CITY OF GOD IN EXILE St. Giles, Abbot 2027-09-01 - Time after Pentecost - Simple - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Commemoration: a shorter liturgical remembrance of another saint or observance occurring on the same day. Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith. Confessor: in the traditional calendar, a male saint who openly professed the Faith by a holy life but was not killed as a martyr. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR The Time after Pentecost is the long school of the Holy Ghost. The fire given at Pentecost must become doctrine believed, worship guarded, commandments kept, homes ordered, tongues governed, and charity practiced without novelty or disorder. As a faithful servant of Mary, make room for the reign of Jesus Christ in the smallest duties. Renew your gift of self to Jesus through Mary. Nothing offered is too small when charity places it at the service of the King. "These may be expressed in four words: to do all our actions by Mary, with Mary, in Mary and for Mary; so that we may do them all the more perfectly by Jesus, with Jesus, in Jesus and for Jesus." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 257 St. Louis de Montfort's fourfold practice is not a pious ornament laid over an unchanged life. It gives ordinary actions a new interior order. The soul renounces its own proud and hurried spirit, looks to Mary's dispositions, rests beneath her maternal care, and returns the act through her to Jesus Christ. Offer the day's ordinary work in this manner. Before beginning, surrender self-will; while working, imitate Mary's recollection and fidelity; when the work is finished, place it in her hands without seeking praise. Thus common duties become part of a consecrated life. PRACTICE Pause at midday for a brief act of faith, hope, charity, and contrition. QUOTE OF THE DAY "God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ." St. Paul, Galatians 6:14, Douay-Rheims NOVENA IN PROGRESS Novena for the Nativity of Our Lady - Day 3 of 9 Preparing for Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 2027-09-08. Ask for childlike purity, Marian trust, and renewal of Catholic homes beneath Our Lady's care. Pray for children, mothers, and households wounded by modern errors. ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - September 1 In the province of Narbonne, St. Giles, abbot and confessor. — At Benevento, twelve saintly brothers, martyrs. — In Palestine, the Saints Josue and Gedeon. — At Jerusalem, blessed Anna, prophetess, whose sanctity is revealed in the Gospel. — At Capua, on the Aquarian road, St. Priscus, martyr, who was one of the ancient disciples of Christ. — At Rheims, in France, St. Xystus, disciple of the blessed apostle Peter, who was consecrated by him the first bishop of that city, and received the crown of martyrdom under Nero. — At Todi, in Umbria, St. Terentian, bishop and martyr. Under the emperor Adrian, he was racked, and scourged with whips set with metal by order of the proconsul Laetian, and finally, having his tongue cut out, he ended his martyrdom by undergoing capital punishment. — At Heraclea, St. Ammon, deacon, and forty holy virgins whom he instructed in the faith, and led with him to the glory of matryrdom, under the tyrant Licinius. — In Spain, the holy martyrs Vincent and Lsetus. — At Piombino, in Tuscany, St. Regulus, martyr, who went thither from Africa, and consummated his martyrdom under Totila. — At Sens, St. Lupus, bishop and confessor, of whom it is related, that on a certain day, whilst he stood at the holy altar in presence of the clergy, a gem fell from heaven into the consecrated chalice which he was using. — At Capua, St. Priscus, bishop. He was one of those priests who were subjected to various trials for the Catholic faith during the persecution of the Vandals. Being put in an old ship on the coast of Africa, they reached the shores of Campania, and separating, they were placed at the head of various churches, and thus greatly extended the Christian religion. The companions of Priscus were Castrensis, Tammarus, Rosius, Heraclius, Secundinus, Adjutor, Mark, Augustus, Elpidius, Canion, and Vindonius. — At Aquino, St. Constantius, a bishop renowned for the gift of prophecy and many virtues. — At Le Mans, St. Victorius, bishop. — In Baden, in the diocese of Constance, St. Verena, virgin. HIGHLIGHTED SAINT St. Giles Abbot and confessor hidden with God. The Martyrology commemorates St. Giles in the province of Narbonne as abbot and confessor, placing his monastic witness at the threshold of September. His feast teaches the value of hidden fidelity. The Church needs not only public doctors and martyrs, but souls who keep the lamp of prayer burning in silence, abstinence, and stable service. Let St. Giles correct the hunger to be noticed. Much of the City is upheld by souls whose names are scarcely spoken, but whose fidelity is known to God. FROM MATINS The holy abbot who fled from glory among men. Matins - Proper Ninth Lesson - St. Giles, Abbot and Confessor Roman Breviary "As Giles became famous for working miracles, he fled from glory among men." - The proper lesson remembers St. Giles as a man of sacred learning and charity who gave his inheritance to the poor and fled from human glory. - His solitude joined abstinence to prayer, while his unwilling acceptance of monastic government shows authority received as duty rather than ambition. - The lesson keeps hidden prayer, works of mercy, and humble perseverance together as one path of abbatial holiness. Do not measure holiness by notice. St. Giles teaches the soul to give generously, flee vainglory, accept necessary responsibility, and let hidden prayer remain fruitful before God. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Ninth Lesson - St. Giles, Abbot The holy Abbat Giles was by birth an Athenian, and of Royal lineage. From his youth he showed ever such a love for sacred learning and for works of charity, that he seemed to care for nothing else. When his father and mother were dead, he bestowed his whole inheritance upon the poor. He took off even his own coat, to clothe a poor sick man withal, and the sick man was healed forthwith as soon as he put it on him. As Giles became famous for working miracles, he fled from glory among men, and betook him to Arles, [in France,] to the company of blessed Cæsarius. After the space of two years he departed thence, and went into the desert, for he lived in wonderful holiness for a long while upon the roots of herbs and the milk of an hind, which came to him at regular hours. This hind was chased one day by the King's hounds, and took refuge in Giles's cave. Thereby the King of France was moved earnestly to entreat of him that he would suffer a monastery to be built in the place where this cave was. At the instant desire of the King, he took the rule of this monastery, albeit himself unwilling, and discharged this duty wisely and godly for some years, until he passed away to heaven. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Grace Heals and Elevates Nature The Church places this truth before you today: Man is not saved by natural goodness, sentiment, or progress. He needs sanctifying grace, the merits of Christ, and persevering conversion. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church is holy because Christ is holy, because she possesses holy doctrine and sacraments, and because she forms saints by grace. The grace to be practiced is Hidden fidelity in prayer, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Imitate Mary's hidden life. Let fidelity be complete even when the work is ordinary and no human eye rewards it. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist naturalism, which treats human improvement as though it could take the place of supernatural life. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing hidden fidelity in prayer when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Receive obscurity and lack of recognition as a school of self-forgetfulness, not as permission for discouragement. Complete every duty faithfully, giving the least-noticed duty the same care under Our Lady's gaze, and leave its value entirely to God. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Thomas Aquinas. Your resolution before God: Pause at midday for a brief act of faith, hope, charity, and contrition. Carry this word: Prayer keeps the day from becoming self-ruled. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "If it be lawful and expedient to speak, speak then of God and of such things as are to the edifying of thy soul or of thy neighbour's." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 10, p. 18 Speech is a stewardship. Our Lady's recollection teaches the pilgrim that silence is not emptiness but a guard placed around charity and truth. Not every true observation must be spoken, and not every fault must be exposed by you. Before speaking, ask whether the words serve God's truth, a real duty, or the good of a soul. If they serve only irritation, curiosity, or the wish to appear discerning, let silence make the sacrifice. Today's Practice: Omit unnecessary remarks and use the silence to make holy aspirations. DAILY EXAMEN Thank God for the hidden graces of the day. Ask Our Lady to teach you to treasure what Heaven sees rather than what the world applauds. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, recollect my scattered thoughts, govern my words, and teach me to return to Thee before the noise of the day rules my soul. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. Matins - St. Giles - The traditional remembrance of St. Giles honors him as abbot and confessor, a saint whose greatness is guarded by monastic hiddenness rather than public display. - His witness teaches that prayer, stability, abstinence, and quiet fidelity can uphold the Church without drawing attention to themselves. Do not measure usefulness by visibility. Hidden prayer and faithful discipline may be doing more for souls than outward success can show. El testimonio de hoy se reúne bajo The hidden strength of an abbot.. Su primer punto es: The traditional remembrance of St. Giles honors him as abbot and confessor, a saint whose greatness is guarded by monastic hiddenness rather than public display. La instrucción práctica es: Do not measure usefulness by visibility. Hidden prayer and faithful discipline may be doing more for souls than outward success can show. VERDAD DE LA FE Grace Heals and Elevates Nature Man is not saved by natural goodness, sentiment, or progress. He needs sanctifying grace, the merits of Christ, and persevering conversion. Nota de la Iglesia: Holy Defensor: St. Thomas Aquinas Defensa católica: The Church is holy because Christ is holy, because she possesses holy doctrine and sacraments, and because she forms saints by grace. Error que resistir: Resist naturalism, which treats human improvement as though it could take the place of supernatural life. VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR Hidden fidelity in prayer. ORACIÓN O Lord, recollect my scattered thoughts, govern my words, and teach me to return to Thee before the noise of the day rules my soul. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
