CITY OF GOD IN EXILE 6th Sunday after the Epiphany 2027-11-14 - Time after Pentecost - Semi-Double Sunday - green PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY 6th Sunday after the Epiphany is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves St. Josaphat, Bishop and Martyr on this date. The Gospel, Breviary witness and Breviary sermon or lesson panels below come from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Epiphany: the feast of Christ being revealed to the nations, represented especially by the Magi who came to adore Him. Ecclesiastical or ecclesial: belonging or relating to the Church; the words refer to her life, law, worship, ministers, or common mission. Commemoration: a shorter liturgical remembrance of another saint or observance occurring on the same day. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. He did not seek peace by treating contradictory doctrines as equal expressions of faith. True unity is unity in the Catholic Faith, sought with prayer, charity, patience, and willingness to suffer. Ask Our Lady to form the likeness of her Son throughout His members and to make your whole life subject to Him. Offer your whole person to Jesus through Mary and ask that His mind, virtues, commandments, and Cross govern you today. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Fourth Lesson - The Wound of Love and the Discipline of Religion Josaphat Kuncewicz was born at Vladimir in Volhynia of noble and Catholic parents. As a child, while hearing his mother speak of the Passion of Christ, he received in his heart a wound as though a dart had come forth from the side of an image of Jesus crucified. Inflamed with the love of God, he began to devote himself to prayer and pious works so earnestly that he became an example and an object of admiration to older youths. As a young man he professed the monastic rule among the cloistered followers of St. Basil at Vilna and made wonderful progress in evangelical perfection. He went barefoot even during the severe cold of that region, never ate meat, took wine only from obedience, and afflicted his body with a rough hairshirt until death. He preserved unstained the flower of chastity which he had vowed to the Virgin Mother of God in youth. The fame of his virtue and teaching soon became so widespread that he was appointed superior of the monastery at Byten while still young, then archimandrite of Vilna, and finally, though unwilling, Archbishop of Polotsk. Fifth Lesson - Catholic Unity, Papal Authority, and Mercy Raised to that dignity, he relaxed nothing of his former manner of life and had nothing at heart except divine worship and the salvation of the sheep entrusted to him. A most zealous promoter of Catholic unity and truth, he labored with all his strength to bring schismatics and heretics back to communion with the See of St. Peter. By sermons and writings full of piety and doctrine he never ceased to defend the Supreme Pontiff and the plenitude of his power against the shameless calumnies and errors of the impious. He vindicated ecclesiastical goods seized by laymen. It is incredible how many heretics he recalled to the bosom of Mother Church. Pontifical declarations clearly attest that Josaphat was a most excellent promoter of the union of the Greek Church with the Latin. He restored the beauty of divine worship, built churches and houses for consecrated virgins, assisted other pious works, and voluntarily devoted the revenues of his see to them. He was so generous toward the poor that, when nothing else was at hand to relieve the need of a widow, he ordered his episcopal pallium to be pledged. Sixth Lesson - The Martyr of Unity The great progress of the Catholic Faith stirred such hatred in wicked men that by conspiracy they determined to seek Christ's athlete for death. He himself foretold in a sermon to the people what threatened him. During a pastoral visitation at Vitebsk, the murderers invaded the archiepiscopal residence and attacked those they met. The most gentle man went freely to meet them and addressed them kindly: 'Children, why do you strike my household? If you have anything against me, behold, I am here.' They rushed upon him, wounded him with weapons and arrows, struck him savagely with an axe, and cast him into the river on November 12, 1623, in the forty-third year of his age. His body, surrounded by a wonderful light, was taken from the water. The martyr's blood first benefited his very murderers, for all who had been condemned to death rejected schism and repented of their crime. Pope Urban VIII numbered him among the Blessed. On June 29, 1867, during the solemn centenary celebration of the Princes of the Apostles, Pope Pius IX canonized him in the Vatican Basilica before the College of Cardinals and nearly five hundred patriarchs, metropolitans, and bishops of every rite gathered from the whole world, solemnly enrolling this defender of ecclesiastical unity, the first from among the Eastern Christians, in the order of the Saints. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Sacrifice of the Mass Is the Heart of Catholic Worship The Church places this truth before you today: Catholic worship is centered on the true Sacrifice of the altar, offered by the priest in union with Christ the eternal High Priest. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The same sacrificial worship belongs to the Church throughout the world; it is not a local invention or a merely human assembly rite. The grace to be practiced is Zeal for Catholic unity, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice conformity to Christ across all virtues and duties, refusing to confine devotion to words, feelings, or isolated exercises. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist every reduction of the Mass to a memorial meal, community symbol, or religious performance. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing zeal for Catholic unity when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the cutting and shaping by which self-love is removed and the image of the crucified Jesus becomes clearer. Let Our Lady form Christ's likeness in every prayer, decision, conversation, duty, sacrifice, and act of charity. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of catholic; the witness placed beside it is Council of Trent. Your resolution before God: Pray for the conversion and return of those separated from the Church, naming neither their errors nor their souls with contempt. DAILY EXAMEN Compare the day's conduct with Jesus Christ rather than with your preferences, and repent wherever His likeness was obscured. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, through St. Josaphat, bring separated souls into the unity of Thy Catholic Church and preserve me from false ecumenism. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. Rezar el Rosario Mantenga ante la mente los misterios de Cristo con Nuestra Señora. Volver a Dios con jaculatorias Use una breve aspiración santa durante el trabajo, la espera, el sufrimiento o la tentación. Terminar con oración nocturna y examen Dé gracias, confiese las faltas, perdone las ofensas y haga un propósito concreto.
