Denis, Rusticus, and Eleutherius, Martyrs 2027-10-09 - Time after Pentecost - Semi-Double - red PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith. Apostolic: belonging to the faith, mission, teaching, or authority handed down from Christ through the apostles. Bishop: a successor of the apostles charged with teaching, sanctifying, and governing a local Church. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Ss. Denis, Rusticus, and Eleutherius carried the confession of Christ through suffering to death. Martyrdom is not contempt for life; it is the judgment that eternal life and Catholic truth are worth more than bodily safety. Refuse every compromise today so that courage may grow before a greater trial comes. With Mary, listen for the command of Christ: Do whatever He shall say to you. Ask for Our Lady's recollection before the noise of the day begins. Let her lead the mind away from distraction and toward the will of her Son. "This devotion consists, then, in giving ourselves entirely to Our Lady, in order to belong entirely to Jesus through her." St. Louis de Montfort speaks of a gift of self. What is placed in Mary's hands must no longer be withheld whenever obedience becomes costly, prayer becomes dry, or duty asks to be preferred to inclination. Do not be frightened by the greatness of this surrender. Our Lady does not impoverish the soul that gives itself to her; she teaches it to cease wasting itself upon vanity and to belong more simply to Jesus. Denis was baptized by the apostle St. Paul, and consecrated first bishop of Athens. Then going to Rome, he was sent to Gaul by the blessed Roman Pontiff Clement, to preach the Gospel. He proceeded to Paris, and after having for some years faithfully filled the office entrusted to him, he was subjected to the severest kinds of torments by the prefect Fescenninus, and at length, being beheaded with his companions, completed his martyrdom. — The same day, the commemoration of the holy patriarch Abraham, father of all believers. — At Julia (now Borgo-San-Donnino), near Parma, on the Claudian road, St. Domninus, martyr, under the emperor Maximian. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Fourth Lesson - The Learned Judge Who Believed Denys was an Athenian, one of the Judges of the Court of the Areopagus, and a man of varied and deep learning. There is a story concerning him that on the day when the Lord Christ was nailed to the Cross, and when he saw the unnatural eclipse of the sun, Denys said: Either the God of nature is suffering, or the frame-work of the world is breaking up. When the Apostle Paul came to Athens, and was taken and brought unto the Areopagus, and gave an account of the faith which he preached, affirming that Christ had risen from the dead, and that all the dead likewise are to live again, "some mocked, and others said: We will hear thee again of this matter. So Paul departed from among them. Howbeit, certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite." (Acts xvii. 32-34.) Fifth Lesson - The Gospel Preached Through Torment Denys was baptized by the Apostle, and set over the Church of the Athenians. He came afterwards to Rome, and was sent by Pope Clement into Gaul, to preach the Gospel. There followed him to Paris one Rusticus a Priest, and Eleutherius a Deacon. He turned many to Christ, and was therefore hided with rods by command of Fescennius the Praefect, and, forasmuch as he still went on bravely preaching Christ, he was tortured with fire upon a grating, and put to divers other torments, and his comrades likewise. Sixth Lesson - Their Testimony Finished Together They bore their torments bravely and cheerfully, and then Denys, being over an hundred years of age, and his two comrades with him, suffered by the axe upon the 9th day of October. This is that Denys concerning whom the old story is told that after his head was cut off he took it in his hands and walked two thousand paces, carrying it all the while. He was the author of some marvellous books, clear proofs of a mind fixed in heaven, upon "The Names of God," upon "The Orders in Heaven and in the Church," upon "The Mystic Theology," and divers others. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Truth and Charity Cannot Be Divided The Church places this truth before you today: Charity loves the real good of the soul, and therefore cannot ask truth to be hidden, softened into falsehood, or traded for comfort. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The saints defended truth sharply when souls were endangered, yet their severity was ordered to salvation, not pride. The grace to be practiced is Hierarchical missionary courage, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Imitate Mary's obedience. Catholic obedience hears God first, receives the truth whole, and refuses every command that would require sin or betrayal of the Faith. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist the counterfeit charity that calls correction unkind while leaving souls in danger. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing hierarchical missionary courage when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. When the duty is difficult, make Mary's fiat your own: accept God's will without bargaining, while using every lawful means duty requires. Begin this act with the aspiration, 'Jesus, living in Mary, live and reign in me.' Then perform it faithfully. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Bernard of Clairvaux. Your resolution before God: Refuse every compromise with comfort when duty, prayer, or truth asks for fidelity. Carry this word: The City of God and the city of man do not seek the same end. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Regard not much who is with thee, nor who is against thee, but be this thy greatest study, that God may be with thee." With Mary, seek first to be faithful to Jesus Christ and His Church, whether praise follows or not. The desire to be supported can subtly alter judgment before you notice it. It softens a necessary word, delays a duty, or makes loneliness appear to be proof that fidelity was mistaken. Examine the act by Catholic truth and your real obligations; then leave the company or opposition of men in God's hands. Today's Practice: Perform right acts without checking whether anyone noticed. DAILY EXAMEN Examine whether you obeyed Christ promptly or delayed through self-will. Entrust repentance and amendment to Our Lady. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, detach my heart from the city of comfort, applause, and self-rule. Order me toward Thy City, where truth, sacrifice, grace, and holiness reign. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
