CITY OF GOD IN EXILE St. Placid and Companions, Martyrs 2027-10-05 - Time after Pentecost - Simple - red PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Deposit of Faith: the complete body of revealed truth entrusted by Christ and the apostles to the Church to be guarded, taught, and handed on unchanged; the older word depositum means this sacred trust. Cloister: the enclosed part of a monastery or convent, and by extension the protected religious life of prayer lived there. Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. When martyrdom came, he was not asked to invent courage in a moment; he completed publicly the surrender already practiced in hidden life. Let today's small obedience become preparation for whatever Christ may later require. Ask Our Lady to form the likeness of her Son throughout His members and to make your whole life subject to Him. He was offered to God [by his father] when a child [only seven years of age,] and given over to holy Benedict, in whose teaching and Rule of monks he so profited that he was reckoned among the chiefest of his disciples. By him he was sent into Sicily, where he founded near the Port of Messina a Church and monastery in honour of St. John the Baptist, and lived therein with his monks in wonderful holiness. Thither there came to see him his brothers Eutychius and Victorinus and his virgin sister Flavia, and while they were together, there landed there a certain brutal pirate, named Manucha, who took the monastery, and when he could in no wise prevail upon Placidus and the others to deny Christ, he commanded him, his brothers, and his sister to be cruelly murdered. With them Donatus, Firmatus a Deacon, Faustus, and thirty other monks brought the conflict of testimony to the blessed end of martyrdom, upon the fifth day of October, in the year of salvation 509. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Faith Must Be Confessed Publicly The Church places this truth before you today: Catholic faith is not a private sentiment. It must be confessed, defended, and lived before men when duty requires it. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church is sent to all nations. Her public confession cannot be reduced to hidden feeling or private preference. The grace to be practiced is Monastic courage unto martyrdom, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice conformity to Christ across all virtues and duties, refusing to confine devotion to words, feelings, or isolated exercises. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist cowardly peace when silence would imply consent to error. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing monastic courage unto martyrdom when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the cutting and shaping by which self-love is removed and the image of the crucified Jesus becomes clearer. Let Our Lady form Christ's likeness in every prayer, decision, conversation, duty, sacrifice, and act of charity. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of catholic; the witness placed beside it is St. Athanasius. Your resolution before God: Obey God's commandments, fulfill your known duties, and receive just correction today as a direct answer to the temptation to say, 'I will not serve.' Do not let me answer Thy known will with the same refusal. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
