CITY OF GOD IN EXILE St. Benedict, Abbot 2028-03-21 - Lent - Greater Double - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Eucharist: the sacrament in which, after the consecration at Mass, Jesus Christ is truly present—Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity—under the appearances of bread and wine. Abbot: the spiritual father and superior of a monastery. Penance: repentance expressed through prayer, self-denial, reparation, and a real turning away from sin. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Humiliation, opposition, and penance do not mean that God has ceased to govern. Our Lord redeemed the world through His obedient suffering on the Cross. When Catholics accept unavoidable trials without sin, perform penance, and continue obeying the truth, those sufferings can humble pride and deepen fidelity rather than lead to despair. Ask Our Lady to take root in the whole soul, so that devotion may mature into purity, fruitfulness, and persevering holiness. Consecrate the whole soil of the soul to Jesus through Mary and ask that no attachment resist the roots of her virtues. "When Mary has struck her roots in a soul, she produces there marvels of grace, which she alone can produce, because she alone is the fruitful Virgin, who never has had, and never will have, her equal in purity and in fruitfulness." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 35 St. Louis de Montfort immediately joins these marvels to Mary's union with the Holy Ghost and to the formation of great Saints. He does not promise spiritual novelty, curiosity about the latter times, or greatness in the eyes of the world. The marvel is a creature made holy by grace, conformed to Jesus Christ, and prepared to defend His cause. A root must possess the soil before it can bear fruit. Give Our Lady no decorative corner of life while passions, habits, opinions, possessions, and plans remain under self-will. Let her purity expose compromise, her faith reject error, her humility dethrone pride, and her fruitfulness multiply prayer, sacrifice, duty, and works of mercy for souls. St. Benedict teaches ordered holiness: flee corruption, discipline disordered bodily desires, reject idols, build a Christian rule of life, and prepare to die with hope after receiving Christ in the Holy Eucharist. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Hold the Traditions The Church places this truth before you today: Apostolic tradition is not nostalgia. It is the handing down of what the Church received from Christ and the Apostles. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Tradition protects the faithful from the tyranny of the present moment and from teachers who mistake novelty for life. The grace to be practiced is Ordered perseverance under rule, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice fruitful purity by rejecting sin and filling the day with faithful prayer, duty, reparation, charity, and Catholic witness. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist innovation that claims continuity while contradicting what was handed down. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing ordered perseverance under rule when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the hidden breaking of hard soil: correction, denied preference, patient labor, and the uprooting of habits opposed to holiness. Carry every duty to its proper completion and offer its fruits through Our Lady for the glory of Jesus Christ and the salvation of souls. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Paul. Your resolution before God: Give thanks for the Precious Blood and guard every known occasion where grace could be wasted. Carry this word: The Precious Blood teaches the price of grace. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Words feed not the soul; but a good life refresheth the mind, and a clean conscience bringeth a man to a firm and stable trust in God." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 2, p. 10 Pious speech cannot replace obedience. Peace grows where known duty is fulfilled and forgiven sin is honestly confessed. The soul sometimes speaks about prayer, holiness, or the crisis in the Church because speaking is easier than amendment. Do not despise true words, but require them first of yourself. Let the repair of neglected duties become proof that truth has entered the will. Today's Practice: Begin completing the neglected duties you have discussed more than performed, ordering them justly and without further excuse. DAILY EXAMEN Examine whether Marian devotion entered the roots of your choices or remained an exterior ornament without command over conduct. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord Jesus Christ, by Thy Precious Blood cleanse my conscience, strengthen my will, and teach me never to treat grace as cheap. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
