CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Sunday within the Octave of the Nativity (transferred) 2027-12-30 - Christmastide - Semi-Double Sunday - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Sunday within the Octave of the Nativity (transferred) is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves Day within the Octave of the Nativity on this date. The Gospel, Breviary witness and Breviary sermon or lesson panels below come from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Octave: an eight-day extension of a major feast, allowing the Church to continue praying over the same mystery. Incarnation: the mystery that the eternal Son of God truly took a human nature and became man without ceasing to be God. Veneration and adoration: veneration is religious honor given to saints and holy things because of their relation to God; adoration is worship that belongs to God alone. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Within the Nativity octave, holy Simeon foretells that the Child will be a sign contradicted and that a sword will pierce His Mother's soul. Bethlehem already divides belief from unbelief and points Mary toward Calvary. Stand with her in quiet fidelity when following Christ brings contradiction rather than applause. Receive Jesus anew as the blessed Fruit of Mary's womb and ask that He be formed fully in your heart. Greet Our Lady with the Angelic Salutation and ask her to give you Jesus more fully in faith, grace, obedience, and love. "If any one of the faithful has Jesus Christ formed in his heart, he can say boldly, All thanks be to Mary! what I possess is her effect and her fruit, and without her I should never have had it." It teaches that Christmas is not a moment of warmth to be consumed and forgotten, but the mystery of the Word made flesh to be adored, pondered, and obeyed. Stay close to Bethlehem after the feast. The Child remains, and the soul needs repeated adoration to become simple again. FROM MATINS Christmas dignity must govern the ordinary days after the feast. It would be unlawful to be sad to-day, for to-day is Life's Birthday: the Birthday of that Life, Which, for us dying creatures, taketh away the sting of death, and bringeth the bright promise of the eternal gladness hereafter. It would be unlawful for any man to refuse to partake in our rejoicing. All men have an equal share in the great cause of our joy, for, since our Lord, Who is the destroyer of sin and of death, findeth that all are bound under the condemnation, He is come to make all free. Rejoice, O thou that art holy, thou drawest nearer to thy crown! Rejoice, O thou that art sinful, thy Saviour offereth thee pardon! Rejoice also, O thou Gentile, God calleth thee to life! Fifth Lesson - The Almighty Fights in Our Weak Flesh When our Lord entered the field of battle against the devil, He did so with a great and wonderful fairness. Being Himself the Almighty, He laid aside His uncreated Majesty to fight with our cruel enemy in our weak flesh. He brought against him the very shape, the very nature of our mortality, "yet without sin." (Heb. iv. 15.) His birth however was not a birth like other births - for no other is born pure, nay, not the little child whose life endureth but a day on the earth. To His birth alone the throes of human passion had not contributed, in His alone no consequence of sin had had part. For His Mother was chosen a Virgin of the kingly lineage of David, and when she was to grow heavy with the sacred Child, her soul had already conceived Him before her body. She knew the counsel of God announced to her by the Angel, lest the unwonted events should alarm her. The future Mother of God knew what was to be wrought in her by the Holy Ghost, and that her modesty was absolutely safe. Sixth Lesson - Christian Dignity Carried beyond the Feast Therefore, dearly beloved brethren, let us give thanks to God the Father, through His Son, in the Holy Ghost: Who, "for His great love wherewith He loved us," hath had mercy on us: and, "even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ," (Eph. ii. 4, 5,) that in Him we might be a new creature, and a new workmanship. Let us then put off the old man with his deeds (Col. iii. 9); and, having obtained a share in the Sonship of Christ, let us renounce the deeds of the flesh. Learn, O Christian, how great thou art, who hast been made partaker of the Divine nature, (2 Pet. i. 4,) and fall not again by corrupt conversation into the beggarly elements above which thou art lifted. Remember Whose Body it is Whereof thou art made a member, and Who is its Head, (1 Cor. vi. 15.) Remember that it is He That hath delivered thee from the power of darkness and hath translated thee into God's light, and God's kingdom, (Col. i. 13.) THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Grace Heals and Elevates Nature The Church places this truth before you today: Man is not saved by natural goodness, sentiment, or progress. He needs sanctifying grace, the merits of Christ, and persevering conversion. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church is holy because Christ is holy, because she possesses holy doctrine and sacraments, and because she forms saints by grace. The grace to be practiced is Persevering adoration of the Incarnate Word, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice grateful recollection by carrying the name, mysteries, teaching, and example of Jesus throughout the entire day. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist naturalism, which treats human improvement as though it could take the place of supernatural life. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing persevering adoration of the Incarnate Word when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Unite every suffering to a mystery of the Rosary and accept it as part of Mary's labor that Christ be formed in you. Pray the Rosary with the goal of saying all three traditional groups of mysteries, offering it for an intention and for souls who have no one to pray for them. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Thomas Aquinas. Your resolution before God: Accept contradictions without complaint and offer them through Our Lady for souls resisting Christ. Carry this word: The peace of Christ is fidelity beneath contradiction, not freedom from the Cross. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Thou alone art the true refection of the soul, and he that worthily eateth Thee shall be partaker and heir of eternal glory." Let every Marian offering lead you more faithfully to her Eucharistic Son. If you can assist at Mass and receive worthily, approach with recollection and hunger rather than habit. If you cannot, do not allow absence to become forgetfulness. Turn toward the tabernacle, confess your desire, and ask Our Lady to prepare in you a more faithful welcome for Jesus. Today's Practice: Make a reverent Spiritual Communion, or prepare carefully for Holy Communion if you will receive today. DAILY EXAMEN Thank Our Lady for every trace of her Son formed in you and ask pardon where sin or negligence drove His likeness from your conduct. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Jesus, sign of contradiction, keep me faithful beneath Thy Cross; O sorrowful Mother, teach me to stand with thee and not flee. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
