Redemption: Christ's saving work by which He paid the price of sin through His obedient suffering and death and frees sinners for life with God. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR St. Felix of Valois helped found a religious family for the ransom of Christians held in captivity. His charity was organized, sacrificial, and directed toward souls endangered by oppression and apostasy. Pray for those trapped by persecution, vice, false religion, or fear, and ask what lawful sacrifice you can make for their deliverance. As a faithful servant of Mary, make room for the reign of Jesus Christ in the smallest duties. Renew your gift of self to Jesus through Mary. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Fourth Lesson - Royal Prospects Exchanged for Mercy Felix, formerly called Hugh, was born in Gaul of the royal family of Valois. From his earliest years he gave no slight indications of his future holiness, especially by mercy toward the poor. While still an infant he distributed money to the needy with his own hand, as though he were older and possessed mature judgment. When somewhat grown, he frequently sent them food taken from the table and often stripped himself of his own clothing to cover the destitute. He obtained from his uncle Theobald, Count of Champagne and Blois, the life of a man condemned to death; and when the murderer was immediately surrounded by a most violent fire yet escaped it unharmed, the event gave clear divine testimony. Fifth Lesson - Sacred Orders, Solitude, and St. John of Matha After passing his youth in a praiseworthy manner, he began, through love of heavenly contemplation, to think of solitude. He first chose, however, to be initiated into sacred orders, so that he might cut off every hope of the kingdom, from whose succession by Salic law he was not far removed. Having been ordained priest and celebrated his first Mass with the greatest devotion, he withdrew not long afterwards into a wilderness. There, living in extreme abstinence and abounding in heavenly gifts, he spent several years with St. John of Matha, Doctor of Paris, who had sought and found him by divine inspiration. At length both, admonished by an angel from God, went to Rome to seek a special rule of life from the Supreme Pontiff. Sixth Lesson - The Order of the Most Holy Trinity Having received from Pope Innocent III confirmation of their own rule, they first built, in the Diocese of Meaux at the place called Cerfroid, a monastery of the order which Felix and his companion had established shortly before. There he wonderfully cultivated religious observance and the work of redemption and diligently propagated them through his disciples into other provinces. He received an illustrious favor from the Blessed Virgin Mother: during the watches of the night before the feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God, when the brethren had not yet arisen for Matins, Felix entered the choir before the appointed hour and found the Blessed Virgin in the midst of the choir, clothed in the habit marked with the cross of the order and accompanied by heavenly spirits similarly clothed. Felix led the divine praises with the Mother of God presiding and completed the office according to custom. As though called already from the earthly to the heavenly choir and made more certain by an angel of his approaching death, he exhorted his sons to charity toward the poor and captives and gave his soul back to God, full of years and merits, in 1212 under Pope Innocent III. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Mary Is Mother of God and Mother of the Faithful The Church places this truth before you today: The Blessed Virgin Mary is truly Mother of God, and her maternal office belongs to the order of Christ's Incarnation, Passion, and grace. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Marian doctrine protects the truth about Christ: one divine Person, truly God and truly man, born of the Virgin Mother. The grace to be practiced is Mercy ordered to ransom, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Imitate Mary's hidden life. Let fidelity be complete even when the work is ordinary and no human eye rewards it. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist every thin devotion that praises Mary while separating her from doctrine, sacrifice, and the life of grace. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing mercy ordered to ransom when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Receive obscurity and lack of recognition as a school of self-forgetfulness, not as permission for discouragement. Complete every duty faithfully, giving the least-noticed duty the same care under Our Lady's gaze, and leave its value entirely to God. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Cyril of Alexandria. Your resolution before God: Offer your sacrifices and pray the Rosary with the goal of completing all three traditional sets of mysteries for souls held captive by grave sin or false religion. Carry this word: Mercy goes in search of souls whose freedom has been taken or surrendered. Then fulfill the duty the situation requires and place the shaken part of the heart more firmly in God, who alone cannot be taken from you. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
