. When the faith is at stake, the Catholic conscience must be formed enough to stand alone before earthly courts. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over.
- What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend?
- What virtue does the Church place before me through it?
- What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson?

FROM MATINS
The orthodox judgment held unto death.
Papal Witness - Letters Decretal - Ss. John Fisher, Bishop and Martyr, and Thomas More, Martyr
Pope Pius XI and St. Thomas More
"Yet I earnestly pray Almighty God that He may so strengthen me in this orthodox judgment which I hold, that I may persevere in it unto death."
- Pope Pius XI presents the English schism as a violent rupture of the unity of Catholic doctrine and ecclesiastical government, and honors the martyrs who shed their blood for the Catholic faith and the primacy of the Roman Church.
- St. John Fisher, a bishop and cardinal, and St. Thomas More, a layman and former chancellor, guarded the same inherited Roman faith when royal power demanded assent to a false ecclesiastical supremacy.
- When pardon was offered if he would abandon what his judges called obstinacy, More prayed instead that God would strengthen him in his orthodox judgment until death. His conscience was neither private preference nor defiance for its own sake, but Catholic truth obeyed before God.
Ask these martyrs for a conscience formed by Catholic doctrine and strengthened by grace. Neither office, safety, public pressure, nor the command of a ruler can make betrayal into obedience.
THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE
The Holy Ghost Does Not Author Contradiction
The Church places this truth before you today: The Holy Ghost guides the Church into truth; He does not lead her to contradict the faith once delivered. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Appeals to the Spirit must be judged by apostolic doctrine, not by enthusiasm, novelty, or institutional pressure.
The grace to be practiced is Conscience formed by Catholic truth, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Humility receives truth about oneself from God and does not require either praise or false self-contempt.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist invoking the Holy Ghost to justify rupture from received doctrine. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing conscience formed by Catholic truth when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. When overlooked, remain charitable and exact in duty instead of withdrawing your good will. Let useful acts remain unannounced whenever charity does not require them to be known.
The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Irenaeus.
Your resolution before God: Name the pressures that tempt you to conceal Catholic truth, then make calm acts of fidelity before God.
Carry this word: A conscience formed by truth cannot be purchased by safety, position, or approval.
THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR
"By resisting of passions, then, is gotten the very true peace of heart, and not by following them."
Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 6, p. 15
Peace is not surrender to every feeling. It is order beneath God, won by grace when appetite is made to obey truth and duty.

A passion grows louder when it expects immediate obedience. Do not be alarmed merely because anger, fear, discouragement, or desire speaks forcefully. Place a little silence between the movement and your consent, call upon Jesus and Mary, and choose what remains right.
Today's Practice: Delay impulsive responses and choose the calmer acts required by truth and duty.
DAILY EXAMEN
Examine the moments when being of little account disturbed your peace more than offending God would have done.
- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?
- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?
- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?
PRAYER
O Lord, through Thy martyrs St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, form my conscience and keep me faithful when obedience to men would become betrayal of Thee.
DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM
A brief rule to keep every day:
Begin with morning prayer
Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind.
Keep the Angelus
Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation.
Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament
Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Return to Jesus and Mary
Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation.
Pray the Rosary
Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain.
End with night prayer and examen
Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.

VERDAD DE LA FE
The Holy Ghost Does Not Author Contradiction
The Holy Ghost guides the Church into truth; He does not lead her to contradict the faith once delivered.
Nota de la Iglesia: Apostolic
Defensor: St. Irenaeus
Defensa católica: Appeals to the Spirit must be judged by apostolic doctrine, not by enthusiasm, novelty, or institutional pressure.
Error que resistir: Resist invoking the Holy Ghost to justify rupture from received doctrine.
VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR
Conscience formed by Catholic truth.
Ponga la virtud en práctica de este modo: Refuse religious compromise even when it is demanded by power.
