Bishop: a successor of the apostles charged with teaching, sanctifying, and governing a local Church. Divine Providence: God's wise and loving governance of creation, by which He directs all things without destroying human freedom. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR St. Gregory Thaumaturgus united exact doctrine, episcopal labor, prayer, and miracles that served conversion. Wonders are never the measure of Catholic truth; rather, every authentic gift must remain subject to the Faith received by the Church. Ask for the greater miracle of a will moved from sin to obedience. Ask the Holy Ghost to strike deep within you the roots of every virtue He formed so perfectly in His faithful Spouse. Ask the Holy Ghost through Our Lady for the increase of every theological, moral, and necessary particular virtue. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Fourth Lesson - The Bishop Called the Wonder-worker Gregory, Archbishop of Neo-Caesarea, in Pontus, is famous indeed for his holiness and doctrine, but much more so on account of the signs and wonders which he wrought, the number and character of which were so extraordinary that they have gotten him the name of "Thaumatourgos," which is, being interpreted from the Greek, "the Wonder-worker." Holy Basil compareth him with Moses, with the Prophets, and with the Apostles, and testifieth that by his prayers he moved a mountain that stood in the way of the building of a Church. Moreover, he dried up a marsh, which was a cause of strife between brothers. Also, when the River Lycus overflowed and wasted the fields, he set his walking-stick on the bank, which stick forthwith grew into a green tree, and confined the stream within its bed, so that it never more passed that place again. Fifth Lesson - A City Converted to Christ He oftentimes cast out devils either from heathen idols or from the bodies of men, and did many other marvellous things, whereby he drew countless numbers to believe in Jesus Christ. Also he had the spirit of prophecy, and foretold things to come. When he was at the point of death, he asked how many unbelievers were left in the city of Neo-Caesarea? and when they answered "Seventeen," he gave God thanks, and said: "Just so many were the faithful when I took the Bishoprick." He wrote a great deal, whereby, as well as by his wonders, he hath enlightened the Church of God. Sixth Lesson - From the Common of a Bishop and Confessor It is very meet and right that upon this day, which is made a joyful day for us because it is the day whereon our blessed Father Gregory passed away to heaven, I say it is very meet and right that on this day we should sing that verse of the Psalms: "The righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance." His memory is rightly honoured among men who is at this present making glad among Angels. The word of God saith: "Judge none blessed before his death," as though it were said, "Judge him blessed when life is ended, praise him when he is made perfect." For there are two main reasons why it is better to praise a dead man than a living, since, if thou call him holy and worthy after his death, thou dost it when neither canst thou be corrupted by being a flatterer, nor he by being flattered. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Hold the Traditions The Church places this truth before you today: Apostolic tradition is not nostalgia. It is the handing down of what the Church received from Christ and the Apostles. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Tradition protects the faithful from the tyranny of the present moment and from teachers who mistake novelty for life. The grace to be practiced is Learned faith alive with trust, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice the whole order of virtue throughout the day, giving special vigilance to the defects that most frequently oppose grace. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist innovation that claims continuity while contradicting what was handed down. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing learned faith alive with trust when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept sustained discipline, hidden repetition, and slow growth without replacing real virtue with passing fervor or token sacrifice. Fulfill all prayers, duties, penances, acts of charity, and occasions of witness with faith, hope, charity, prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Paul. Your resolution before God: Renew faith whenever circumstances tempt you to distrust God's Providence. Carry this word: The holiest wonder is grace making an unbelieving or stubborn soul obedient. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Trust not in thine own cunning, neither in the cunning or policy of any creature living, but rather in the grace of God, which helpeth meek persons." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 7, p. 16 Natural ability cannot sanctify a soul. Work diligently, but place confidence in grace and entrust the outcome into Our Lady's hands for her Divine Son. Self-reliance often disguises itself as responsibility. The difference appears when plans fail: responsibility continues the duty peacefully, while self-reliance becomes anxious, harsh, or defeated because it secretly believed everything depended upon itself. Ask for help before beginning, and surrender the fruit when you have done what you can. Today's Practice: Begin a difficult duty with a Hail Mary and finish it without self-congratulation. DAILY EXAMEN Examine the roots and fruits of the day, thanking God for growth and naming every vice that must be confessed, uprooted, and opposed tomorrow. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, through St. Gregory Thaumaturgus, preserve my faith from credulity and my reason from unbelief; convert what remains hardened within me. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
