CITY OF GOD IN EXILE
Feria in Time after Pentecost
2027-09-06 - Time after Pentecost - Feria - green
PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY
Feria: a weekday without a higher feast of its own; its prayers usually follow the current liturgical season.
Apostolic: belonging to the faith, mission, teaching, or authority handed down from Christ through the apostles.
Four marks of the Church: the identifying qualities named in the Creed: Christ's Church is one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic.
TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR
At Pentecost the Holy Ghost strengthened the apostles to preach Christ publicly and carry the Gospel to the nations. His work is not private excitement separated from doctrine, worship, and the authority Christ established. The faithful should ask Him for zeal that makes them more obedient to revealed truth, more constant in charity, and more courageous in Catholic witness. With Mary, enter Advent by choosing the hidden approval of God before the notice of the world. Ask Our Lady for a hidden beginning. Offer the whole day to God through her, including the parts that no one else will see or praise.

"Mary was singularly hidden during her life."
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 2

St. Louis de Montfort begins by placing Our Lady where the world does not know how to look. Her life is not built around display. The greatest creature God made is content to be known by Him, to receive His will without constructing an audience, and to let the mystery of Christ occupy the place that self-love continually seeks for itself.

A new formation in true devotion must therefore begin with hiddenness. Do not ask first how devotion will make you feel or how it will appear. Ask which faithful act can be performed today for God alone. Our Lady will teach you that a soul loses nothing by disappearing from human notice when Jesus Christ is being formed within it.

PRACTICE
Examine religious claims by asking whether they agree with the Catholic Church identified by her four marks, rather than judging by impression or preference.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"It is a great error of this age that all religions are alike."
Pope Leo XIII, Humanum Genus, n. 16

ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - September 6
The prophet Zachary, who returned in his old " age from Chaldea to his own country, and lies buried near the prophet Aggeus. — In Hellespont, St. Onesiphorus, disciple of the Apostles, of whom St. Paul speaks in his letter to Timothy. He was severely scourged with St. Porphyry, by order of the proconsul Adrian, and being dragged by wild horses, gave up his soul to God. — At Alexandria, the holy martyrs Faustus, priest, Macarius, and ten companions, who received the martyr's crown by being beheaded for the name of Christ, in the time of the emperor Decius and the governor Valerius. — In Cappadocia, the holy martyrs Cottidus, deacon, Eugenius, and their companions. — In Africa, in the persecution of the Vandals, the holy bishops Dona tian, Prsesidius, Mansuetus, Germanus, and Fusculus, who were most cruelly scourged and sent into exile, by order of the Arian king Hunneric, because they proclaimed the Catholic truth. Among them was one named Laetus, also a bishop, a courageous and most learned man, who was burned alive after a long imprisonment in a loathsome dungeon. — At Verona, St. Petronius, bishop and confessor. — At Rome, the holy abbot Eleutherius, a servant of God, who, according to the testimony of Pope St. Gregory, raised a dead man to life by his prayers and tears.

THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE
Hold the Traditions
The Church places this truth before you today: Apostolic tradition is not nostalgia. It is the handing down of what the Church received from Christ and the Apostles. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Tradition protects the faithful from the tyranny of the present moment and from teachers who mistake novelty for life.
The grace to be practiced is Faithful obedience to the grace of the present day, drawn from the daily rule of fidelity. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Imitate Mary's humility by allowing God, rather than human notice, to be the sufficient witness of a good act.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist innovation that claims continuity while contradicting what was handed down. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing faithful obedience to the grace of the present day when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Receive obscurity without treating it as rejection. Hidden fidelity is precious before God. Perform the least noticed duty with the same care you would give it under the eyes of the whole household.
The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Paul.
Your resolution before God: Examine religious claims by asking whether they agree with the Catholic Church identified by her four marks, rather than judging by impression or preference.
Carry this word: Christ's true Church is known by four identifying marks: she is one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic. These marks protect the pilgrim from counterfeit religion.
THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR
"It behoveth thee to break thine own will in many things, if thou wilt have peace and concord with others."
Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 17, p. 27
Concord bought by surrendering truth is false, but many quarrels arise from preference rather than principle. Yield what belongs to self-will while holding fast what belongs to God.

Learn to distinguish the two before the moment of conflict. Doctrine, purity, justice, and necessary duty may require firmness. Your preferred method, timing, recognition, or last word usually does not. The soul becomes strong when it stops spending zeal upon the defense of self.
Today's Practice: Yield harmless preferences cheerfully whenever truth and duty do not require firmness.
DAILY EXAMEN
Ask whether you sought to be seen, thanked, or vindicated. Place that hunger quietly into Mary's hands.
- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?
- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?
- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?
PRAYER
O Lord, keep my mind beneath the Church that is one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic. Do not let feeling, family custom, fear, or numbers replace Thy marks.
DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM
A brief rule to keep every day:
Begin with morning prayer
Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind.
Keep the Angelus
Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation.
Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament
Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Return to Jesus and Mary
Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation.
Pray the Rosary
Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain.
End with night prayer and examen
Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.

VERDAD DE LA FE
Hold the Traditions
Apostolic tradition is not nostalgia. It is the handing down of what the Church received from Christ and the Apostles.
Nota de la Iglesia: Apostolic
Defensor: St. Paul
Defensa católica: Tradition protects the faithful from the tyranny of the present moment and from teachers who mistake novelty for life.
Error que resistir: Resist innovation that claims continuity while contradicting what was handed down.
O Lord, keep my mind beneath the Church that is one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic. Do not let feeling, family custom, fear, or numbers replace Thy marks.
EXAMEN DIARIO
- ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy?
- ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar?
- ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
