CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Dedication of St. Michael, Archangel 2027-09-29 - Time after Pentecost - Double of the First Class - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Feria: a weekday without a higher feast of its own; its prayers usually follow the current liturgical season. Archangel: an angel entrusted with a high mission in God's service; Scripture names Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR The Time after Pentecost is the long school of the Holy Ghost. The fire given at Pentecost must become doctrine believed, worship guarded, commandments kept, homes ordered, tongues governed, and charity practiced without novelty or disorder. Enter the sanctuary of this day with reverence for what God formed in His Mother. Ask Our Lady to teach you reverence before the mysteries of God and custody over whatever would profane them. "Mary is the excellent masterpiece of the Most High, the knowledge and possession of which He has reserved to Himself." GOSPEL OF THE DAY Their angels always see the face of my Father. Dedication of St. Michael, Archangel - Matthew 18:1-10 "See that you despise not one of these little ones." Ask St. Michael for courage, but also for littleness. The strongest souls are not those who never kneel, but those who know before Whom they kneel. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches Heaven is not indifferent to humility, innocence, or the protection of little souls. The angels serve the order of God, and St. Michael teaches the Church to resist proud rebellion. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Fourth Lesson - The Nine Orders of Angels We say that there are nine Orders of Angels, for, by the witness of the holy Word, we know that there be Angels, Archangels, Mights, Powers, Principalities, Dominions, Thrones, Cherubim, and Seraphim. Nearly every page of the holy Word witnesseth that there be Angels and Archangels. The books of the Prophets, as is well known, do oftentimes make mention of Cherubim and Seraphim. Paul, writing to the Ephesians, (i. 21,) counteth up the names of four Orders, where he saith: "[The Father of glory . . . raised (Christ) from the dead, and set Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places,] far above all Principality, and Power, and Might, and Dominion, [and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come.]" And the same, again, writing to the Colossians, (i. 16,) saith: "[By (the Son) were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible,] whether they be Thrones, or Dominions, or Principalities, or Powers; [all things were created by Him and for Him.]" If, then, we add the Thrones to the four Orders of which he spake unto the Ephesians, we have five Orders; and when we add unto them the Angels and the Archangels, the Cherubim and the Seraphim, we find that the Orders of Angels are beyond all doubt nine. Fifth Lesson - Angel Names Reveal Their Ministry But we must know that the word "Angel" is the designation, not of a nature, but of an office. Those holy spirits in the heavenly fatherland are alway spirits, but they may nowise be alway called Angels, [which is, being interpreted, "messengers,"] for they are Angels only when they are sent as Messengers. Hence also it is said by the Psalmist, (ciii. 5,) "Who makest spirits Thine Angels!" as if it were, "Of them who are alway with Him as spirits, He doth somewhiles make use as Messengers." They who go on the lesser messages are called Angels: they who go on the greater Archangels. Hence it is that unto the Virgin Mary was sent no common Angel, but the Archangel Gabriel. For the delivery of this, the highest message, it was meet that there should be sent the highest Angel. Their individual names also are so given as to signify the kind of ministry wherein each is powerful. "Michael" signifieth "Who-is-like-unto-God?" "Gabriel," "the Strength-of-God," and "Raphael," "the Medicine-of-God." Sixth Lesson - Michael and the Humility of Heavenly Strength As often as anything very mighty is to be done, we see that Michael is sent, that by that very thing, and by his name, we may remember that none is able to do as God doeth. Hence that old enemy whose pride hath puffed him up to be fain to be like unto God, even he who said, "I will ascend unto heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. . . . I will be like the Most High," (Isa. xiv. 13, 14,) this old enemy, when at the end of the world he is about to perish in the last death, having no strength but his own, is shown unto us a-fighting with Michael the Archangel, even as saith John, (Apoc. xii. 7): "There was war in heaven: Michael and his Angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels." Unto Mary is sent Gabriel, whose name is interpreted "the Strength of God," for he came to herald the appearing of Him Who was content to appear lowly that He might fight down the powers of the air. Raphael, also, as we have said, signifieth "the Medicine-of-God," and it is the name of him who touched as a physician the eyes of Tobias, and cleared away his blindness. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Revelation Was Entrusted to the Church The Church places this truth before you today: Sacred Scripture and Apostolic Tradition are received within the Church, whose divinely assisted teaching office guards the deposit of faith. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Private reading must remain subject to the faith once delivered, because the Scriptures belong to the Church that received, preserved, and interprets them. The grace to be practiced is Militant humility under God, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Reverence sees created holiness as God's work and returns admiration to His glory. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist private judgment when it sets itself above the Church's received doctrine. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing militant humility under God when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the discipline required to protect purity and recollection from the day's intrusions. Perform your sacred and ordinary duties without haste or carelessness, giving full attention to the duty now before you. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Irenaeus. Your resolution before God: Read the day's observance slowly, then ask what virtue it requires of you. Carry this word: The Church's memory teaches the soul how to live in time. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "It is good that we have sometime griefs and adversities, for they drive a man to behold himself, and to see that he is here but as in an exile, and be learned thereby to know that he ought not to put his trust in any worldly thing." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 12, p. 20 Adversity is not good because pain is pleasant or because every injustice should be left unopposed. It becomes profitable when Providence uses it to break an illusion: that earthly comfort is secure, that human approval can sustain the soul, or that personal strength is sufficient. When something unsettles you today, do not look only for the quickest escape. Ask what false support has been exposed. Then fulfill the duty the situation requires and place the shaken part of the heart more firmly in God, who alone cannot be taken from you. Today's Practice: When disappointments arrive, ask what earthly trusts they expose before seeking consolation. DAILY EXAMEN Ask where familiarity made you careless with prayer, holy things, or another soul made in God's image. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, keep the faithful in the Church's holy memory, and let this day's feast, feria, or witness draw my soul nearer to Thee. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
