CITY OF GOD IN EXILE
Finding of St. Stephen, Martyr
2027-08-03 - Time after Pentecost - Semi-Double - red
PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY
Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith.
Spiritual consolation: encouragement, peace, light, or strength permitted by God in prayer; it is a help toward fidelity, not the purpose of the spiritual life.
Redemption: Christ's saving work by which He paid the price of sin through His obedient suffering and death and frees sinners for life with God.
The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears.
TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR
After Pentecost the Church teaches the soul how grace matures. Consolation is not enough. The Spirit of truth forms endurance, obedience, hatred of heresy, reverence for true worship, and courage to confess Christ when the world calls fidelity narrow. Join the praise of Heaven and earth, but ask that your praise of Mary become obedience to her Son. Offer the first Hail Mary slowly, praising God's work in Our Lady and asking to live beneath her standard.

"Every day, from one end of the earth to the other, in the highest heights of the heavens and in the profoundest depths of the abysses, everything preaches, everything publishes, the admirable Mary!"
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 8

St. Louis de Montfort allows the soul to hear a vast chorus of praise, but he does not invite it to remain among beautiful words. Heaven praises Our Lady because God has crowned His own work in her. The devils acknowledge her unwillingly because they cannot erase the victory of the Woman whom God has set against the serpent.

Your praise must therefore take sides. To honor Mary is to reject the spirit that contradicts her: pride instead of humility, impurity instead of her spotless heart, revolt instead of her fiat, and doctrinal compromise instead of her unwavering faith. Let every praise of her today become a refusal of sin.

PRACTICE
Perform hidden acts of charity without seeking notice or return.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Give me wisdom the assistant of thy seats, and repel me not from thy children. […] Send her from thy holy heavens, and from the seat of thy greatness, that she may be with me, and may labour with me, that I may know what is acceptable with thee."
Holy Scripture, Wisdom 9:4, 10, Original Douay-Rheims

HIGHLIGHTED SAINT
Finding of St. Stephen
The protomartyr's relics honored by the Church.
The Finding of St. Stephen honors the discovery of the relics of the first martyr, whose witness began the long procession of Christian blood shed for Christ.
St. Stephen preached Christ before his judges, saw the heavens opened, and prayed for his persecutors while being stoned. His relics teach that the bodies of the saints are not refuse of the past, but members of Christ, temples of the Holy Ghost, and pledges of resurrection.
Let St. Stephen teach reverence for holy remains and holy witness. The Church remembers the bodies of her martyrs because Christ redeems the whole man.
FROM MATINS
The first martyr found, honored, and still fruitful.
Matins - Third Nocturn - Finding of the Body of St. Stephen, the First Martyr
Roman Breviary, St. Augustine, and St. Jerome
"Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."
- The Breviary begins with St. Stephen's witness in Acts: his rebuke of hardened hearts, his vision of Christ standing at the right hand of God, his prayer for his murderers, and his burial by devout men.
- The proper lessons recount the discovery of the bodies of St. Stephen, Gamaliel, Nicodemus, and Abibon, and the honor given to the first martyr's relics.
- St. Augustine records miracles worked through St. Stephen's relics, while St. Jerome's Gospel lesson places martyrdom within Our Lord's warning that prophets, wise men, and scribes would be persecuted.
Honor the bodies and memory of the saints. St. Stephen teaches bold confession, forgiveness of persecutors, reverence for holy relics, and hope that Christ still works through His martyrs for the strengthening of the Church.
FULL BREVIARY LESSONS
Seventh Lesson - St. Jerome's Homily
The Lesson is taken from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (xxiii. 34). At that time: JESUS said unto the Scribes and Pharisees: Behold, I send unto you Prophets, and wise men, and Scribes; and some of them ye shall kill and crucify. And so on.
Homily on this passage by St. Jerome, Priest [at Bethlehem.] (Bk. iv. Commentary on Matth. xxiii.) We have already remarked that the Lord's words, "Fill ye up the measure of your fathers," refer in the first place to Himself, Whom the Jews afterwards put to death. In a secondary sense it may likewise be applied to His disciples, of whom He saith, "Behold, I send unto you Prophets, and wise men, and Scribes." Here observe that, according to the Apostle writing to the Corinthians, there are diversities of gifts among Christ's followers. Some are Prophets of that which is to come; some are wise men, who know the due season for rebuke and exhortation; some are Scribes learned in the law. And of these they stoned Stephen, slew Paul with the sword, crucified Peter, and scourged the Disciples mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles.
Eighth Lesson - St. Jerome's Homily
It is a subject of dispute among commentators who is meant by Zacharias the son of Barachias. We read of several persons of the name of Zacharias. But here, in order to prevent any mistake, it is particularly said, "Whom ye slew between the temple and the altar." I have read various opinions in various places upon this question, and I will give each. First, some hold that Zacharias the son of Barachias is the eleventh of the twelve Minor Prophets; and this opinion is supported by the father's name. But the Bible nowhere telleth us that this Prophet was slain between the temple and the altar; and it is hardly possible that he can have been, for in his time it could scarcely be said that even the ruins of the temple were in existence. Secondly, others maintain that this Zacharias was Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist. This interpretation is derived from the dreams of the Apocryphal Gospels, wherein it is asserted that he was martyred for preaching Christ's coming.
Ninth Lesson - Conclusion of St. Jerome's Homily
A third school will have it that this Zacharias, the son of Barachias, was that Zacharias of whom we read, in the story of the Kings, that he was slain by Joash, king of Judah, between the temple and the altar. Against this it is to be remarked, that that Zacharias was not the son of Barachias, but of Jehoiada the priest; whence it is written, "Joash remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him." The question therefore ariseth, if this opinion be true, why, the name and manner of death both agreeing with this explanation, Zacharias is called the son, not of Jehoiada, but of Barachias. In Hebrew "Barachias" signifieth "the Blessed of the LORD," and "Jehoiada" "Righteousness." In the Gospel used by the Nazarenes, the name of Jehoiada is used instead of Barachias.
THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE
The Papacy Serves the Faith It Receives
The Church places this truth before you today: The Roman Primacy exists to guard, confirm, and govern in the apostolic faith; it is not license to create another religion. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. True authority is recognized by its service to the deposit of faith, not by bare claims severed from Catholic doctrine.
The grace to be practiced is Reverence for martyrdom and holy relics, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Let praise become imitation. Honor Mary's humility by refusing the contrary movement of pride when it first appears.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist confusing the office Christ instituted with commands or claimants that attack the faith the office must protect. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing reverence for martyrdom and holy relics when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. When fidelity separates you from the world's approval, remember that Heaven's judgment is the one that endures. Let your acts visibly reflect Mary's purity, obedience, recollection, and courageous faith.
The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. John Fisher.
Your resolution before God: Perform hidden acts of charity without seeking notice or return.
Carry this word: Charity is clearest when it remains joined to truth.
THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR
"Ask not who said this, but take heed what is said."
Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 5, p. 14
Truth does not become true through fashion, applause, or a celebrated name. Test what you hear by revelation and the perennial teaching of the Church.

Yet à Kempis also rebukes the curiosity that collects authorities without receiving their doctrine. Listen for the truth God is giving through a trustworthy witness, and then permit that truth to correct you. The name of a saint should not become decoration around an unchanged life.
Today's Practice: Reject claims based on novelty or popularity and ask what the Church has always taught.
DAILY EXAMEN
Ask whether your Marian words produced Marian conduct, and entrust the distance between them to her maternal correction.
- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?
- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?
- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?
PRAYER
O Lord, make my charity patient without weakness, firm without harshness, and always ordered toward the salvation of souls.
DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM
A brief rule to keep every day:
Begin with morning prayer
Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind.
Keep the Angelus
Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation.
Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament
Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Return to Jesus and Mary
Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation.
Pray the Rosary
Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain.
End with night prayer and examen
Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
