CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Feria in Time after Pentecost 2027-09-13 - Time after Pentecost - Feria - green PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Feria: a weekday without a higher feast of its own; its prayers usually follow the current liturgical season. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR At Pentecost the Holy Ghost strengthened the apostles to preach Christ publicly and carry the Gospel to the nations. His work is not private excitement separated from doctrine, worship, and the authority Christ established. The faithful should ask Him for zeal that makes them more obedient to revealed truth, more constant in charity, and more courageous in Catholic witness. Receive the Catholic inheritance of love for Our Lady with gratitude and without embarrassment. Consecrate the place and persons entrusted to your duty to Jesus through Mary. "The whole earth is full of her glory, especially among Christians, by whom she is taken as the protectress of many kingdoms, provinces, dioceses and cities." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 9 The public honor once offered to Our Lady reminds the soul that religion is not meant to be hidden as a private preference. Christian peoples placed homes, cities, and kingdoms beneath her protection because they understood that Christ's reign concerns the whole order of life. You may not govern a kingdom, but some portion of the City has been entrusted to you: a room, a household duty, a conversation, a child, a suffering soul, or the custody of your own senses. Place that territory under Our Lady today, then remove from it whatever is unworthy of her Divine Son. PRACTICE Exercise and receive rightful authority today with humility, clarity, and obedience to God. QUOTE OF THE DAY "For I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand." St. Anselm of Canterbury, Proslogium, Chapter 1 NOVENA IN PROGRESS Novena to Our Lady of Sorrows - Day 8 of 9 Preparing for Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 2027-09-15. Ask to remain near Christ and His Church in suffering, without bitterness, panic, or compromise. Meditate on the Sorrows of Our Lady and pray for the grace to stand faithfully near every cross Providence permits. ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - September 13 At Alexandria, the birthday of blessed Philip, father of the virgin St. Eugenia. Resigning the dignity of prefect of Egypt, he obtained the grace of baptism. His successor, the prefect Terentius, caused him to be pierced through the throat with a sword, whilst he was praying. — Also, the holy martyrs Macrobius and Julian, who suffered under Licinius. — The same day, St. Ligorius, martyr, who living in the desert, was murdered by the Gentiles for the faith of Christ. — At Alexandria, St. Eulogius, a bishop, celebrated for learning and sanctity. — At Angers, in France, St. Mauritius, a bishop, renowned for numberless miracles. — At Sens, St. Amatus, bishop and confessor. — The same day, St. Venerius, confessor, a man of admirable sanctity, who led an eremitical life in the island of Palmaria. — In the monastery of Remiremont in France, St. Amatus, priest and abbot, illustrious for the virtue of abstinence and the gift of miracles. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Obedience Serves Truth The Church places this truth before you today: Catholic obedience is a virtue ordered to God and His truth. It is not servility before contradiction or unlawful command. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Authority is real because it comes from God, but it remains ministerial. It cannot command against the faith it exists to guard. The grace to be practiced is Faithful obedience to the grace of the present day, drawn from the daily rule of fidelity. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice stewardship under God: receive what is entrusted, guard it from corruption, and order it toward Christ. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist both rebellion against true authority and false obedience to commands that betray doctrine. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing faithful obedience to the grace of the present day when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the responsibility of protection without becoming controlling; authority remains a service beneath God. Restore order to the part of the home or daily work now before you, and offer the whole of your household duties to Jesus through Mary. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Thomas Aquinas. Your resolution before God: Exercise and receive rightful authority today with humility, clarity, and obedience to God. Carry this word: Authority is healed only when it submits to God. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Regard not much who is with thee, nor who is against thee, but be this thy greatest study, that God may be with thee." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book II, chapter 2, p. 55 Human approval is a poor compass. With Mary, seek first to be faithful to Jesus Christ and His Church, whether praise follows or not. The desire to be supported can subtly alter judgment before you notice it. It softens a necessary word, delays a duty, or makes loneliness appear to be proof that fidelity was mistaken. Examine the act by Catholic truth and your real obligations; then leave the company or opposition of men in God's hands. Today's Practice: Perform right acts without checking whether anyone noticed. DAILY EXAMEN Ask whether the portion entrusted to you was more peaceful, pure, truthful, and prayerful because of your presence. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, teach fathers, mothers, pastors, rulers, and children to receive authority as service beneath Thee, not as power against Thee. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. VERDAD DE LA FE Obedience Serves Truth Catholic obedience is a virtue ordered to God and His truth. It is not servility before contradiction or unlawful command. Nota de la Iglesia: Apostolic Defensor: St. Thomas Aquinas Defensa católica: Authority is real because it comes from God, but it remains ministerial. It cannot command against the faith it exists to guard. Error que resistir: Resist both rebellion against true authority and false obedience to commands that betray doctrine. ORACIÓN O Lord, teach fathers, mothers, pastors, rulers, and children to receive authority as service beneath Thee, not as power against Thee. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
