Cornelius, Pope, and Cyprian, Bishop, Martyrs 2027-09-16 - Time after Pentecost - Semi-Double - red PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Ecclesiastical or ecclesial: belonging or relating to the Church; the words refer to her life, law, worship, ministers, or common mission. Commemoration: a shorter liturgical remembrance of another saint or observance occurring on the same day. Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR In the Time after Pentecost, the Church sends the faithful back into daily labor under the light of the Holy Ghost. The soul must not seek fire as excitement only. It must seek the fire that purifies speech, strengthens duty, exposes false peace, and keeps the Church's received worship dear. Approach the Mother by contemplating the Divine Son whose glory explains every grace in her. Ponder the mysteries of the Rosary and ask Mary to teach you the mind and dispositions of Jesus within them. "If you wish to comprehend the Mother … comprehend the Son; for she is the worthy Mother of God." Her dignity comes from the mystery of Jesus Christ, true God and true man, whom she conceived, bore, nourished, and followed to the Cross. In its mysteries, look with Mary at Jesus. Notice what He does, what He suffers, what He commands, and what response He asks from you. For faith in our Lord she was subjected to tortures, imprisonment, blows, the torment of the wheel, fire, the crushing weight of stones, the teeth of beasts, scourging with rods, the cutting of sharp saws, burning pans, all of which she survived. But when she was again exposed to the beasts in the amphitheatre, praying to our Lord to receive her spirit, one of the animals having inflicted a bite on her sacred body, whilst the rest licked her feet, she yielded her unspotted soul to God. — At Rome, the holy martyrs Lucia, noble matron, and Geminian, who were subjected to most grievous afflictions and a long time tortured, by the command of the emperor Diocletian. Love unity in its Catholic form: communion in truth, lawful order, defense of souls, and willingness to suffer rather than purchase peace through surrender. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Fourth Lesson - Pope St. Cornelius in Exile Cornelius was a Roman who held the Popedom during the reign of the Emperors Gallus and Volusian. He, and that most holy Lady Lucina, took up the bodies of the Apostles Peter and Paul out of the Catacombs and put them in more convenient places. Lucina laid the body of Paul in a farm of her own upon the road to Ostia, hard by the place where he had received the sword-stroke. Cornelius placed that of the Prince of the Apostles hard by where he had been crucified. When this was told to the Emperors, and likewise that Cornelius was the means of making many Christians, he was banished to Civita Vecchia, where Cyprian, the holy Bishop of Carthage, comforted him by letters. Fifth Lesson - Refusal of False Worship They continued thus to write often one to the other, till the Emperors took in bad part these exchanges of Christian love, and sent for Cornelius to Rome. There they commanded him to be lashed with scourges loaded with lead as though he were a traitor, and then to be carried to offer sacrifice before the image of Mars. He firmly refused to commit this great wickedness, and was forthwith beheaded, upon the 14th day of September, [in the year of our Lord 252.] The blessed Lucina, with the help of the clergy, buried his body in the sand-pit on her own farm, near the Cemetery of Kallistus. He lived as Pope about two years. Sixth Lesson - St. Cyprian, Bishop and Martyr Cyprian was an African. He was first distinguished as a teacher of Rhetorick. He afterwards became a Christian at the persuasion of the Priest Cæcilius, whose surname he took, and parted all his goods among the poor. It was not long before he was chosen a Priest, and then made Bishop of Carthage. It would be idle to enlarge upon his wit, seeing that his works are as well known as the sun. He suffered under the Emperors Valerian and Gallienus, in the eighth persecution, and upon the same day, though not in the same year, that Cornelius testified at Rome. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Cross Is Daily The Church places this truth before you today: The disciple of Christ must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Our Lord in obedience, penance, and perseverance. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Holiness is formed in ordinary fidelity before it is tested in public suffering. The grace to be practiced is Pastoral fidelity unto martyrdom, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice faith by receiving the mystery as revealed truth before seeking consolation from it. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist a comfortable religion that admires Christ while refusing self-denial. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing pastoral fidelity unto martyrdom when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. When the mystery exceeds understanding, remain obedient to what God has revealed instead of making private judgment the measure of truth. Return once during work to the chosen mystery and unite the duty to an action of Our Lord within it. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Bede the Venerable. Your resolution before God: Practice every virtue the day requires, giving particular attention to the virtue most opposed by your habitual fault. Carry this word: Virtue grows by repeated acts under grace. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "I had liefer be poor with Thee, than rich without Thee." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book III, chapter 59, p. 173 Older English: “liefer” means “rather.” No created success compensates for separation from Christ. Prefer His friendship, His truth, and His Cross to every advantage gained by compromise. Temptation often presents the price first and hides the loss. It tells you what obedience may cost in comfort, reputation, companionship, or opportunity, while concealing the poverty of possessing these things without peace with God. Look beyond the immediate bargain and choose with eternity in view. Today's Practice: Refuse every compromise made for comfort, gain, or human respect. DAILY EXAMEN Ask whether today's devotion left you more attentive to Christ's word, sacrifice, and commandments. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, make doctrine fruitful in habit. Let truth become patience, courage, purity, recollection, penance, charity, and perseverance. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
